I know a lot of people on here have him as an average Guard but he went from terrible in 2014 to what a I thought was avg to above avg last year.... Now this year he has been looking very good... The guy just keeps improving....

He got to where he is now via trial by fire. Vlad Ducasse sucked a fat one and the CS could no longer out him on the field, and the ONLY real replacement was Winters. It still took him a very long time to get where he's at least a serviceable Guard. But I cannot give any credit to John Idzik for this. It seems to me even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while........

Brian came into the league and was a hot head impact blocker that first needed to control his temper which hurt the team... Being a left tackle in a division III school, then kicking it inside to guard while also showing off he could be an emergency center was impressive... Then moving from left side to the right side he began to improve his overall body of work... As far as he came from his rookie season, the only thing that bothers me he has played way outside the realm of thinking this team will retain him after this season, just because players like Ivory last season had banner years and got paid... Don't feel this regime will pay him the dollars he will seek, and like last year a few players will bolt for that payday... I hope I am wrong but that is how I feel, so fellas enjoy his play this year but next year we maybe looking to replace him after he bolts...

We may have that diamond in the rough in C. Watts but honestly Winters I hope sticks around long term...

I agree with everything other than Winters is just serviceable... He was that early last year... by the end of the year a quality guard. Now an above average starter who continues to improve.

Generally, i think the pass protection has been good across the entire line.

It's the run blocking that needs to start opening some holes. Not seeing much push there. A lot of one yard and a cloud of dust.

Idzik may not have been very good as a talent evaluator, but I don't think we will ever know for sure. Player development was and is not a strong point of Rex Ryan, and a reason why his greatest success as a HC was in his first two years with a veteran team. Funny how a couple of Idzik's lower round picks (Enunwa and Winters) are starting to bloom in the current environment. Is that because the two needed the time, or is it coaching? Again we probably won't ever know the answer to that.
I also think it is naive to think that the HC doesn't have significant influence in who gets drafted. Very few of the picks in Rex's 6 years as HC, which spanned two GMs are still with the team. Could be Idzik and Tanny, also could be Rex. I'm just glad that era is finished.

Could also be that idzik had 12 picks one year, and missed on prolific receivers in a receiver heavy draft. 2 or 3 or if 20 total picks isn't a great record. Most of his picks are out of football entirely.
Mac in 6 picks, had already beaten idzik, and Mac had a rookie defensive coach.

He is a solid starter, and should remain such for the Jets for a long time.

I just hope the fans don't bash him because he won't ever be a superstar. I remember how fans were so down on Slauson because he took some time to develop into a decent guard - so he left, and went on to be borderline outstanding in Chicago.

Sack - Agree with you again here... I was always wondering why people hated Slauson..... He improved each and every year.. Solid above avg NFL starter.... If the entire OL was described as a Solid Abv avg NFL quality that would make for a great OL...

I never realized people hated Slauson. He was reliable,he just wanted a lot of money and was aging. His Chicago stop was short lived I believe, I think they cut him and he's playing center for San Diego, or at least was.
