I have to say, i was against starting Josh McCown week one. Though i feel this was one of the best decisions the coaching staff has made. It is allowing John Morton system to be operating the right way as the organization is assessing the young players accordingly. Josh is helping out the younger QBs on how to act on and off the field. Lets be honest, Josh has been the Anti-Fitz. He's selfless and a team first individual. I believe that will pay off dividends in developing #5 and # 9 respectively.
With that being said, we all know Josh's durability in this league when he has played. He's one hit away from the Bryce Petty era. Its year three and if it doesnt click now when his opportunity comes, then the Jets definitely may have to look to move on from him. Personaly, i see a lot of Drew Brees in him when Drew started out. First two years didnt show alot of signs of a leader, then year three the Chargers drafted (traded for) Philip Rivers. The organization moved on, mentally, from him. Thats where he seized his opportunity.
Maybe the same could occur with Bryce. Mike Maccagnan is enamored with Christian Hackenberg (even i like his potential). The team is doing everything to develop him the "right" way. It seems as if Petty may in fact be an after thought. Just my humble opinion, i feel Bryce will showcase many Drew'esque qualities once the team makes him the starter and the games still mean something as it was for Brees when he took over for Doug Flutie in '04.
Would be nice to see a young QB at the helm who has been groomed the right way.
