Dante Fowler on the trade block too?

Jags seem like the obvious match. They have a defense that already has a great pass rush without the ill-fitting Fowler, but a question with Bortles at QB. To me, a deal makes a ton of sense.

Jags can't really afford Teddy. They can't afford to pay Bortles and Teddy. Bortles cap hit if cut is $26 million. Teddy would add $10-15 million, remember his contract is $5 million plus incentives. Fowler is getting $7 million so they would save that. They are also well over next year's cap so they don't have the ability to restructure other deals. When they gave Bortles his extension this season. They went all in on him.

The reasoning went something like this: Teddy is a starting QB, and all indications are that his knee is fine. So you keep him with Darnold and trade a respected (albeit, well traveled) veteran QB who’s coming off a pretty good year statistically. He cited the Rams as a good option for McCown to replace Mannion. The Rams would have a more stable QB situation, the Jets would be set with Darnold and Bridgewater, and the Jets get a draft pick from the Rams.

It’s not that crazy when you think about it. If Darnold hits a rookie wall, Teddy keeps the season alive.

The Rams are another team that can't afford to add a QB. They have just over $1million in cap space now with only the top 5q counting. They actually have to create some space before week 1. They also have to pay alot of their core next season. The don't have an extra $9 million to pay McCown.

Offer a conditional 5th round pick for Fowler and leave it at that. He hasn't shown anything yet. even if he was a high draft pick. So was Gholston, Dee Miliner, Dewayne Robertson etc,etc.......

That's exactly what Fowler is worth!

If that's the case, I keep three QBs. I like McCown in the QB room a lot more than a later pick he would net.

Mehta now reporting that the Jets called the Jaguars about Dante Fowler’s availability. Stay tuned. This could have merit. Fowler is 24 years old and had 8 sacks last year.

The Bridgewater for Fowler trade discussed around here might happen in some form or another. Makes sense for both sides.

Would rather get an OL.

If the Jets spin Bridgewater into Fowler, it would have to be considered a massive coup for Mac. He would have spun a short-term signing into the young pass rusher this team has needed for some time. This team gets a pass rush, and the defense will be scary good.

I'd also like to see what may shake free regarding OL as more cuts begin. Some team is going to cut a talented lineman because he doesn't fit the organization or blocking scheme, or they drafted some kid who is surprising people, or they need to free up salary.

Fowler is just a one year rental. A pick in return would be a major coup, especially if Mac can get a day two pick for him.
Fowler doesn't make this team a contender this year. Even if he buys an extra win or two, it just means picking later and less often next year.

I would think if they got Fowler, they would keep him. They have the cap room. You bring a young pass rusher in to a team that needs one, and you find a way to keep him.

As I responded in another thread, any deals for Fowler or Mack would have to be contingent on giving us permission and oh say a 48 hour window to get them signed to a contract extension. Nobody is trading for either of the two unless they can get them extended, unless their teams are practically giving them away for nothing of value in return, and thats obviously not happening. So it has to be contingent upon getting them extended first.

Wouldn't Jax have to jet the same extension from Teddy in Return?
Teddy is not going to agree to be a backup long term. Jax is 20-30 million OTC next year, add 7-10 of Teddy's incentives plus what $12-15 min salary now Jax is $50 million OTC?
It doesn't work for them. They have to get picks for Fowler, they need bodies, cheap to replace the product bowl level players they are going to be forced to release.
And before you say Fowler's $7 mill ,I already factored that relief. Bortles extension is guaranteed so cutting him is not possible. $28 million dead cap btings them $76 million OTC .

I think people are over rating this defense. I wouldn't even call them good at this point.

Well. maybe barely good. Run defense is good or at least it was against the Giants but the secondary needs to spend more time practicing and less time picking out a nickname they can't live up to.

Yeah the secondary has a lot of big mouths on it with little return so far.

I would. The run defense is very good. I need to see a bit more out of the secondary, and there is no pass rush, but they can stop the run.
This defense would have been terrific ... 30 years ago ... but now its a passing league and your defense will get torn a new ass every time they face a franchise QB if they don't have anyone who you can pencil in for 10+ Sacks and a slew of hurries off the edge. Stopping the run is nice, once upon a time it was the most important thing a defense could do, but not anymore, now the most important things you can do is rush the QB (first and foremost) and cover. Rushing the passer is first because you can only cover for so long and if you give the upper echelon QB's too much time they will rip you to pieces.

I hope someone explains the difference to them between talking a good game and playing a good game pretty quick or every team in the league is going to pass attack them into oblivion.
