Confidence Rising for Christian Hackenberg

It was just one short pass during one red zone series during one OTA practice in early June.

It was pretty nonetheless.

What was "it"? Merely a 3-yard touchdown pass from Christian Hackenberg into the outstretched hands of veteran WR Eric Decker over the defense of veteran CB Morris Claiborne on the right side of the end zone at Tuesday's practice.

Hackenberg, the second-year signalcaller battling with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty for the Jets' starting QB job, downplayed the significance of the "score," which came indoors, in the Atlantic Health Training Center fieldhouse, due to the rainy conditions outside.

"It was a good look," he said. "Deck made a great play, great adjustment, so that’s good to get those types of plays in the spring."

Asked later about the play, "Hack" elaborated, but only a little.

"Yeah, I think it was Mo out there. He was pressing up inside," he recalled. "Deck had a fade, so he kind of held him at the line pretty well and Mo kind of played on top of him, so I just threw on the back shoulder and saw if he could make a play and he did. Great play by Deck."

Great play, dare we say, by Hack, too?

To be sure, Hackenberg had a few offline passes in Tuesday's practice. And there's no way for us to handicap the QB derby at this point. But last year's second-round draft pick has been getting noticed for some strong throws at recent practices.

Head coach Todd Bowles wasn't asked about Hackenberg at his news conference today, since a few more urgent topics took precedence. But last week he was upbeat about his youngest QB.

"He's coming along pretty good," Bowles said. "He's getting a grasp of the offense and learning it. ... I've seen spurts."

Hackenberg agreed that his comfort level is higher this year than it was as a rookie, even though he's learning his fourth offense in the last five years (two at Penn State and his second in his two Jets seasons).

"I'm not going to say night and day," he said, adding, "I feel a lot better going in there, having a great understanding of what’s going on, being able to have the time with Josh and the coaching staff and really hit it hard in terms of what we’re installing. [Coordinator John Morton] is putting a lot of stuff on us, so we’ve had to study and work extra, and that’s helping. Being able to go out there and actually take those reps and do it live has been great, so I’d say I feel a lot more comfortable than last year."

Comfortable enough to handicap his position in the QB competition at this early stage? No, that's not how Hackenberg rolls. But he did have a strong statement when asked by Record columnist Tara Sullivan why people around the NFL seem to have such fixed opinions about his NFL ability already.

"That’s their opinions. I can’t really speak for them. It’s whoever it is," he said. "But I know what I can do and I know what my coaching staff feels that I can do, so I’m just confident in my abilities and when I get my opportunity to play I’m going to do that.

"I’m confident that I can play at this level and play at a high level, so I'm going to go and, when I get my opportunity, take advantage of that."

This season seems to be set up for Hack to play. All these vet cuts etc-etc, gives the Jets an excuse to play the kid without pressure on them or Hack. Who's going to complain and how can they? The fans, owner, players or media? Not!!! Anyone with eyes and ears can see and hear the Jets are in total rebuild mode here. So how can anyone expect this team to win anymore then 2-3 games this year?

This might give a 2-3 year pass to TB and MM also. The CS and GM can let the team develop with Hack as they play throughput the year. This is probably why they are getting rid of all the vet players. Not just for the cap space but also there won't be any old vets to complain about, we want to win now. There isn't any left on the team really. This young team can just play and grow together and hopefully to success.

I think you are correct about the season being set up for Hack to play. Interestingly, most of the FA money went for OL with contracts to Beachum, Winters, Johnson and Ijilana so that the young QB has some protection. Also surround him with a young core of WRs and TEs to grow with.

Exactly and I'm really looking forward to the season. I'm not excited about It because I know their going to stink. 4-5 wins at most of their lucky but I am very interested in seeing this.

They were just talking about this on NFL Live today on ESPN. Are they tanking already? Is it time to see what Hack can do or should play Mccown? Damian Woody said what I and others have said for months now. What's the point on playing Mccown or even having him on the team if the Jets are in total rebuild mode. Hack might just suck, he might but it sure would be nice to actually see it and find out.

Woody said it today, the kid red-shirted a full year and if he isn't ready to play now then what was the point of you drafting him in the first place? Even worse, if your not going to let the kid play to see if he sucks or not, what the hell was the point in you drafting him in the first place? Agreed Woody, agreed!!! If this isn't the time to find out what this kid can do with the young team they now have, then it will never be.

If they do not play Petty or hack then TB should be fired

I still want Petty to win the job. For some reason, Hack doesn't come across as a leader.
