It seems like a starting QB goes down almost every year in training camp or the preseason, so this could be a possibility. I think Bridgewater needs to demonstrate he’s capable of playing in a game and taking hits, in addition to picking up where he left off two years ago, in order for the trade value to be high.
You’re right, though. If Bridgewater is playing well it would complicate things, because Darnold is the future.
I’m envisioning a scenario where the Jets are out of the playoffs late in the season, and a 7-5, 8-5 team loses their starter for the year. If Bridgewater is playing well, we could take advantage of a desperate team.
I'm hoping that a team with a possibility of contending looses their starter early and we get a Bradford like offer for Bridgewater. Even a player and 2nd round pick would be nice.
I'd love to see Darnold prove himself in the preseason but that's hard to do. He has very little experience at the position, the preseason game is very vanilla. The opening 3 games are winable but come in a very short span, 10 days. And then we face some of the best Defenses in the league. Jags,Broncos, a break vs Colt's and the Vikings.
I just think it's wise to give Darnold a chance to learn for the first half of the season.
The o line needs to gel , learn the new blocking scheme before risking the potential future QB.
I'd hate to see him get hurt early or even just take a beating. Sitting the first 7 games does nothing to stunt his development, but trying to get him prepared for 3 games in 10 days, then face arguably the best 3 defense in 3of the next 4 weeks could derail his development a great deal.
