Mathematically speaking that 14 million puts them at 24 in available cap space. Cap space is not judged in a vacuum, the amount of money available is only weighted by what other teams have available to compete for FA's with. The projected rise in cap to $150,000,000 it is really a moot point, as all teams will receive the same raise in cap, which will be applied to bids for FA's causing the FA price to rise.

Applying previous contracts to what a contract might look like with the cap hikes is clearly not going to work.

Saying that the Jets could clear an additional $36,000,000 is a bit disingenuous. Even if they out right cut the following players, (which just isn't going to happen) D'Brick--9,093,000 Mangold----8,600,000 Cro---8,000,000 Giagomini----3,875,000. The total only comes to 29,568,000. That is with out giving any thought to what it might cost to replace them.

Also you have neglected to incorporate what it would cost to sign some of our own FA's... Wilkerson... Word seems to be he will be franchised. $14.78 million for a DE. Fitzpatrick...he's going to make some money this year, he's earned it. Snacks, Probably one of the best NT's in the NFL..Certainly won't be cheap. Ivory....Powell.. Davis..As much disfavor as he has fallen into with Jets' fans think they want him back. One of the fastest LB'er on the team, and excellent against the run. Antonio Allen...jarrett..Douzable..Walls..Erin Henderson..Quigley..Thompkins.. And of course your friend that some how you can say with certainty the Jets are high on. (I'm not as sure) Ben Ijalana.

Not all these guys will be paid big money, but either they, or their replacements , are not counted in the cap space you ar talking about for next year.

Personally I would rather sign some of our own home grown guys that we know how they play, then go chasing over priced FA's who could easily go bust as we have seen many times before.

Point is, when considering the total structure of the Jets roster, if they want to keep this team semi intact, they are up against the cap.

Suspect Macc , if he's smart, and I think he is, will be very frugal in FA this year.

Again the point is the cap as is -- is workable with straight out release of certain players, restructuring of certain players never made the sentiment of who they may retain into my factor was simply stating that the $14 M is what the cap space is now until they make the primary moves to make cap room and what they possibly can... Rollover affect and current flexibility was not what I was stating and I am not arguing over this fact, but the Jets are NOT hurting to make room with the ability to creative correct certain contracts with the players whom are willing to work with the team to open up the cash flow to keep talent as also to sign new talent to the roster...

Like you said, removing those contracts opens up some but in years past players like Brick and others have restructured their contracts into a prorated bonus or signing bonus to allocate cap space to either re-sign other players or sign free agents in the upcoming year...

And no I did NOT neglect to add in anything about retaining players, because I can not tell the future of WHAT MAY BE? Just stating WHAT CAN BE! The word by Jets beat reporters is that the team will franchise him -- ahem IF they can not come to an agreement which the terms of the contract prior to the season start from good sources that the only thing hanging up the deal getting done was guaranteed dollars and incentives... I am not going to speculate on our free agents who may price themselves out of New York...

In all honesty all this talk about who may stay or who may go, or what they should/could be paid, will be a much better topic for Febuary after the Jets win the Super Bowl.

Right now the Jets are very much alive in this season, and lots to talk about. The very complicated aspects of cap management will be fun after the season when actual football news becomes very scarce.

For right now I'm going to leave that up to Macc and Jackie to figure out.
