Cuomo says New York supports sports returning, without fans

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has generally sounded a cautious note about when his state will be ready to reopen, but when it comes to pro sports, Cuomo is optimistic it can happen soon — as long as stadiums are empty.

Cuomo said today that New York wants to see the Bills and other pro sports teams return, but he doesn’t think plans to return should include packed stadiums.

“New York State is ready and willing to partner with major sports teams that are interested in playing games safely, without fans,” Cuomo wrote on Twitter. “If our professional sports teams can make it work (& be safe) on their end, we’re supportive.”

Cuomo indicated that baseball, basketball, hockey and football will all be able to return. The other sports would presumably return before the NFL kicks off its season, which would give the NFL some time to see what works and what doesn’t. But Cuomo seems to believe pro sports can and will get started again, relatively soon.

Cuomo is delusional if he thinks the Jets, or any NFL team will play with an empty stadium if other teams don't have such restrictions. DeSantis, in Florida, for example , has offered to have the Jets/Giants play in Gainesville. Given that choice, what would any team do? We all have national TV options.

I don’t get this. Makes no sense to me. Do these people think that the fans can catch this but the players and staff are immune? The viral shedding (contagious time) of covid starts before ANY symptoms start to appear. All it takes is for one person to bring this into the locker room and it will spread like wildfire. It is a CONTACT sport, the exact opposite of distancing.
as much as I want there to be a season, (same as the rest of you) until there is some type of vaccine or proven medical course of treatment it has the potential for disaster.

I AGREE 1,000 percent but it will be torturous not having any sports (football) this season. Gotta do what's best for the people and having a season may not be what's best.

curious, how you feel about the states opening back up? people cant afford to stay home forever, I understand that, but obviously, we will see a rise in cases the more people are out.

Also, it seems lots of people are tiring of the whole thing and are starting to go out more any way. especially now that we have nice weather. My wife even said she noticed a number of people in the grocery store with no masks this weekend.

my 2 cents- this is not over by a long shot. social distancing has certainly slowed it and opening back up will , at the least, make things somewhat worse

can we do sports with face masks? buckets of hand sanitizer on the sidelines? I don't know. I do know, that this sucks

I see both sides. There will definitely 100% be a resurgence once things open back up. We will fortunately be a little more prepared for the second wave. People tend to forget, and most will forget everything that they learned (less masks in the grocery store is exactly what I’m talking about). Then there are those that still (unbelievably) think that this was a hoax or blown out of proportion by the government and the media. These are the ones that I want to take to work with me for 15 minutes. That is all the time I would need. Basically, IMO, this is far from over.
On the other hand, I see the point of the opposition. I am fortunate to still be going to work every day. I know that there are many who cannot. I also know that there are many who have zero money coming in or have lost their livelihood completely. (And a $1200 check isn’t going to do shit.) these people I understand their need (not want) to go back to work. It is a bit of a double edged sword. They need to provide for their families but unfortunately some will die because of it.

This is difficult. Everything about this is difficult. I've been fortunate in that most of the classes I teach are online anyway, and the two classes which required me to travel to campus shifted to online right after midterms. So I have been able to remain fully employed through this. Not everyone is so fortunate.

I believe part of the thinking of having these events without fans is that it can:

1. Provide entertainment for a society that will still be predominantly confined to home, and
2. Allow for a controlled environment of just players, coaches, and team and league personnel.

There is going to be a spike. A softer opening will gradualize that spike. But there is still going to be an increase when we start to open again. Perhaps sports, especially football, without fans will encourage more people to stay home more often.

Disagree there will be a spike. There is already good evidence from a place like Georgia, which opened up early and even went with an opening that was beyond the guidelines. There has not been a spike in Georgia. I think the virus is petering out. And it will not return even when it gets cold again. I think there will be a full NFL season.

I definitely want sports as much as anyone. I don't see how contact sports can do it. Sports are really the only thing that I think should wait to reopen. The rest of the economy can work around this thing. I live I Dallas and I have been living my life as normal. Only thing that changed is they shut down my business and its harder to get things. I coach kids for soccer and we just moved outside and started training again 6 weeks ago. I don't hardly think about the virus on a daily basis. I don't wear a mask. I've began traveling more to go camping. My brother who lives in NYC feels differently.

I've realized I don't miss sports as much as I though I would. If the Jets were good then I might. Since they have been garbage for over a decade I don't worry about it. I'm just going to continue to work and live my life the best I can.

Thats the part we all will have to live with. I live in Dallas, Texas and we haven't seen hardly any cases compared to other places. My choice is to go bankrupt or take the minuscule risk of getting the virus. Or the even smaller risk of dying from it.

If people don't want to take the risk then they should stay home.

Yup. I'm glad I'm not one of the people who has to decide when things open back up. There is no right answer to that and you're right, people will die because of it.

I'm amazed thatpeople can think the government has blown this out of proportion. I don't think you should need to bring them to work for 15 minutes . Just seeing the death tolls and videos on the news from NY alone is proof that the government SHOULD blow this out of proportion if only to scare enough people and make them stay inside

There will be plenty of people who will quickly forget this and go back to normal. There is also going to plenty who don't forget and stay home as much as they can for a long time or until ther is a vaccine.

I here you, but if we never had shut down anywhere, then the risk of catching this would have been a lot higher and it would have just kept spreading. I'm no expert but the math seems pretty clear

And I sure wouldn't want to be one of the people in the percentage that are in the hospital and be the roughly 20-25 percent of those on a vent that don't survive.

I'm self employed in construction. I plaster. I had a few jobs that made good money, so I had to do them or lose them. We wore masks and gloves and stayed away from everyone we could. We washed our hands a lot and did the hand sanitizer thing. We have stayed home part of the time, but couldnt afford to miss out on the high paying jobs.

If I were rich, I'd stay home for sure

I really don't see how we have a safe football season either

If the spike comes, it would come in time.

I hope you are right, but I fear that people will become too aggressive with tossing aside protections.

The good news is that evidence of the virus petering out is building day by day. States are opening up all over the country, yet the infection rate and death rate are declining overall. My confidence is building that the virus will just disappear. And yes, lots of folks are going too far and too fast (think of the beach scenes and nightclub scenes that have been shown in the media), all while the infection rate and death rate are both declining. I'm fairly optimistic.

Agreed. But that's why the results in Georgia are so encouraging. I think they've been open around 2 weeks or so, and so far no significant increase in cases or deaths, no stress on the hospitals. I think of Georgia as the canary in the coal mine.

Caveat/disclaimer to the following - I'm a CPA.
If you haven't done so already, I would suggest going to the CDC website and look at the time-line for COVID-19 and other deaths by demographic (age, race, state, etc.). It was a really eye-opening to me for the following: a) vast majority of deaths are 65 years and over; b) C-19 only caused deaths at 65k while pneumonia only is at 85k; media reported death total for C-19 include 27k which is a combination of C-19 and pneumonia related causes; and flu related deaths are down this flu season. Leads me to believe that: although highly contagious, C-19 is not as deadly as advertised (pneumonia appears deadlier); the data has many crossover opportunities, thus subject to highly subjective interpretation. It certainly leaves me with a lot of questions like why no outcry over pneumonia, why isn't the honest data being reported, and why haven't vaccines stopped all flu deaths and occurrences, and why would we expect any different result if there was a C-19 vaccine. That being said, some real interesting decisions will have to be made about when to re-open everything.

While I do think pneumonia is of a significant concern, especially in populations with weakened immune systems, what is most concerning about COVID-19 is the combination of its contagiousness and its mortality rate. It isn't as contagious as some viruses, but it's still highly contagious. And it isn't as deadly as some conditions, but the mortality rate is still high.

It's the two together that make this the most dangerous outbreak we have seen in our lifetimes.

I have been to that website, and it's the new cases graph that I find most encouraging. While the data is bouncing up and down (noisy), it clearly already peaked in early April, and has been trending down ever since. No increasing trend seen since re-openings started in early May.

That decline may have been caused by the impact of stay-at-home taking hold. We'll know more in a month or so.

Actually, the stat I saw is that 66% of infections happened at home. So that policy may have actually worsened matters. Plus, the incubation period is around 2 weeks. Openings started happening already within that period and yet, the decline in new cases is still happening. I think there is good evidence already that the virus is petering out.
