McCown.
Bridgewater can bring us a draft pick or two
Darnold can take the reigns mid season. The first half of the season is brutal. First 3 games come so fast followed by the top Defenses in the league. No need to get the kid hurt before he has a chance to learn the game.

I’m in the group that favors seeing Sam Darnold ASAP.

But my common sense tells me that McCown will probably be starting the season. He’s ahead of the others. But Teddy Bridgewater has a chance to prove himself. I’d love to see him overcome the injury. 2018 is about growth anyway. We’re still not where we need to be in order to be a serious contender.

Base case scenario, Bridgewater earns the starting job. He plays well enough to be traded to a contending team who loses a QB to injury, for a high draft pick next year, and Darnold takes over to start 2019 with better talent around him via FA and another draft.

This would be the fast track to playoffs and beyond.

If Bridgewater is the starter and playing well, do you honestly envision the regime trading him mid season? Best case scenario is he lights it up in preseason and his value increases dramatically.

It seems like a starting QB goes down almost every year in training camp or the preseason, so this could be a possibility. I think Bridgewater needs to demonstrate he’s capable of playing in a game and taking hits, in addition to picking up where he left off two years ago, in order for the trade value to be high.

You’re right, though. If Bridgewater is playing well it would complicate things, because Darnold is the future.

I’m envisioning a scenario where the Jets are out of the playoffs late in the season, and a 7-5, 8-5 team loses their starter for the year. If Bridgewater is playing well, we could take advantage of a desperate team.

I'm hoping that a team with a possibility of contending looses their starter early and we get a Bradford like offer for Bridgewater. Even a player and 2nd round pick would be nice.
I'd love to see Darnold prove himself in the preseason but that's hard to do. He has very little experience at the position, the preseason game is very vanilla. The opening 3 games are winable but come in a very short span, 10 days. And then we face some of the best Defenses in the league. Jags,Broncos, a break vs Colt's and the Vikings.
I just think it's wise to give Darnold a chance to learn for the first half of the season.
The o line needs to gel , learn the new blocking scheme before risking the potential future QB.
I'd hate to see him get hurt early or even just take a beating. Sitting the first 7 games does nothing to stunt his development, but trying to get him prepared for 3 games in 10 days, then face arguably the best 3 defense in 3of the next 4 weeks could derail his development a great deal.

I am anxious to have him take the reins as many of us are, but, not anxious enough to want him to start. By all accounts he is impressing in training camp, but that's training camp. It's not the same as facing a defense that has the mindset and experience of actual NFL play. I would prefer that he warm the bench and learn for a few games before risking a potential confidence destroying or career ending injury behind an "O" line that hasn't yet become cohesive.

Has he signed his contract yet?
Later

The last I heard, NO, but it's not a problem I don't think. Last time I checked there were still 9 others unsigned. It will get done I think by end of training camp.

I hope you didn't mean by the end of TC. It better be done by the first practice.

Mayfield just signed his contract this evening so Darnold Should be signed tomorrow. Josh Allen will likely sign soon after Darnold.
The salary is slotted so the hold out is based on offset language. He will be in camp before the first practice.

Good catch. I meant during first part of training camp actually. I didn't imagine him being a holdout but he is, sort of. They are still negotiating the "Offsets part of his contract". As Tony mentioned Mayfield just signed so we should get the word soon. Josh Allen is still unsigned as well as about 5 others. I'm hearing that they expect to have the deal done by Friday.
