Could Chan Gailey become the fall guy for Jets problems this year?

The Jets have fallen back to Earth with a thud this season, primarily because their offense has fallen off a cliff.

And that could put the architect of that offense on the chopping block (though he’d ultimately be a victim of his own success last year and the expectations it created).

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News lays out the case for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey becoming a convenient fall guy for the Jets this offseason (assuming they don’t fire head coach Todd Bowles).

Citing a 27.3 percent decline in scoring and some gross statistical numbers (which are truly gross), it’s easy to look at what they’ve done this year and declare that someone be held accountable. But again, if Gailey hadn’t coaxed a career year out of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick last season (and a franchise-record 5,925 yards of total offense last season), it’s hard to imagine he’d be under the same level of scrutiny.

But if the heat rises on Bowles’ seat and he feels the need to make some changes, Gailey could be the first deck chair tossed over the rail of a titanic disappointment.

There have also been injury issues which cooled the Jets this year (specifically wideout Eric Decker), so this might be an instance where clemency is in order. Change doesn’t always fix things. Sometimes having a reliable quarterback does. And if the Jets are going to continue with Bowles and transition to a younger or different quarterback, having an experienced coach like Gailey might be exactly what they need.

I don't think he should be to be honest....I really think the loss of Decker and the poor play of Fitz has hurt gaileys offense.... I don't think he isn't guilty of some mistakes (i.e.. not running the ball more in specific situations) but not enough to get him fired..... I think Kacy Rogers is to blame on the Defensive side of the ball more than Gailys offensive mistakes

some, if not multiple coaches are going to get canned at seasons end.. as far as gailey, excessive shotgun formations & two years running of powell as an absolute afterthought hasn't been a plus with me.. at all..

but if we keep bowles (how wonderful would that be, BTW) i hope gailey stays.. i lobbied for him hard right here at JFU & i believe he's been somewhat sucked into the cluster **** that has been this season.. that, & if nothing else, he has a great track record with young QB's..

as I said on the forum's facebook page, I believe Gailey is handling Petty better than he did with the egomaniacal self proclaimed football god, Fizzlesticks...

Chan could get a season long reprieve if Petty keeps progressing over the remainder of this season...

but who really knows...

Classic Bowles, throw everyone else under the bus to save himself.

All I can say is we need players

And if you don't, you find a way to get the most out of what you have (There's a guy up in New England who does that very well).
But Chan hasn't changed his system one iota. You can predict what he will call in certain situations. For instance, Fitz's arm wasn't strong enough to throw the deep out. Petty's arm is. Yet when Petty relieved Fitz, Chan kept calling short passes and didn't atke advantage of what Petty could do.

Chan's inflexibility is a liability.
Yes, they could use batter players, but they also need better use of what they currently have.

I would rather see Kacy Rogers replaced. Our defense should have been MUCH better than it has been this season. Gailey has some excuses but Rogers has none.

Gailey has NEVER done well developing QB's & looking at his past proves that. 3 years Petty hasnt progressed much on many basic things. OC chooses who is the QB coach & Jets never seems to be able to get one right also. With Petty & Hackenburg who is even a bigger major QB project, Jets needs a solid OC & QB coach for Hackenburg to have any chance at all to play in 2-3 years. I'd like Jets to get an OC that has worked with some great QB's & knows the work those QB's did to become great & the system that was used. This isnt Gailey & his old time style that produced our current 12 mil QB. Lets find a OC & QB coach that has worked with P. Manning or Packers Rogers. Rogers was waiting 3 years & started out like he always was a starting QB.

Petty has played 2 years and 2 games.

Bingo.... he is an abject failure and should have been fired months ago. His recent comments about Gilchrest being another coach on the field was laughable... i mean really dude the secondary was a fking mess all season and you tout this guy... what a fool.

Thrusting the deep ball involve blocking by the line, something we don't have.

If this team believes the qb answer will be answered by petty or hack, it's hard to completely rip out your offensive system and coaches without hurting young QB's. I think our biggest flaw is talent, and that takes time.
