Cost of suspension to a player

When a player is suspended for one or more games, does the team still pay them for those games?

If not, if a guy is making 2,000,000 per year, losing the income from two games costs the player $250,000 in lost income, and who knows what else.

If they know this, and still behave stupidly enough to get suspended, some of these guys must be real jerks...

Some of these guys are real jerks. Getting suspended for drugs or beating up on a woman and the like is just plain stupid and unprofessional. As a professional athlete you should be aware of the possible consequences to your career for such infractions and conduct yourself accordingly. The fines in some cases don't seem to register desired results with some of these guys as is demonstrated by repeat offenders. Sometimes though I believe it's a case of going out to party with the gang and not realizing, all though someone should have intervened if they were aware and were a friend, and not realizing just how drunk you really are and getting into your vehicle to drive yourself home which we all know is an accident waiting to happen. Far be it from me to criticize too harshly in this instance because I can recall having made the same mistake during my stupid and foolish young and wild years. I'm not 100% certain but I believe that is what happened with Herndon this time. So, as long as it's not a habit thing I don't think I will throw him to the wolves just yet. I don't know if he was who you were referring to, or players in general, but that's my feeling on the subject as a whole and sometimes the fines just don't work which is why the league follows up with suspensions to reinforce the fines.

I've always said they should pay a fine, lose game checks and still should have to play. They should work for free plus pay fines and lose money. For many of them its just a real expensive vacation.

My point exactly Cheaterhater. It's no secret that the male brain isn't, ( normally ), functioning properly at that young age. However most guys learn from their mistakes and take corrective action and those that can't do that are not ready for any type of career that requires self discipline. They should get a job at burger king until their brain moves from the pants to the head as you so eloquently put it.

One other thing: with all of the coaching and guidance and working with adults, that they experience in high school and college, as members of a high-profile, successful program - I would think they would be at a very high level of maturity by the time they arrive at the NFL.

As far as your second paragraph. It's completely the opposite. Being good athletes, high schools and colleges allow them to get away with their transgressions off the field, often hiding them to keep them eligible to play. This gives them a sense of entitlement and causes a lack of responsibility.
There is absolutely no excuse for any player to get a DUI. The League and NFLPA offer free car service and most teams offer free anonymous rides for their players.
The Jets have one of the best services, players can call for a Town car, Limo or party bus 24/7 free of charge.
