Can anyone remember the time when the Boston Patriots were a doormat?

I was too young when Joe was healthy, and won Super Bowl III, I became a Jet fan the year they lost to KC at a windy Shea Stadium. After the 69' season, decades of losing followed. All throughout the 70's, Joe was mostly injured and downtrodden by some awful Jet teams, cultivating in the 76' team, which was essentially a high-school football team.
The one universal constant I can remember was, that as bad as the Jets teams were - striving for 4-10 seasons, we could only take comfort that we were not the last place club each year. We could count on our 2 victories over the Patriots and mostly the Bills. As the Jets descended Miami became great. Before Jet games were broadcast on TV, I could only listen to them on the radio. Does anyone else remember hearing Joe Kapp comment that "We stink" LOL referring to his Patriots team after getting beaten by the Jets? For young Jet fans out there, know there once was a time when the Patriots were worst than the Jets.

Been a Jets fan since 1982 and the Patriots were doormats then. If I remember correctly. They came alive during the Parcells era. I think they may have even had a good year or two before Parcells but I honestly can’t say for a fact that was the case. The Patriots have the Jets to thank wholeheartedly that we gave them Belicheap (or he forced his way out the door rather) and we jump started Brady’s career. Bastards!!!

Funny, I mentioned this in a post not too long ago. I'm a fan since the mid-60s and vividly remember the Patriots being worse than us. As Jet fans back then, the Pats were not really our rivals like now. It was Miami ansd the Raiders. God I despised the Raiders (still do). They would always seem to beat us in a big game.

Like us, Pats also had a bunch of joke/bust QBs. Classic one was Jim Plunkett a Heisman winner who was a total disaster, then goes on to have a great career with the Raiders winning two Super Bowls. lol) You would have loved Super Bowl XX where the Bears annihilated them. I remember that vaunted defense just mangling Steve Grogan.

Great, thanks for showcasing how age is steadily diminishing my memory and overall mental acuity. Really appreciate it, jg13.

I agree but I do remember 1968. It is still fresh in my mind. I also remember 1969 when John Elliott was in on Dawson every play. I really feel if sample did not retire we would have won that game & the SB. For three or four years John Elliott was as good a tackle as I have ever seen. I think he had 13- 15 sacks one year in a 14 year season as a tackle. Maynard was getting older & the Jets were not as heavy a team as Oakland or KC but we had joe.

KC has really become a team I care 4 lately. Hahomes seems sharp but idk he seems a bit punky 2 me...

He ain't no Joe, there never will be. I think he was so awesome, we have had nearly a century of down time... Stupid maybe but that's what I think sometimes....

... or KC but we had joe.

Day 1 Prospect

The best game I ever saw Joe play was the 72' contest against the Colts, 496 yards, bombs to Caster. He also almost pulled out a miraculous comeback against the 49ers in 71'. But mostly what I saw of Joe, he was beaten up and played for Jet teams with little or no talent. Jump to the late 70s, Todd had the size but not the arm, Jump to the mid-80s and O'Brien had a rifle arm, best accuracy in the league but melted down, jump to the 90's and Testaverde was a leader but did not have a complete team behind him. Jump to early 2000's, Pennington had the smarts, arm, and leadership but could not stay healthy. I see Darnold as having the size of Testaverde, the leadership and smarts of Pennington, and hopefully he will develop the accuracy of O'Brien. I think of all the Jet QB's I've seen, I see Darnold as having the most upside and potential

Great post. Thanks for bringing up Caster, a very underrated and somewhat unsung Jet great. As for Joe, I feel the same way. Saw him at his best, but recall so many moments of him hobbling around the field. Imagine what he could have achieved with today's surgical techniques and rehab? Many folks don't know that Joe was actually fast and a decent scrambler at Alabama before his knee injury.

I remember the cheetahs sucking. It is a very distant memory that has been buried by then winning the past zillion superbowls in a row and having every call go their way in every game every year for the past zillion years also

They had to change from Boston to NE to spread out the fan base. Kinda BS like everything they do. Like plowing the field to kick a field goal

KC has all the talent in the world, but something about Reid, he's a great coach but seems to be cursed. He is the modern day Schottenheimer, another great coach, but for some reason cursed.

Yup...And that's why the nfc is the only small hope to save the superbowl from a most likely undefeated cheetahs victory

if the Saints can save the day, it will be thanks to the Jets for giving them Bridgewater

After either watching or reading about Bridgewater's play, my wife's mantra has been, "Yeah, guess he wasn't good enough for us." It's not like we had a bunch of can't miss backup QBs on the roster who could supplant Bridgewater. I still don'y get why he was let go. Another dumb Jet roster move.

I agree I wanted Bridgewater here.
