FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Christian Hackenberg might get a uniform on Saturday.

After 14 games on the inactive list, the New York Jets' rookie quarterback might dress against the New England.

"It's possible," coach Todd Bowles said Thursday.

The decision will be based on injuries. In other words, if Bowles can't find 46 healthy players at other positions, he'll activate Hackenberg at the No. 3 quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the No. 2. Bryce Petty will make his fourth career start.

Bowles gave the expected response when asked how he'd feel if Hackenberg were pressed into action, saying the former Penn State passer wouldn't be active if they didn't think he could execute the game plan. Then, in a moment of rare candor, Bowles said:

"If we get down to the third quarterback, we're probably getting killed in the first place."

The Jets (4-10) are a 16.5-point underdog, which means Vegas expects them to get killed no matter who they put at quarterback.

In injury news, running back Matt Forte missed practice for the second straight day and will be a game-time decision. Forte, 31, is dealing with a nerve issue in his shoulder and a torn meniscus in his knee. He has been playing all season with the knee problem and he hurt his shoulder while blocking a blitzer last week against Miami.

Some might be wondering, why not just sit Forte in these meaningless games?

"If he can play, he will," said Bowles, who trusts him enough to make the call.

Either way, Bilal Powell will get most of the carries again.

Kid should be in uniform anyway... no point in dressing fitz anymore. Let him get more practice reps, even if he doesn't see the field. Get him off the scout team. Though I would say if the jets were any good that he would be a good Brady decoy considering he ran the pats offense at penn state

Would be nice to see him play. See where he's at and what he may be next year. Jets are going to lose both games anyway, so why not. If Hack has caught up to half way speed then it should be a interesting off season, training camp and pre season with him and Petty. Healthy competition never hurt anyone and the Jets sure nuf can use some.
