Reports this draft may contain the most trades in NFL history seems more and more likely by the day...

The Falcons could be eye-balling a move for Dante Fowler

The Falcons have made at least one trade in each of General Manager Thomas Dimitroff’s seven drafts in charge, some of them bigger than others.

And according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the next one might be to acquire the pass-rusher they’ve needed for a few years.

With the traditional “it shouldn’t be a surprise” qualifier, Ledbetter suggests the target is Florida defensive end Dante Fowler.

New Falcons coach Dan Quinn recruited Fowler when he was a Gators assistant and coached him two years, but the need goes beyond their familiarity. The Falcons badly need to find a pass-rusher to go along with their defensive makeover this offseason.

“There is a lot of discussions already about moving both ways with a lot of our peers in the league,” Dimitroff said. “A lot of it has to do with what goes down with the top three picks. That’s going to set the tone for how much movement there is into the top 10 and even in the top five.”

That third spot, currently owned by Jacksonville, could be the pivot for the Falcons, as the Jaguars could justify using it on Fowler, defensive tackle Leonard Williams or a receiver such as Amari Cooper. Then again, the Jaguars have sufficient needs that they could find a fit deeper in the draft, and the eighth spot would suffice.

Jacksonville general manager Dave Caldwell worked for Dimitroff, so there’s also a familiarity there that could help facilitate a deal.

Browns break bread with Breshad Perriman

Eventually, it will be easier to list the teams that haven’t shown interest in former Central Florida receiver Breshad Perriman.

Per a league source, Browns G.M. Ray Farmer and other team executives had dinner with Perriman on Sunday night in Orlando.

Perriman last week visited the Jets, Titans, and Dolphins, and he has drawn interest from the likes of the Panthers, Bears, Lions, Steelers, Eagles, and Ravens.

Mike Mayock of NFL Network previously pegged four receivers for the top 20: Amari Cooper, Kevin White, DeVante Parker, and Perriman. Cooper is regarded as the clear favorite to go first. After that, it could be any of the other three.

The Browns currently hold the No. 12 and No. 19 picks in round one. The extra first-round selection resulted from the decision in 2014 not to take receiver Sammy Watkins but instead to trade down with the Bills. The Browns ultimately selected no receivers in last year’s draft, even though they knew Josh Gordon was facing a one-year suspension. (It later became a 10-game suspension, but he has since been suspended for another year.)

Regardless of the order in which they come off the board, look for another round one run on receivers — especially after the five taken in the first round last year (Watkins, Mike Evans, Odell Beckham Jr., Brandin Cooks, Kelvin Benjamin) have shown that, as football becomes more and more of a passing game, more and more guys coming out of college are pretty good at catching the ball.

Dolphins reportedly “covet” running back Todd Gurley

When Georgia running back Todd Gurley got good news at the medical re-check recently, it cemented his status as a first-rounder (such that he wasn’t already).

And as we get closer to the 2015 NFL Draft, it’s looking more and more likely he’s going in the top half of the first round.

Via Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins “covet” Gurley, which might mean the floor for his torn ACL-triggered fall could be the 14th overall pick.

“He’s a talent. He’s definitely a player that his ability stands out and shines,” Dolphins assistant general manager Eric Stokes said. “He’s an exciting guy to watch. We’ve enjoyed working through that process with him and seeing him. From there, we’ll see where things shake out.”

They might have to wait, because there’s no guarantee he’s going to be there when they pick.

As news circulates about Gurley’s condition, more people are beginning to feel his draft status is going to be closer to where it would have been pre-injury, and that could mean the Dolphins might have to turn their attention to another back, or another position.

Do you trade 6 for 13 and 44?

yes...I would for sure. 3 players in the first 44 picks...yes, please.

I'd be happy with something like:

#13 - Peat OT Stanford or Perriman WR UCF
#37 - Strong WR AZ St or Dorsett WR Miami if Peat rd 1 and Jake Fisher OT Oregon or Clemnming OT Pitt if we go Perriman rd 1
#44 - Bernard McKinney OLB Miss St
#70 - Grayson QB Co St. or Mannion QB Or St.

Leonard Williams - DL - Player
The Tennessean does not expect the Titans to select USC DT Leonard Williams at No. 2 overall.
Beat reporter Jim Wyatt says the Titans would pass on a player many consider the draft's top prospect because they have "bigger needs." That's certainly true, although drafting for need is what GMs who are trying to save their job do. Wyatt added that if the Titans don't trade out of the No. 2 hole and don't take Marcus Mariota, he thinks they'll take Alabama WR Amari Cooper.

Authorities won’t pursue DUI charges against P.J. Williams

Florida State cornerback P.J. Williams said recently that the teams he’s visited with have told him that his April 3 DUI arrest shouldn’t affect his draft status all that much.

On Monday, teams considering adding Williams to their roster later this week learned that there won’t be any charges for him to deal with during his rookie season. Williams’s attorney Jonathan Simon passed along word that authorities have decided not to pursue charges against Williams.

Williams admitted to having a few drinks at some point in the evening before he was arrested early on the morning of April 3, but he and his attorney disputed the version of events originally presented by police. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, paperwork filed in Florida about the decision not pursue charges indicated that video evidence in the case didn’t corroborate the charge.

Before the arrest, Williams was expected to be drafted late in the first round or early on the second day. Having the charges against him dropped probably won’t raise his draft stock, but the dismissal could keep him from sliding out of that expected range once the draft gets underway.

Steelers like outside linebacker group in this year’s draft

The Steelers head into the draft with no shortage of needs on the defensive side of the ball with outside linebacker among the places they could attempt to address in the early rounds.

If they do go that way, it sounds like General Manager Kevin Colbert likes their chances of getting a good player. During a pre-draft meeting with the media on Monday, Colbert said, via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that this year’s crop of players at the position is as deep as he’s seen in the last 10-15 years.

Colbert called them “real impact-type players” and coach Mike Tomlin added that he thought an increase in the number of players playing the position in college schemes similar to the one the Steelers run is a positive for the team.

The issue for the Steelers in the first round may be the number of other teams looking at edge rushers. Dante Fowler, Vic Beasley, Bud Dupree, Shane Ray and Randy Gregory are all potential picks in the first half of the first round, which could leave the Steelers short on options at the spot with the 22nd pick.

Given Colbert’s feelings about the overall quality of the group and the team’s need for help at corner and elsewhere, that may not be a major problem for Pittsburgh as they try to improve their roster this week.

McCloughan thinks a trade could happen if Leonard Williams falls to 5

We noted this morning that USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams is viewed by many as the best player in this year’s draft, but might still be available when Washington is on the clock at No. 5. If that happens, Washington General Manager Scot McCloughan will feel like he’s in the catbird seat.

McCloughan said at his pre-draft press conference today that if Williams is available at No. 5, he expects his phone to be ringing from teams that would like to trade up and get him. After signing a couple of big defensive linemen in free agency in Terrance Knighton and Stephen Paea, McCloughan doesn’t necessarily think he needs to draft another big defensive lineman at No. 5.

“It might bring a trade more into play,” he said. “We do feel good about our defensive front.”

McCloughan indicated that an edge pass rusher may be a more important priority for Washington than a 300-pounder like Williams.

“A pass rusher, that’s the most important thing,” he said. “They’re hard to find. We’re very lucky to have Ryan [Kerrigan] on the team, he’s one of those players, and hopefully not just in the first but throughout this draft we’ll add more pass rushers.”

The best-case scenario for Washington could be to trade the fifth overall pick to a team that wants to get Williams, then to pick up a pass rusher later in the first round. Then again, if Williams is as good as the draft experts think he is, maybe the best-case scenario for Washington would be to stay put and draft him.

Marcus Mariota - QB - Player
ESPN's Paul Kuharsky believes there's a "decent chance" the Titans trade down from No. 2 overall.
If they don't, Kuharsky reports the Titans "seem to be feeling the pull" of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota. Per Kuharsky, the Titans believe Mariota's skills will "translate into Ken Whisenhunt’s system," and that they will "adjust for him a bit." (Playing to a player's strengths, imagine that.) Judging the buzz around the Titans' pick as a whole, they seem to want to move down, but Mariota will be the most likely pick if they stand pat.

Browns and Skins talking trade...Browns want the pick in front of the Jets...

Report: Browns have been in touch with Washington about No. 5 overall pick

A team with a pair of first-round picks has reportedly been in contact with a club selecting in the top five in Thursday’s draft.

The Browns have communicated with Washington about the No. 5 overall pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Monday. Cleveland has also reached out to other clubs with top 10 picks, Rapoport said.

The Browns select 12th and 19th in Round One, giving them the trade chips necessary to make a move up in the selection order if needed. What’s more, the Browns have shown they are willing to make a deal; they were involved in three of the five first-round trades in 2014. First, the Browns traded back from No. 4 to No. 9, gaining a 2015 first-rounder in the process. Later, they traded up to No. 8, selecting cornerback Justin Gilbert. Finally, the Browns moved up from No. 26 to No. 22 to take quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Manziel struggled as a rookie, which could make quarterback a position the Browns look to address in the draft. That would likely require a move up from their No. 12 spot.

Randy Gregory - DL - Player
In a poll of 21 NFL personnel men, Nebraska's Randy Gregory was the top vote getter as this year's top pass rusher.
This is a pure pass-rush ability poll, not a specified position. Gregory got ten first-place votes, while Clemson's Vic Beasley garnered five. Florida's Dante Fowler handled 2 1/2 first-place votes, USC's Leonard Williams got two, and Missouri's Shane Ray received 1 1/2. However, in a poll of 20 scouts, Gregory received 11 1/2 first-place votes as this year's front-seven prospect most likely to bust. Long on talent but facing off-field issues, Gregory looks like a boom-or-bust prospect.

Dante Fowler - DL - Player
NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Falcons are looking to trade up from No. 8 overall in Thursday night's draft.
Per Breer, the Falcons' target is an "impact defender." Atlanta badly needs pass-rush help. Florida's Dante Fowler is widely viewed as the top edge-rushing prospect in this class and could come off the board as early as No. 3 to the Jaguars. Jacksonville may be looking to move back to acquire more picks.

Marcus Mariota - QB - Player
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns "covet" Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.
Rapoport reported earlier this evening that the Browns were exploring a trade into the top 10 and have talked with the Redskins about a move to No. 5 overall. That's unlikely to land Cleveland Mariota, who will likely be a top-two pick, and at the very least come off the board at No. 3 overall where the Jaguars would probably love to trade back. The Browns have ammo at their disposal.

Todd Gurley - RB - Player
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport mentions the Jaguars, Texans, and Dolphins as potential landing spots for Georgia RB Todd Gurley.
Note that all of the teams named by RapSheet select in the top half of the first round. On the board at No. 3 overall, the Jags would presumably target Gurley in a trade down. Coming off November ACL surgery, Gurley could be "eased in" behind Arian Foster and Lamar Miller in Houston and Miami, respectively.

Kevin White - WR - Player
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns have had conversations with the Redskins about trading into the top five.
Cleveland sits at Nos. 12 and 19 in the first round, while Washington has the No. 5 overall pick. We suspect the Browns would be targeting a wide receiver, perhaps West Virginia's Kevin White. Per RapSheet, the Browns have "touched base with most teams" selecting in the top-ten picks. Cleveland is not one player away from contention, but this isn't an organization that has made many sensible moves since Jimmy Haslam took over as owner. Nothing can be ruled out.

Dorial Green-Beckham - WR - Player
Yahoo's Charles Robinson says not to be surprised if Missouri WR Dorial Green-Beckham goes to Houston at No. 16 or Cincy at No. 21.
Thanks to off-field woes, Green-Beckham has been removed from "a lot" of draft boards. But there's a good chance someone takes a gamble early because of potentially dominant talent. Green-Beckham (6'5/237) has Kelvin Benjamin size but runs faster (4.49) and scored 12 touchdowns in 14 games as a sophomore in 2013. The Texans currently have Cecil Shorts penciled in opposite DeAndre Hopkins and the Bengals have Marvin Jones/Mohamed Sanu across from A.J. Green.

Amari Cooper - WR - Player
One AFC personnel man says the Jaguars like Alabama WR Amari Cooper "more than they are letting on."
There continues to be a lot of smoke around Cooper to the Jags at No. 3 overall. Although they have Allen Robinson locked in at X, they've been desperately trying to surround Blake Bortles with as many weapons as possible. GM Dave Caldwell dumped a truckload of money on TE Julius Thomas and made an unsuccessful play for slot man Randall Cobb. Cooper can play both the slot and Z, much like incumbent Marqise Lee.

Danny Shelton - DL - Player
SI's Peter King says the Browns are "really hoping" Washington NT Danny Shelton is there at No. 12 overall.
The Browns "love" Shelton, a 6'1/343 Haloti Ngata kind of prospect. He'd be an immediate upgrade for a run defense that ranked 28th in YPC allowed last year. There's also talk that Shelton will have some role on passing downs after posting nine sacks for Washington last year.

Phillip Dorsett - WR - Player
Saints coach Sean Payton reportedly "gushed" over Miami WR Phillip Dorsett.
After moving on from Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills this offseason, the Saints are in the market for pass-catchers. Beat writer Mike Triplett calls wide receiver "the position most likely to be addressed at some point in the first three rounds." Dorsett is a bit similar physically to Brandin Cooks at just 5'9/185, but may be available on Day 2. He clocked sub-4.3 forties at his Pro Day and has drawn some DeSean Jackson comps.
