Can Bryce Petty make a move up the Jets' QB depth chart?

Reaching into the mailbag for our New York Jets question of the week:

@RichCimini What is your read on Bryce Petty? Is he surpassing expectations? #jetsmail

@RichCimini: Personally, I haven't seen Bryce Petty throw a football in a competitive situation since the preseason. He was a scout-team quarterback during the season and, as you probably know, practices are closed to the media. From what I've been told, Petty did a nice job in his small role, displaying intelligence, work ethic and a reasonably strong arm. In a perfect world, as general manager Mike Maccagnan likes to say, Petty would have a strong offseason, play lights-out in the preseason and convince everyone he's ready for the No. 2 job. Is he the quarterback of the future? That's what everyone wants to know. The answer is, it's too early to tell.

Speaking on a conference call with season-ticket holders this week, Maccagnan offered some insight on Petty and his future.

"We feel, ability-wise, he can definitely be a quality No. 2 (quarterback)," he said. "The rest is kind of up to him. He has the physical ability to potentially be a starting-caliber quarterback, but he still has to do it on the field and in the preseason, so we can kind of see where he's at. We're excited to work with him."

As you can tell by this quote, Petty has a lot of work ahead of him. He's not a sure thing and he won't be handed anything. He's still making the transition from Baylor’s no-huddle, spread offense to a pro-style system. Maccagnan acknowledged they saw him as a "project" when they drafted him in the fourth round. They're bringing him along slowly, giving him a chance to develop without the pressure of being The Guy. If Geno Smith had that luxury, who knows how it would've turned out?

Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the starter in 2016, if he returns. I think Petty will get a chance to be the No. 2, battling Smith -- if Smith makes it to training camp, that is.

in other words, cimini doesn't have anymore insight on petty than us..

Actually I think Macc said all that can be said about petty right now.

Petty can play back up, He needs to show something to continue being the projected future. Nothing will be handed to him.

Compare that to what he said about smith. "He's under contract"

LOLz not exactly a ringing endorsement..

again, IMO, the jets parting ways with smith is best for all parties involved.. the relationship is absolutely toxic..

looking forward to watching petty's continued development under gailey & fitzpatrick as well..

Not a ringing enorsement!!! BUt why?

Because Petty isn't developing as well as they'd like (Not how I see it)
I have given my reasons in other threads but just a very quick re-cap... He was Fitz's backup as a rookie for the first 3 games while Geno was hurt... That says A LOT!!!

I say they like Petty and they are comfortable enough with him being the back up because he has shown enough for that and they are comfortable developing him to take over for Fitz in a year or 2... HE plays lights out he forces that hand

Shit, I'm hoping he can move up and take the starting job. Nothing against Fitz because he had a great year but isn't a franchise QB and that is what we BAD!

If they bring a vet VA in, it's not good news for Petty. As much as I would hate to see it. think it would make more sense keeping smith then bring in a vet FA.

Think the main thing that will prevent them from bringing smith back is he'll be howling for a trade once it sinks in that he won't be competing for a starting job, but the back up job

maybe his thought process is the jets won't resign fitzpatrick giving him a chance to beat out petty..

or he just might be out of touch with reality enough to think bowles will magically change his mind about fitzpatrick remaining the starter if he's resigned..

what i do know is if we get rid of the guy, these scenarios becomes moot..

Going to be interesting to see what happens with smith in the off season. I feel pretty sure the Jets would like to move smith , and he would like to go.

Cap situation, where Petty is at in his development, if there is a QB in this draft that they like when they pick, if any one will give up anything for him, and how much he is crying for a trade will determine if he is gone.

I wish they would cut him tomorrow, but IMO nothing will happen till after the draft. Both the Jets, and any trading partners will want to see what happens

at what point in the draft FL?? cause if we pick a QB on day one of the draft, smith will have absolutely no trade value.. i would go as far to say drafting a QB as deep in the draft as the 4th round means teams will simply wait for us to cut bait instead of offering a bag of rocks for smith's services..

I'll be stunned if the Jets take a QB in the 1st round. IMO there just isn't any QB's who will be available at 20 that is a blue chipper. There are a few guys with some upside that MIGHT be OK in the NFL, but just not a step in day one guy.

There will be a QB or two taken in the top 10, maybe even at 2, but again IMO i'm not sure they have any more upside then Petty.

If a QB is taken at 20 that means they have given up on Petty already. I don't see that happening.

IMO I think it is very possible the Jets will take a QB between rounds 3-5. If that happens, say good bye to smith.

The lack of good QB's in this draft will give smith inflated trade value. If the Jets take a mid rounder teams will still have trade interest in smith...................maybe.

As valuable as QB's are right now, and moving forward, teams can. and will carry 4 QB's. Don't see the Jets doing it though unless some odd circumstances develop.

sorry, i was thinking the 2nd round.. & if there is a 2nd round kid they love i don't think that means the end of petty.. petty's only making 4th round money & a 2nd round QB's don't break the bank either.. as in, eventionally let the best man win after fitzpatrick's done.. in that scenario, the odd man out would be smith..

Your right. A 2nd round pick doesn't mean the end of Petty as a future starter. Even if smith is still on the team as the back up doesn't mean the end of Petty. It would be very disappointing, but not the end.

A first round pick would more then likely mean the Jets have anointed the new guy as the future hope, and heir apparent to Fitz.

If they take a QB second, smith is gone for sure. More then likely petty would be back up, or in a camp fight for back up.

Think a 2nd round QB is possible depending who is there. This is going to be an odd draft for QB. Some guys with upside, but IMO NO locks

The only really galactically stupid option is keeping Jamarcus around for any reason

And Maccagnan is NOT galactically stupid

Listen if the Jets keep Geno on the team next season, even after resigning Fitz, it should be very telling about Bryce Petty. It should tell everyone that Bryce sucks and he's Not developing like he should.

i could see your point better maine if petty doesn't beat out smith as fitzpatrick's (if resigned) backup..

as in, if the jets can't get a bag of rocks for him, it's not the end of the world if he's in street clothes game day all season next year..

but i don't believe smith will be on the team next season regardless of petty's development or lack there of..
