Busy Day for Hackenberg & Petty

For most of training camp, Josh McCown has led the way in terms of reps. But as the Jets held their second to last public practice of camp, McCown remained mostly a spectator while Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty shared the majority of the workload.

“We’re just evening the reps out. He got a lot of reps early, so the other guys are getting a lot of reps now,” said head coach Todd Bowles. “McCown knows what he’s doing and he can play, so we’re trying to give the other guys some experience and some reps.”

Entering his 15th pro season, McCown led the Green & White to their lone touchdown on his only possession of the preseason. Bowles has yet to reveal his quarterback rotation for Saturday night’s game vs. the Giants and the 38-year old McCown kept his legs loose Tuesday with some running on the side.

“He likes to keep in shape. That’s a good thing,” Bowles said.

Besides the running, McCown didn’t do all that much after delivering a great long ball to Robby Anderson in 7-on-7 work. Petty, who was intercepted by CB Derrick Jones, drew oohs and ahhs from the crowd following a lengthy scoring pass to WR Chad Hansen. Saying both Hansen and ArDarius Stewart “showed up” against the Lions with a pair of receptions apiece, Bowles indicated the rookies are beginning to play faster.

One Focus
The Jets don’t think much of the external forecasts of doom and gloom once September commences.

“We don’t care what anybody else says,” said DL Muhammad Wilkerson. “At the end of the day, we’re in training camp and everybody is progressing to get better and to get on the same page, so once the regular season comes there is not an issue. We’re not concerned what everybody else is talking about.”

Their mantra is singular.

“It’s one team, one goal. You guys are asking the questions about people talking about us about the record,” added Wilkerson. “One team, one goal for us is leave all that stuff outside.”

Fired Up
The Jets have three positional battles going on up front and they’ve frequently mixed and matched eight players in with the first unit. The Jets have averaged just 2.4 yards per carry on the ground and Petty and Hackenberg have been sacked five times combined, but OL coach Steve Marshall is excited about the potential of the unit.

“I love this group. This is a good bunch of guys we have,” he said. “These are tough, smart, hard-working… I don’t make predictions, so I’m not going to make predictions. But I’m fired up about this group. These guys are good football players.”

Injury Report
OLB Lorenzo Mauldin (back) remained out of action while CB Morris Claiborne (shoulder) and TE Jordan Leggett (foot) sat out the team’s first pads practice since the Detroit game Saturday night… ILB Darron Lee was on the sideline, but he didn’t participate for a second consecutive day as he battles a stomach virus… Rookie corner Xavier Coleman, who went down in the Green & White practice, took a big step with some snaps in team drills.

This is such nonsense and completely curtailing their speech to fit some stupid narrative that fits for the media. There's not a single player on that team that hasn't thought to themselves at least once, "Motherfucker, we are doomed this season. This is really going to be rough." I'm sorry but no one on that team is stupid enough to actually believe that crappola that Mo is talking about?

Now, I don't blame Mo for saying this fluffy nonsense. You must keep the real truth hidden, but for any fan that's actually level headed, they should know the kind of snow job they are being handed.

Privately, they know they are screwed. That would take form in many different acts. Probably a lot of the players will merely go through the motions this season looking forward to future seasons (and paychecks) possibly even hoping that the FO will be gone after this season? Meanwhile, others will play their hearts out, mostly rookies because they want to demonstrate their true grit and determination.

Agreed, everyone will play for the name on the back of the jersey this year. It's natural I guess.

Dezhone Kizer just announced the starter of pre season game 3 and obviously, he will start the season. Barring injury or a horrible showing in this game. Unbelievable, not mad at our draft this year. I definitely am with last year and not drafting Dak, but this goes to show how damn near every team is moving forward and we're moving backwards. Atleast in the QB spot anyway. How is it that Cleveland may have finally their QB but we can't come close? Don't give the bullshit that his competition is Osweiler, so it was easy. It ain't like McCown is even a above average QB. It all come to either the guy has it or he don't and maybe Hack just doesn't have it. He can't beat out McCown, so maybe we should take that for what it's worth. This Jets curse is ridiculous, wow!!!

If you want a silver lining, if he is their qb that's one less team that would want to take a qb next year??? well, I tried.

EXACTLY. The silver lining for us as avid fans is to look forward to the draft. Now, I will admit it's depressing to be on the cusp of a new regular season and we're already looking forward to the draft?! But it is what it is.

April of next year, more than likely, barring any miraculous unforeseen circumstances, the Jets will have a top 3 pick. Maybe even 1st overall. Goodell will be up at the podium announcing the Jets taking either Darnold or Rosen. The very second that happens then Jets can start to have a little hope again. Right now? If we're being honest with ourselves, we're searching for a something, anything to stay interested in with the Jets this season. It's all part of Woody's long term plan. lets just hope he has the right guy to lead the way?

Darnold/Rosen/maybe Allen are the only hope the Jets have. Hope this defense can take major leaps forward. Hope for an entirely new CS and front office. If the Jets don't get a shot at a top QB next year then no FA's will want to come here nor any viable coaching prospects.

I read somewhere that gruden is looking to get back in it. A number 1 pick and 80 mil in cap space could be enticing

Like I have said before. This year is a win/win situation. I won't be depressed or upset all year. I am gonna hope that Hack or Petty shine but if they don't so be it I love next years QB class. Even if Darnold and Rosen don't come out there are still 3 or more QBs that most scouts view better than any QB in this past years class and a few that would be graded similarly. In Bold are the guys I like.. Now personally I think Darnold is my #1 Choice if he comes out and Rosen is my #3 if he comes out. Obviously #2 choice would be Josh Allen.. The other guys are where most prospect sites have them ranked and in Bold are guys I have seen play and am intrigued by.

Possible 1st Rounders
1. Josh Allen Wyoming
2. Mason Rudolph Oklahoma State

3. Lamar Jackson Louisville (if he comes out)
4. Jarret Stidham Auburn (Baylor transfer but unlike others the spread offense doesn't scare me away. They just need to be coached well. In general spread Offense guys are accurate and strong armed)
5. Luke Falk Washington St

Bubble 1st rounder guys:
6. Jake Browning Washington (Injury Concerns)
7. Baker Mayfield Oklahoma ( Height is his short coming, No pun intended, Ok maybe a little and off-field concersn )

2nd - 3rd Round talent:
8. Nick Fitzgerald

This year is a win/win because of what you laid out before. 2017 gives the Jets a chance to do a lot house cleaning. We are not in contention for so much as a stick of gum this season so instead we can figure out:

1) Is Toilet worth hanging onto? I don't think so but maybe somehow he manages to make a miraculous improvement? As far as I am concerned if things resemble last season even the least little bit he should be fired. He's going to need to demonstrate much better motivational techniques, a better understanding of X's and O's, the ability to strategize toe to toe with great coaches like Bellichick and come out victorious, more discipline in the players, but more than anything better DEFENSE? defense is supposed to be this guys knowledge base and the defense was very disappointing last season. If can't at least master that part of this team given his background then he should be gone.

2) If Toilet gets canned, do you keep Mac and let him hire his guy or do you blow up the whole thing? This is a little more complicated, delicate? Mac has done a few good things, but for the most part he sucks. He leaves the team barren and hopeless, dickless this season. His drafting for the most part sucks. After 3 drafts this team SHOULD be much more talented than it was when Rex and Idzik got canned. Bu8t honestly I am seeing it? If anything they are far worse than when Mac took the job.

But he also never got to hire his guy to be HC? maybe he's got someone up his sleeve that actually knows what they are doing?

3) What young players are in our future plans? Just about the entire roster is full of very young, unproven players. The FO could use 2017 to find out who will sink and who is worth developing further? Who will instantly pop? IMO, Adams and Maye will be instant hits. I like what I've seen from them and have faith they'll be much better players as the season wears on. there's at least one or two more starters in this draft. I most often think either Stewart or Hansen will get their feet under them and really start to become invaluable parts of the roster going forward? I'm not sold Robbie Anderson is the number 2 for this team? He's so frail he could be an injury waiting to happen. He must gain weight and demonstrate long term that he can remain healthy before I planning around him.

I agree with most of this statement.. Especailly since Mac seems to have missed on the higher picks but he has made some good late rd picks that have shown flashes here and there to possibly be very good players in the NFL...

In 2015 and 2016 he found guys that I think are developing well, that he found late in the draft or through UDFA and have had some good game footage in the reg season

1. Anderson
2. Shell
3 Burris
4. Peak
5. Jenkins
6. Harrison
7 Simon

And I think the 2017 Draft might wind up being stellar top to bottom... I love what I am hearing out of camp about Adams, Maye, McGuire, Donahue, Hansen..

So I have my issues with Mac but big picture he is finding talent.. Problem is he needs to hit on the early round guys. Like he did with Williams

It would be so Jets-like if the QB that we really want decides that he doesn't like what he sees and decides to stay in school a la Peyton Manning.
