Could Both Idzik and Rex Be Back Next Year?

It is no secret that Woody really likes Rex. Even though he didn't go to bat much for Idzik a few weeks ago when Woody gave his presser, I'm sure he really doesn't want to fire him. Have to pay his remaining contract, and look very stupid for hiring him in the first place.

From what I'm reading on these boards, a lot of fans like Rex, but just feel it's time for him to go due to the team coming off a horrible season, and not having been to the play offs 4 straight years. But still they have a soft spot for Rex.

Most fans really seem to dislike Idzik, and want him gone. It would really be dumb to fire Idzik, retain Rex, and do the whole thing over again. Just can't see that happening.

Problem in firing Rex, it looks like there could be 10 HC's fired this off season. The pickings will be slim. If Idzik is retained and Rex fired, how many of the few qualified HC's are going to want to come to a team that has a lame duck GM? Who cut the legs out from under his last HC. (The whole QB control thing, the not spending money in FA, ect)

Will Woody want to bring in another HC, just for the sake of making a change? Knowing he's not going to get a top quality guy? Bad year to be looking for a HC.

IMO, the only way to go is, either they both stay, or they both go.

Do you think it is possible they are both here again next year?

Fantastic post. I've been saying this all along back on JI. Fire Idzik and keeping Rex will never happen. I really think its all or nothing and like you said there may be several HC's fired.

Honestly I would be for them getting one more year so show it works. I think we all loved Idzik and his plan when he first came here but the early return doesn't seem great. We all knew this wasn't a quick fix and we need patience. Well now is the time for patience and suddenly we don't have any?

I just hate to give up on Idzik plan so early. Overall I feel this team is going in the right direction. A decent QB could make all the difference. Idzik has set things up perfect for this off season and whoever our GM is will have a great opportunity to slay it.

This is the most critical off season in a long time. Perhaps Idzik has learned from his mistakes, every GM makes mistakes. Outside of our record I don't think Rex has done anything to show he deserves to be fired.

A few keys moves which the Jets can easily make with the cap space and draft position we have can easily make us a very good team next season.

i also believe you fire or keep both of them..

my guess is rex & idzik both get fired..

maybe idzik gets demoted to a position he can't do any more harm..

Demotion is possible I guess it happened before with Bradway. Would we then promote from with in? Can't expect a new outside GM to keep the old one around can we?

if idzik is demoted woody absolutely can't leave him with enough power to be a threat to the new GM.. period, end of story..

i said it here yesterday, if woody insists on keeping him around let idzik count paper clips..

LOL

Didn't say it was probable , but surly possible.

Woody is in a pickle here. His fan base is in revolt. That's a bad situation for a guy with $ 1,500,000,000 invested in a team. Under the current circumstances, people will be voiding their PSL's , and looking at an empty stadium.

He has to do 1 of 2 things. Something dramatic that will get the fan base interested again. Harbraugh might be one way to go. Personally I don't think he is the right guy for this team, and won't be here long. He's not Parcell's coming in to save the franchise, and then splitting either. I really don't see anyone out there who is going to have an impact in firing up the fans next year, and get people excited to pack the stadium again.

The other way to go is to stand solid in the decision he made last year, and sticking with his hand picked guys. Idzik staying won't please most of the fans, but if they pick up one of the QB's in the draft, a vet, and start winning a few games in the beginning of the year, it will give the hardcore fans some hope. Winning cures all.

As I said, it's not likely, but it is certainly a possibility.

What I do believe is, They MUST both either stay, or go. The more I think about it, allowing Idzik to keep the GM title, but no power, bringing in some one like Scott Pioli as chief of football operations, and keeping the other two on might be a solution at least for now.

we both agree you keep or fire both.. honestly, I believe woody would stay with rex if he could sell it to the fan base.. I'm not sure he can..

turning idzik into a figurehead & bringing in a respected football guy is intriguing..

but they would still be forcing rex on the new guy though & we've seen that movie already..

Woody bought the team for 635 million your quoting what it's worth now.. He would make a nice profit if he sold it for 1.5 billion..LOL

Of course when we figure the profit we have to consider the split 1.5+ billion for the stadium, but still he's made a nice profit.

Hmmmm, who would be the top candidate to buy it? Dolan? Boy that would be fun

Charley Casserly is 66 years old. If Woody wants to dig deep into his purse, I could easily see Casserly being named Chief of Football operations.

Casserly loves Rex Ryan. Thinks he should have been named coach of the year last year. If Casserly has anything to say about it, Rex will be back. I guess Idzik can do the books, and take the trash out if Woody insists on getting something for his money.

Yes, both could be back.
What if coming in Idzik laid out a 3-4 year plan to Woody and things are going roughly as he planned? What if he said we need to get the salary cap fixed and find a QB and try to get younger, and that accomplishing those will not be easy and we'll pay for it with losses? What if he cautioned Woody that QBs are hard to find and that if we don't find a decent one then we might bottom out in year two as we build the roster and keep trying to fill the QB hole. What if he predicted a couple of years of struggle, and told Woody early on that last year's 8-8 was fool's gold? If something like that happened, then Idzik can say to Woody, "This is what I said it would be like, and the injuries to the CBs made it worse, but we need to stay the course. Remember, it's only year two of a four year plan." That's a scenario that might lead to both returning.

Welcome Benton

Well Idzik probably did tell Woody something along those lines, sans the 3-13 season. The problem with it is, Idzik had 20 draft picks in the last 2 years. With that he could have laid the foundation down for future years with young promising players. Very few of these players have shown anything. Richardson of course has, but not much else. The ole "it takes 3 years to evaluate a draft" thing, just doesn't apply anymore. They only sign 4 year contracts now. So you get 3 years of poor play then a contract year? No help form the draft.

Half the players from this 12 man draft aren't on the roster. The FA's have been a disaster. No-matter what Idzik told Woody, he's just not a football guy. No football guys were involved in the interviews of the GM candidates. They were all businessmen, who hired an accountant.

It was a mistake. Move on before more long term mistakes are made. If Idizk is allowed to hire a new HC, and spend the 47 million on FA's, and the FA's work as well as the ones last year, this team is shafted for a minimum of five years.

I would much rather have a guy like Casserly determining the Jets future, or hiring the guy who is going to determine the Jets future, then a failed no football knowledge accountant.

As I said above, I have no problem with Idzik being the cap guy, I just don't want him near the draft, or FA's

Just my opinion.

Friday is here. Nothing remotely important occurs affecting the Jets for the next three days. There will be loss number 13 on Sunday but we all know that is a lock. There will be Gen0 stumbling, bumbling and fumbling and then, thankfully the 2014 season.fiasco will be done

Then comes Monday, arguably the most significant day for this franchise in 19 years. WRECKS and Idzik will be hitting the bricks together and we can start building a better management team and a brighter future
