Breshad Perriman, Denzel Mims bring speed to Jets receiving group

The Jets entered this offseason with two main goals — find protectors and playmakers for Sam Darnold.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas addressed wide receiver in both free agency and the draft, hoping to give his third-year quarterback improved targets in 2020. The biggest additions are Breshad Perriman and rookie Denzel Mims. The biggest subtraction is Robby Anderson, who left in free agency for the Panthers.

Perriman and Mims are both speedsters who arrive with questions about their route running and ability to be a complete receiver. Those are basically the same questions that people had about Anderson during his four years with the Jets.

It was a bit of a surprise the Jets let Anderson walk after he showed chemistry with Darnold late last season, when he finished with 52 catches for 779 yards and five touchdowns. The Panthers gave him a two-year, $20 million deal with $12 million in Year 1. That is not an unreasonable contract, but the Jets let him leave.

Just hours after Anderson agreed to a deal with Carolina, the Jets jumped on Perriman. A 2015 first-round pick of the Ravens, Perriman has been a disappointment for most of his career. But he came on strong at the end of last season for the Buccaneers and the Jets are hoping that was him starting to realize his potential. He had 25 catches for 506 yards and five touchdowns in Tampa’s final five games.

“I’m excited to see what he can do in this offense,” Jets coach Adam Gase said. “His skill set fits in well with what we do. We feel like he can do multiple things for us. He can create explosive plays. He can do some good stuff after the catch.”

Darnold will have plenty of speed on the field with Perriman and Mims, whom the Jets took in the second round out of Baylor. He ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash and showed in college that he can make tough catches. The big question around Mims is how he will adjust to an NFL offense after running a simple offense at Baylor that did not require him to run a full route tree.

Mims impressed the Jets at the Senior Bowl in January and they believe he can be a deep threat and red-zone target for Darnold.

“He had an exceptionally strong week down in the Senior Bowl,” Jets assistant GM Rex Hogan said. “Showed the ability to accelerate to the deep ball and track it over his shoulder as a deep threat. But he also, during the season, on all the tapes that you watch, he shows a guy who can really climb the ladder in terms of going up to catch the ball at its highest point, playing above the rim. Just gives Sam another big, fast target with the ability to adjust outside of his frame and make catches. And, again, the huge catch radius is a plus in addition to the 4.38 speed. So, really excited about adding him to the mix to compete for us and Sam.”

Lost in the conversation about the new guys is Jamison Crowder, who actually led the Jets in receptions (78), receiving yards (833) and receiving touchdowns (6) last season. Crowder was a nice free-agent signing by former GM Mike Maccagnan and he had some big games in which he connected with Darnold out of the slot.

The Jets don’t have much depth behind their starters. Quincy Enunwa has already been ruled out for the season after suffering a neck injury last year and is probably done with the Jets.

Douglas signed Josh Doctson, a former first-round pick of the Redskins, taking a chance the Jets can get something out of a player who has been a bust to this point.

Vyncint Smith and Braxton Berrios are both speedy receivers who had some good moments last year for the Jets, but are not expected to have large roles.

Demaryius Thomas remains a free agent and there is a chance the Jets still could bring him back. Thomas is a favorite of Gase from their days in Denver together and he had a positive effect in the locker room last season.

Anything is better then what we had last year. Well, not anything but you get my point. Anderson will be some what of a lose but hopefully Perriman and the rookie will more then make up for that. Crowder is back so we are good there. Maybe even Doctson can contribute something? He was a first round pick. Enunwa could never stay healthy anyway, so what have we really lose by him not coming back?

that never produced, and was cut classic tag for "BUST"
True, but maybe a change of scenario can help him. No it won't make him into Jerry Rice or Larry Fitzgerald but someone that can contribute consistently and I'm good with that.

some players shine in college but fail to produce at this level and it is mainly confidence... but even with a change of scenery he is just a camp invite right now nothing more nothing less if he assumes he has a job he will not bring it and will be on the street yet again... he had skills in college but so far blah... rather give Cager or Campbell the roster spot at least we can develop them and both of them have that so called chip on their shoulders for not being drafted...

A lot of guys with something to prove including our #2 pick who thought he should have gone much higher. Competition is not a bad thing, particularly when there is some talent in the mix.

CAN'T DEBATE THIS POINT AT ALL! There will be some stiff competition for the 5-6 other WR slots and for the depth chart. I don't think any WR beside Crowder has a definite spot and depth position. Crowder will be the number 2 or 3 at worst. Hopefully the rookie and Perriman step up and claim the number 1 and 2 spots. Honestly speaking, Perriman isn't much to be talking about. His stats over the years have been below average. So to think he's going to come here and catch 80 for 1,000 and 10 Tds won't be the case. Maybe one or both of these undrafted rookies Old #15 mentioned in his previous post will step up.

Perriman has made the roster with the contract they gave him would be a blunder if they cut him with the gtd money he got... Yes Crowder and Mims are likely to make the active 53 so that is 3 of how many tho? do we keep 6 or 7... It would also make sense that Berrios makes the cut but they could list him as a return specialist leaving an additional spot for another receiver option...

I would say at worst, Perriman is a slight downgrade from Anderson. Mims and Perriman together vs. just Anderson is no contest. The WR corps is better now than it was last year.

And so is the blocking, significantly so.

This is about how I see it. If I had to project:

Mims
Perriman
Crowder

Those are your top 3 guys, with Mims and Perriman on the outside. Crowder was immensely successful in the slot role.

After that, Berrios for specials, but he also may see more time in the receiving game. Cager may make the roster as a solid red zone option. Doctson for some veteran depth to the top 3. And V. Smith showed some stuff last year. That's 7 there. If they allot 7 spots total, that is a decent group.

If both Mims and Perriman play up to potential, the Jets will have at least a pretty good WR corps. Not near the best in the league, but pretty good. And Darnold having both more time and more weapons will only help him get the most out of those WRs.

This isn't a "WOW" group. But the potential is absolutely there for them to be solid. It all depends on how Mims develops, and if Perriman is more the guy we saw late in 2019 or the guy who was a bust in Baltimore.

I actually think that there is a decent chance that this group will be very good, especially if we add the tight ends into consideration as to how our passing game will look. I was never a huge fan of Robbie Anderson. Until the second half of last year, I thought that he did a poor job of catching contested balls and that he wasn’t a great route runner. I actually think that Perriman will be an improvement. For one thing, he is a somewhat bigger target.

I think that Mims will be an absolute stud. In the season when he had some drops, he had a broken hand. On the other hand, no pun intended, he frequently made fantastic catches on contested or somewhat inaccurate passes. As for the claim that Baylor ran an unsophisticated offense, why was their head coach so much in demand by nfl teams and many members of this forum? In addition, it is my understanding that at the Senior Bowl practices, he had no problem acclimating to the NFL style route tree. How did it work out for Patrick Mahomes, who was absurdly downgraded before his draft because he supposedly played in an unsophisticated offense similar to Baylor’s? I think that Mims was an absolute steal.

#12 - You hit on it with your TE comment. There are no elite WRs here yet (although Mims has serious potential), but add Herndon, Griffin and RB Bell to the receiving corps and it has the look of a very solid group.

I like that Mims is under the radar. I bet not for long though. If he stays healthy he’ll have 200 catches in his first 3 seasons. I’ll take that all day. He looks like a true #1 WR player. A younger faster B MARSH with big play ability. I’m really exited about him. First WR drafted in a while that had this much potential.
