New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis will retire from football should the team release him following his legal trouble, according to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

A number of NFL executives tell La Canfora that Revis does not want to play for another team on a one-year, “prove it” type of arrangement, and that he has made enough money in his career to leave the game.

Revis is facing four first-felony charges after his reported involvement in an alleged street fight in his native Pittsburgh last weekend, a turn of events that could inspire the Jets to cut him loose when the league year begins, saving around $9 million of cap space.

The veteran returned to the Jets two offseasons ago after signing a landmark five-year contract worth a total of $70 million, with a guarantee of $39 million.

His production since then has suffered a precipitous downturn, after a successful 2015 in which he ranked among the best corners in the game against the pass, in 2016 surrendering among the worst completion rates and passer ratings while receiving criticism concerning his effort and a lack of physical play.

Not so fast. If he is cut and signs with another team, the Jets have written into his contract the right of offset. In other words, the $6 million can be reduced dollar for dollar up to the $6 million by whatever his 2017 salary is with that team. To me that is the best option for the Jets, cut him and he signs some a $6 million deal with say Steelers and we are off the hook. Realistic, who knows but worth considering.

But if he retires, he forfeits the remaining part of his contract, they don't owe him anything and it totally erases that amount from the cap. True, or is that just in baseball?

Typically treated same as if player was cut, except for the following:
"When a player retires, the team has the option to pursue the return of a portion of the signing bonus equal to the unplayed portions of the contract, and that money is no longer counted against the salary cap. This is typically done through an arbitrator. This is known as the "Barry Sanders Rule" because this is exactly how the situation played out in his case, as he was required to pay back a portion of his bonus. The difference between now and then is there was no precedent when Sanders played; now, it's explicitly written into the CBA to allow for this arbitration."
