CB Darrelle Revis: Whether Jets keep me depends on 'class'

Cornerback Darrelle Revis insists the New York Jets hold the cards on his remaining with the team, but that it depends on whether they treat his "situation with class or no class."

Revis, speaking to the New York Post, said he wants to retire with the Jets and isn't approaching Sunday's finale as his last game with the team despite a heavy contract that appears to many as an overextended deal for a cornerback who is well past his prime.
"Would I love to be here? Yes," Revis said in a locker-room interview with the Post. "Will I be back? That's a great question. My thing would be this: Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class? With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here?"

Revis, 31, added that it wasn't a nuanced issue.

"That's the biggest question," Revis said. "It's black and white. It's not very complicated."

Revis has played for the Jets, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, amassing career earnings of $118 million, according to Spotrac. He's currently in the second year of a five-year, $70 million contract that includes $39 million in fully guaranteed money.

"I've been one of the best cornerbacks to ever play this game," Revis said, according to the Post. "I've done a lot of things in this league that a lot of guys currently playing are chasing now. I've impacted the game in a way where it was like, 'Hey, he doesn't give up any catches to the No. 1 [receiver].' I set a precedent."

Revis, who said he still loves the game and can still play, likened the Jets to his girlfriend and said his contract status was similar to dealing with a possible breakup.

"And we've been dating for a long time -- many years," Revis said. "She's been great to me and I appreciate it. I love my girlfriend."

Damien Woody rips ex-Jets teammate Darrelle Revis for 'class' comment

Damien Woody rips ex-Jets teammate Darrelle Revis for 'class' comment

Former New York Jets tackle Damien Woody blasted Darrelle Revis after reading Revis' comments Friday morning about wanting to be treated with "class."

Woody, who played with Revis from 2008 to 2010, made a 10-minute Periscope video, calling out the cornerback for his remarks in the New York Post. Woody, an ESPN analyst, started off by calling Revis "the single greatest player I've played with."

And then he unloaded on his former teammate.

"What the hell is that, man?" Woody said. "He said [that] about the New York Jets treating him or his situation with class. Football is a cold business. It's just purely results-driven. Doesn't matter who you are.

"Everyone knows, watching the season, Darrelle hasn't had a good season by any standard," he continued. "You could question effort. There were times where he turned down tackles. All the off coverage. Receivers are not even scared. They go in like, 'Revis Island? Man, I'm about to kick up my feet and have a daiquiri.'"

Woody wasn't finished.

"See, when you lose leverage, when you're not playing up to par, you don't get to call the shots anymore," he said. "Your skills have eroded to the point where you're expendable. To sit there and say like somehow the Jets are being disrespectful, I think is ludicrous.
"All this stuff about the organization not treating you with class, after the two holdouts, the fact that they signed you to that big deal to come back home, what are you talking about? I'm not understanding. Help me understand, please. I'm trying to figure this out, the whole class thing. I'm trying to figure that part out, because where along the line did the Jets not show class?"

Woody was referring to holdouts in 2007 and 2010. In 2015, two years after trading Revis, the Jets brought him back with a five-year, $70 million contract -- including a $39 million guarantee.

Revis' future has become a hot issue. He incurred Woody's wrath, and that of many fans, by telling the New York Post:

"Would I love to be here? Yes. Will I be back? That's a great question. My thing would be this: Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class? With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here? That's the biggest question. It's black and white. It's not very complicated."

Woody is correct. It's a "what have you done for me lately" sport. And Revis looked bad this season after getting a fat contract.

This isn't about respect, it's about doing the smart thing as an organization. And the smart thing is moving on from Revis. I don't think he'll be a good safety. He isn't willing enough to tackle.

I agree! Plus everyone at some age has lost their edge.........I can't say for sure but it seems like this man has lost his edge......The desire is not there anymore. Out of shape, still hurt maybe but not tackling is playing enough just to get your check as Gil favor would say

Class? CLASS?!? This greedy SOB is talking about Class.
Class would've been honoring your first contract, Class would've been honoring your second contract.Class would've been coming into camp on the second year of your THIRD contract with the Jets in shape. Class would've been giving maximum effort week in and week out this season, making over a million dollars a game.
For me, the Jets showed tremendous class not benching your ass weeks or even months ago when no name receivers were treating you like their bitch.
This delusional asshole should apologize to the Jets and all the Jet fans for his performance this year and say he would not blame the Jets for letting him go the second the clock hits 00:00 sunday afternoon.
As far as retiring a Jet,when you are released and nobody signs you, you will have then retired as a Jet.
Us Jet fans truly deserve better than Revis negotiating, yet again, through the media. He will be an all time great Jet and hall of fame player, that forced a trade because of greed, helped a division rival win a Super Bowl.Came back home for a final payday and shit the bed, a final F U to the Jets organization and it's fanbase.
Show some Class Darrell, hang 'em up with a little dignity.

So long Revis

You were great at one time but you will be remembered as a classless act who tanked it at the end

When they put your name up on the Ring of Honor, I plan to emit one long loud boo. Those sitting in the first few rows of the lower level should throw a dollar bill on the field. You do not deserve to have your name up there with the likes of Joe Klecko and Curtis Martin.

I agree with everyone here. Revis is probably one of the least likable stars in sports

When he holds out, or plays hardball in negotiations, it's all business.

When the team looks to make a business decision based on his lack of contributions and shedding his salary, suddenly it's about class.

Are you kidding me?

Then again, when he was younger, I sensed something like this would happen. I sensed that he would be the type to claim it's all about business when he was a rising asset, but then try to talk about emotion and loyalty when his value was diminishing and he was not playing up to his contract.

he is the epitome of selfish, boorish AH. Anyone that buys his BS should be taken out to the wood shed to have a come to Jesus meeting.... another words for being a stupid fool.

And now Revis has completely lost the love of the fans. Quotes like this lessen the amount of cash he would have made as a fan favorite over the span of his life.

Revis set the precedent himself. He used his leverage to holdout multiple times, now when his play has gone to shit and he shows up out of shape he wants to change the rules of the game.

Here's an idea, instead of bleeding the Jets of every dollar in your prime, you could have easily extended your deal at your peak and made good money, and then talked about being an on field coach in your twilight.

You get what you get,and you don't get upset.

I'd cut him immediately, I'm worried he's a bad example. Our secondary can let up 50 points with or without him. His quality of play isn't setting an example to the youth.

Before he started talking contracts, I was all for keeping him at less money, but now I'm worried he's a cancer. I don't want his selfish behavior infecting anyone else. God knows Richardson is a risk already.

Revis and Richardson will not be on this team next season. If we're rebuilding, we need to start by getting rid of overpaid former stars, and meatheads who talk a big game, and disappear on Sunday afternoons.

Agree, Richardson has just plummeted his trade value. It's hard to let him go for nothing, but it's time.
