Cover your eyes: An update on the Jets' 2014 draft class

One year later, the Idzik 12 still has the look of a bad NFL draft.

It was supposed to be a watershed draft for the New York Jets, a 12-player haul that would replenish an eroded talent base, but the grim reality is that only one of the 12 picks will be a starter in 2015 and only two, maybe three are locks to make the team. Eight remain on the roster.

It's one of the reasons why John Idzik is working in Jacksonville and why the Jets have a new front office and scouting department.

Anyway, let's take a look at the Idzik 12. Warning -- This review contains graphic material that could be harmful to impressionable fans:

Safety Calvin Pryor (No. 1 pick, 18th overall)-- He will start at strong safety, his natural position, and that should mean better results. Because of an ill-conceived secondary, he was forced last season to play 523 snaps at free safety, only 88 at strong safety, according to ESPN Stats & Information -- and he looked uncomfortable.

Tight end Jace Amaro (No. 2, 49th) -- The new coaching staff won't try to make him something he's not. He'll be an H-Back, not a traditional, in-line tight end. Rex Ryan's least favorite former player has a lot to prove. With six drops in only 53 targets, he had the second-highest drop percentage in the league.

Cornerback Dexter McDougle (No. 3, 80th) -- He has missed almost two full seasons because of injuries, so we're talking about some serious rust. He was only recently cleared for team drills. McDougle has some talent, but cornerback is a crowded position. At best, he could be the No. 4 corner.

Wide receiver Jalen Saunders (No. 4, 104th) -- He'll be remembered as one of the Jets' worst picks in recent memory. He showed nothing as a receiver, muffed a couple of punts, annoyed the coaches with his attitude and was released only a month into the season. He's currently with the New Orleans Saints.

Wide receiver Shaquelle Evans (No. 4a, 115th) -- After missing last season due to shoulder surgery, a healthy Evans has flashed some potential on the practice field. Problem is, he'll be buried on a crowded depth chart in training camp and may not get many chances.

Guard Dakota Dozier (No. 4b, 137th) -- He was an overdrafted, small-school player who basically took a rookie red-shirt season. The Jets have a lot of bodies at guard, so they're giving Dozier some reps at center. Versatility could be his meal ticket. Right now, he's facing an uphill battle to make the team.

Linebacker Jeremiah George (No. 5, 154th) -- Idzik drafted a 5-foot-11 linebacker for a coach (Ryan) who likes big linebackers. And people wonder why we say there was a disconnect between the two men. Fittingly, George plays for Idzik's current employer, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cornerback Brandon Dixon (No. 6, 195th) -- This was a nice, late-round find, but they cut him in training camp and he landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he averaged 10 snaps per game. He probably would've started for the cornerback-needy Jets.

Wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (No. 6a, 209th) -- He looks the part, all right. He's a chiseled 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, but he's too inconsistent to be considered a serious threat to crack the top five at receiver. He's getting a lot of work, which can only help. He'll have to make a significant jump in training camp to make the team.

Linebacker IK Enemkpali (No. 6b, 210th) -- Like many of his fellow Class of '14 teammates, Enemkpali will need to do something in training camp to make him stand out from the more experienced competition at his position. Advice: Kick butt on special teams.

Quarterback Tajh Boyd (No. 6c, 213th) -- This was a Rex Ryan special, proof he should stick to evaluating defensive players. Boyd was painful to watch, got cut and ended up in the FXFL. Currently, he's hanging by a thread on the bottom of the Pittsburgh Steelers' roster.

Linebacker Trevor Reilly (No. 7, 233rd) -- Finally, a good draft pick. Reilly is a smart, hard-nosed player who made a mark on special teams. Every team needs a couple of guys like Reilly, who is backing up Calvin Pace at the strong-outside position.

Seems like a pretty uneven evaluation.

Amaro had his struggle but he will be a big time contributor this year. He is the only one from the draft that did anything last year.

I'm really hoping one of the WRs develops this year. Both were good picks but got overshadowed by top talent WRs passed over and injuries.

I think his point was in a very deep draft, one of the deepest ever, there is little to show for it, especially for having 12 picks. Now, if you look at what the Packers did in last year's draft with far fewer picks, and much lower draft position...actually that goes for most teams, not just the packers actually, they really landed 1-2 blue chip players in various rounds.

It doesnt appear jets landed any blue chip players and maybe 1-2 servicable talents. In an A+ draft, our picks likely grade out lower than any other team, IMO.

I get that but its also only been one year. Can we give these guys some time to develop?

The draft definitely fell short of expectations, that can not be over looked.

with the caveat that you can't really judge a draft class for a number of years, it's hard to argue that the 2012 draft class is shaping up to be a terrible class and a lost opportunity. i still have hope for pryor, amaro and even mcdougle, but unless they turn into near pro bowl caliber players, the class is destined to not end well.

It has only been a year, but if we're honest with ourselves:

Could develop into blue chip players for us or at least be servicable: Amaro and Pryor
Outside shot of being a stud, more likely servicable: McDougle
Are praying to the NFL gods they even make our roster:

Evans (who drops every other pass and makes Stephen Hill look like Jerry Rice, reports were the Jets planned on cutting him during final cuts last year)
Dozier - already out of the OG derby, which says something since our RG spot is a mess, and it is him vs Dalton for a roster spot
Enu - I would love to see him stick, but WR is a numbers game, so we'll see.
Reilly - I think he sticks as a special teams player, but may need to beat out Erin Henderson, Babin, Howare, Joe Mays, and Deion Barnes...which I think he does. I think Pace, Coples, and Mauldin are all locks to make the roster.
IK Enemkpali - I love, love, love this pick. I hope he sticks but he'll have to wow coaches...who just drafted some guy #6 overall that will make the DL numbers tough when you factor in Mo, Richardson, Harrison, Williams, Barnes, Douzable...do they keep IK too...especially with Bowles love affair with DBs?

By week 1, we may be down from 12 to 4 players left on the roster from this class after, to your point, 1 year...that's a sad story.

what do you think of my above thought on this class?

Considering the talent and depth in last years class, and what we have to show for 12 Picks, 2014 might go down as the worst draft in Jets history, and thats saying a lot because for many years the Jets cornered the market on dumb draft picks.

we havent shown that not to be true yet. 2014 is the last draft class we can evaluate, and taking Pryor over guys like benjamin, cooks, clinton-dix, deone buchannon, and maybe even Bridgewater may end up being a disaster, similar to historical drafts.

Im not saying I was onboard with all those names, im just saying when the rubber meets the road, we're going to look at picks 19-31 and say, WTF?

I honestly think we could say that for every rd in the draft after 18 too, but maybe the Amaro pick if he starts catching the ball consistently. I do think he can be a borderline pro bowl talent, IMO.

Good point and its not emphasized enough, even by me, but you're right, judging a draft class is more than just judging your own picks, its also about the players you passed on to take the players you took. You can live with it if you passed on a better player, but still got a really good player regardless. But when you pass on what turns into an All-Pro, and the guy you took instead is a BUST or JAG (Just Another Guy), then passing on that All-Pro weighs heavily in the equation.

You mean like drafting Bryan Thomas and letting Ed reed fall to the Ravens 1 pick later?

And without idzik being stingy with the cash we don't have all this cap space to spend on free agents. Much of the success for this year's off season is bc of idzik. Next year, we'll see what Mac can do.

He has less cash and most likely a worst draft pick.

Having said all that, if Idzik was still the GM, I would have no confidence in him to lead us forward.

having a legitimate football guy over glorified bean counter was worth idzik's epic fail, IMO..

& bowles has the look of a pros pro kind of coach.. we'll see soon enough..
Oh I agree, I'm extremely high on this new regime, the coach and the GM, it just sucks that we had to blow what was widely viewed as one of the best and deepest draft classes in decades, WITH 12 PICKS IN OUR KITTY, to get here. It saddens me to think how much better we would be RIGHT NOW if Idzik even hit a double in that draft as opposed to such a colossal fail. But you're right, if he didn't screw up that badly he's probably still here, so it might turn into a blessing.
