Darnold not concerned with team's pursuit of other QBs

The Carolina Panthers have spent the offseason seeking a replacement for starting quarterback Sam Darnold, but he isn't concerned.
"It's truly whatever happens happens, because at the end of the day it's out of my control, and I know that," Darnold, 24, said on the "Bussin' with the Boys" podcast created by Tennessee Titans tackle Taylor Lewan and free-agent linebacker Will Compton. "I have enough security in myself where I can say, 'I know I'm a good quarterback. I know I can be a good quarterback in this league. I've proved it.'
"And I know there's a team, if something happens, that would want me."
Darnold, the third pick of the 2018 draft, admitted what the Panthers have done has been "a little shot to the ego," but said he is prepared for whatever happens.

Carolina general manager Scott Fitterer recently began the offseason by saying the starting job was "open." The team then pursued Deshaun Watson to the point it was willing to give up three first-round picks, at least one player and other draft picks for a quarterback facing 22 civil suits involving sexual misconduct.

The Cleveland Browns ultimately landed Watson in exchange for three first-round picks (2022, '23, '24), one third-round pick (2023) and two fourth-round picks (2022, 2024). Watson also got a record five-year, $230 million deal guaranteed.

The Panthers, who own the No. 6 overall pick in this year's draft, spent the next week at the pro days of quarterbacks Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh, Malik Willis of Liberty and Matt Corral of Mississippi.

Fitterer followed those visits by saying Darnold was "in the lead for the job," but didn't rule out using the sixth pick on one of them.
"At the end of the day somebody has got to answer for it," Darnold said of whatever decision is made at quarterback. "Whoever it is. The GM. The coach. If something happens like that, we'll see what they have to say, and that's about it."
The Panthers acquired Darnold last April in a trade with the New York Jets, giving up a sixth-rounder in 2021 and a second- and fourth-rounder in 2022.

Darnold, who went 13-25 in three years with the Jets, won his first three starts for the Panthers. He finished 4-7, missing six games while recovering from a shoulder injury, and again ranked statistically as one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

While he was out, the Panthers brought back 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton, the top pick of the 2011 draft who was released in 2020 shortly after coach Matt Rhule was hired.

Newton went 0-5 as the starter and remains a free agent, although Fitterer and Rhule haven't ruled out bringing him back.

Darnold said he learned a lot from Newton and welcomed him as a teammate.
"He was a great dude," Darnold said. "A great guy in the quarterback room. A great guy to have around in general because his energy is unmatched. And then I come back and play and he's a great guy.
"I really have nothing bad to say about Cam."
Darnold has been careful the past four years not to say anything bad about the Jets or their fans who booed him. He said his experience in New York helped prepare him to handle the criticism he is getting now.

But he admitted some of the criticism bothered him.
"The part that pisses me is off is when people judge my game, like how I'm playing," he said. "Then I'm like, 'Go strap it up.' I'm [like], 'You're a fan and I respect you as a fan. You can talk all the s--- you want, I'm not going to do anything at the end of the day, but take it easy.'
"What if I was like, 'The house you just worked on, piece of sh--. You're so bad at tiling. You should really go get another job. Really think about your profession.' Sometimes you want to say stuff like that, but you can't."
Darnold said he told Jets management it was "making a mistake" when the team made the trade and then went on to select quarterback Zach Wilson with the second pick of the 2021 draft.
"At the end of the day, it's not my call," he said. "If they don't think I'm the guy, it is what it is."
Now Darnold's potentially in that position again at Carolina.
"I'm just trying to learn Coach McAdoo's system," he said of new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. "That's where it's at."

Sam is a good kid. i really hope he gains traction somewhere; and maybe that is with a team who has an elite starter.

Trubiskey got to go to BUFF, and w/o a "guru" there to stifle Allen's development, Trubiskey was able to see an offense played by a QB who used all of his tools...i.e., his legs.

Sam has those kind of tools, and needs to be coached to use them the way Trubiskey was in BUFF. in a limited sample size, once Mitch started using his tools, he looked comfortable again.

I've said this before and people can attest to it there are two features a QB needs one is instincts the other is how to use his peripheral vision, and to this point in his career even dating back to Southern California he has neither. He has that gun slinger mentality, is capable mobile quarterback but he lacks those two feats. Understand, even he said it himself he makes too many impulsive decisions instead of relying on those instincts that one develops in studying tape and working on in practice every week. If he would not zone in on a particular group of players and focus more on the field area he could then manipulate the field of defenders but he lacks or does not have the willingness or patience to train himself to garner that skill.

Some players seen in highlights like Rodgers, Mahomes even Burrow look one way but throw to the opposite area is because they seem to be locked on to someone but they are diverting the defense's scheme to open up another option that has more room to catch n go.

Film study is tough. It can be tedious and some simply can't translate. It all comes down to comprehending it and translating it to the field. I believe that's why it was so tough for Sam to roll with adjustments on field and at halftime. I don't think He was able to take what he was being shown and make the adjustment on the field. Football IQ. The great ones have it, the rest become back-ups.

He bounced back nicely in that game. I was happy with how he responded. Stupid throw though.

i know it was not his fault the TE's coach made O.C. trying to be creative and failed miserably. Don't blame him but it is still his first pass of his career which it is a shame.

It definitely was one of the dumbest calls ever made.

just my opinion FWIW...

1.) the throw wasn't that stupid. he didn't get enough air under it... had he done so, Bilal has a really nice gainer, and a probable TD.
* I don't think he DID NOT see Diggs; i don't think he accounted for distance the ball had to go to get over Diggs.

2.) i think it was one of the better plays to get a player in space that Sam saw as a Jet. Bilal was running alone. True, it's a designed boot leg to the opposite side of the field, but he was open. if Sam didn't feel the DLinemen on his back, he could have set himself and threw a laser.

truth be known... that is the first time i saw that play. Scout's honor!

And then everyone jumped on the bandwagon
“ That’s what Farve did and look how he turned out”

Yea right LMAO
Wasted our franchise pick and set us back a few years
Oh well
Let’s hope our new guy doesn’t set us back either
I kinda get the feeling we will find out in his sophomore year
Either way
Skeptically optimistic or
Skeptically pessimistic
I really don’t know and don’t think anyone knows
Except a certain few

From someone who didn’t want to draft that kid, based on how he finished the end of last season and what he’s doing now in the off season I am extremely optimistic that we have finally got our guy . Trouble is it could be like the Knicks getting Ewing and having Jordan in The Chi . We finally get our guy and low and behold the AFC is loaded with superstar QBs .

I was at that rain soaked pro day he held and was not impressed asked his agent for him to do some drills and was told that he has a script he is running. At the time was visiting my cousin reason I went to that farce of a pro day. I was really excited when I saw the RB at Louisville and hoped we would draft him, but nevertheless he was taken by the Ravens with the last pick in the first round and has turned into the Super Star I saw in person. Funny thing is our General Manager at that type bought into the hype that he would be better suited to play WR or RB rather than QB. Boy what a miss that was. Problem is Sam has the football IQ to be great but needs a surrounding cast which we did not provide and even then he produced with lesser talent.

At least now we have a competent leading man that understand value and talent. He is able to put a value on players while scouting for fit and filling needs. Best Player Available is not in Joe Douglas' wheel house. It is what is said but he has shown the willingness to move around in the draft to get his NEED/guy.

I hope he stays the course . I like this idea of drafting players that fit our schemes instead of just drafting the highest rated player . Sometimes the best move is a trade out .

they have a scale of positions and values of prospects listed that fit the scheme, now the scheme or players are usually flexible that they fit what we can do but also other defensive sets making them versatile. also allowing the organization flexibility if Saleh and crew are replaced.

I wish Sam well. He's a good kid but not being concerned when your team is looking at other QBs just points out his weakness. He hasn't yet and maybe never will master actually seeing what's right in front of him. He has trouble reading defenses and seeing the whole field before him fast enough to make good decisions.
