Could Joe Douglas be gearing up for 1 more big time FA signing?

Jets were gearing up for a veteran receiver with a big cap hit. Didn’t work out and that’s okay! Onto Plan B: One more significant contract.
Mike Garafolo reported before free agency how they were interested in Tyrann Mathieu will he go get him now? Mathieu has been linked to the New Orleans Saints prior and post NFL Draft but the Jets have been adding safety talent left and right via the rookie free agent portal and a signing like Mathieu could solidify the back end of the secondary that most Jets fans would really become giddy.

What are your thoughts?

Would signing him make the Joyner dude expendable
Jets like running some 3 safety sets and Jordan Whitehead thrives in the box in that hybrid safety/linebacker role. Adding Mathieu would put the Honey Badger and Joyner at safety while giving Saleh the safety presence in the box. Linebackers in this defense need to be proficient in space tacklers, run proper pursuit angles and have some ball skillz. reason why they convert safeties to linebackers. so having a known safety that plays majority up at the line of scrimmage as one of the three linebackers with CJ & Quincy solves a lot of problems and creates defensive matchups in our favor.

key question then who is then expendable?
serious question how many players that are good are going to get cut?

Tony Adams Illinois (got gtd $$$) could make the team as a special teamer which would knock Will Parks off the roster.
Joyner, Whitehead are not only mainstays but likely starters.
Coaching staff and front office like Elijah Riley a lot.
Ashtyn Davis not a part of this coaching staff era. Could become a trade chip this off season.
Jason Pinnock drafted as corner converted to safety could be in jeopardy of a roster spot.
Jovante Moffat claimed end of last season, practice squad player right now. Developmental.
Zane Lewis signed as a Rookie FA last year from Air Force could make the practice squad.
Kai Nauca another Saleh guy could double down as S/LB role.
Davin White another hybrid S/LB role.
Four safeties tryout at rookie minicamp could land a training camp invite with practice squad potential.

If not mistaken that would make 15 safeties some could play linebacker as well.

Kwon Alexander? He has had some injuries, and did not live up to his huge contract. But he is familiar with the system, is still 27, and could provide some solidifying depth to the LB corps.

I doubt Mathieu happens.

After this offseason, and the way this roster looks now, a player like Mathieu is not out of the realm of possible. at some point, this team is going to attract guys who want to win now.

Maybe, but this is where the football media play a huge role. If they keep pushing the SOJ narrative, despite what the Jets have done, it just keeps perpetuating the idea that the Jets are futile. They could have 10 home run drafts in a row, but some major elements in the football media will continue to push SOJ.

The Jets haters have a real impact on the team and its ability to both bring in and keep players.

I'd prefer a real linebacker instead of JD's method of converting safeties to LB.
They need someone with size to work along side the lighter guys who can be overpowered at the line of scrimmage.

when Nasrildeen and Sherwood went down, and they were replaced by Quincy, the D definitely looked better.

ok, Mathieu is gone. The thread is still a valid one... I think we are still in addition mode.
