Brian Winters is about to get a raise

The third-year man from Kent State who replaced veteran Willie Colon this season when the latter was lost to injured reserve early on will cash in on a $1 million pay hike, according to the NFL Players’ Association.

Per the league’s rookie wage scale, Winters’ regular salary jumps to $1.969 million in the final year of his rookie contract agreement. Prior to that pay raise, he was set to make about $675,000.

It’ll come thanks to some accounting measure called the “proven performance escalator,” a device that allows third through seventh round selections to make some more money if they play enough -- enough being 35 percent of a team’s snaps on either side of the ball in two of his first three professional seasons.

Winters started 12 games as a rookie and six more the following season, though that future is in question as the Jets are likely to tab the right guard slot as a position of need in the coming free agency and draft period.

Not sure how that is in terms of other guards on his skill level but if there are savings to be made, let him go. Another Idzik failure....

I don't know what makes you say that? Brian Winters career has really been hard. Call me crazy, but he was called to service long before he was actually ready. He started disastrously this season in the Eagles game.

But what I see now is a guy that did a pretty damn nice job filling in for Willie Colon. It was slow and a little rough, but I do believe he made the transition?

He ended up starting when Vlad Ducasse was put on notice during his rookie season. He was terrible back then and clearly not ready. That should have been pretty hard on his confidence? Constantly getting burned and penalized?

Completely wrong.... His progress this year was awesome... he went from being an absolute bust to being a slightly above average G. A guard that showed improvement with each game.... You know how players get better and become the best at what they do.... They make improvements to their game each and every week.... I am not saying Winters is gonna be the best G ever but he actually played to a level where G play with him and Carpenter isn't a huge need.... Compared to T with Gaicomini being below average and Brick declining and looks like he has only a year or 2 left in the tank.

He was ranked 69th out of 76 T's in the league by PFF.

Edit: My bad, that was Beno.

I had written Winters off after last season. But he actually did a decent job this past season. I didn't hear his name called on many penalties. Pass protection seemed good as Fitz didn't get sacked too much. I'd keep him.

I remember when folks used to curse Slausen's name. He turned out to be a pretty good player but needed time. The guy's improving, let's let him improve.

a starter playing competent football in the NFL while improving is nothing to sneeze at..

+1
He was so much better this year, and improved game by game. I'm content with leaving him right where he is.

You know as much as all the time given to Vladimir Ducasse did not help him develop into a decent player, he was god awful from day one right to the end. It's obvious to me that coaching and time allowed Brian Winters to become a good player. It's nice to see the system working.

When Colon went down so did Ivory's rushing yards. Winters a stop gap player put in to plug a hole. Winters was not ready to go in, but who else did we have? Gio is the problem on the right side. Brick and Mangold are getting too old. We need to address this soon before Brick and Mangold reach 40. Nothing has been done to add to the OL that stands out (Carpenter excluded) in the last 8 years. We need to add top draft picks to our OL. or hopefully Macc and his coaches are teaching (something Rex new nothing about) our younger 2nd and 3rd tier players to take over in a year or 2.
