Darron Lee is a happy OTA camper. The trashcans are gone and his ankle is back.

"It's definitely good to get out there, knock the rust off, whatever rust there might be, and go against someone else, not against trashcans like the past couple of weeks," the second-year linebacker said. "Now we're more of a group and now I know what to expect, I've already done it, I've been through a year."

Lee also said he's spent over half of the offseason "getting the ankle right." Most fans probably didn't know the joint bothered him the second half of last season. Yes, they knew he injured the ankle in Game 6 at Arizona, didn't practice or play for three weeks, then returned for the Rams and played the rest of the season.

His tackle production didn't appear to suffer. He averaged almost six tackles a game before the injury and the same after it. But perhaps his limitation showed up in tackles for loss. After averaging one TFL a game in two seasons at Ohio State, he had 3.5 TFLs total in the first six games and just a half tackle in the last seven.

He certainly didn't alibi the ankle last season, and he wasn't this week. But when asked, he wanted everyone to know that he's feeling good from his rehab.

"The people that are really your support system, they knew what I was dealing with. They knew I was out there on one leg," he told me. "It is what it is. You've got to be out there. I'm not using it as a crutch, but I'm definitely using it as a really good learning experience, now that I really know what to expect. That's why I'm not worried about anything that happened last year. Last year is last year."

Head coach Todd Bowles didn't agree with an assessment that the 2016 first-round pick out of Ohio State had a difficult baptism by NFL fire.

"I thought he played well last year," Bowles said. "He gave up a couple of plays. I don’t think he struggled. I thought he played well as a rookie. I thought he made a mistake or two, here or there, but nothing that he didn’t learn from."

And David Harris saw much the same last year and more and better this season.

"I expect Darron to have a huge leap," Harris said. "I know the game is going to slow down for him. He’s going to start recognizing certain things out there on the field which he may not have seen last year.”

Lee can't wait for the second chapter of the story of "The Old Man and the Lee."

"Now that I'm seeing stuff, now I can really pinpoint the subtle details and how I can pick them up very quickly, just like I picked up the grand scheme pretty quickly. That's exciting for me, and David sees it," Lee said. "And it's also exciting for him, too, what he put in, what he helped in just leading by example.

"I definitely just want to show him that I'm taking that next step to the next level, becoming a better football player and man on and off the field. Just the whole package."

not lee's biggest fan but i was encouraged by this article.. sounds very much like the kid is a real pro & takes his craft very seriously.. I'm forced/happy to respect that..

so now that it seems clear (to me anyway) we have a willing student, it's time for the powers that be to put lee in position to succeed..

crazy talk coming..... perhaps take advantage of his speed as a pass rusher??

It's time for everybody to stop hiding behind, "he needs time to develop". He played like shit last season and anyone with two eyes can plainly see that. He was 100% the wrong player to draft last season. He does not fit in this defense or Toilet doesn't know how to use him? I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I know Lee did nothing to help the Jets win games in 2016. The Jets won only 5 games and Lee was a big reason why.

This defense is exactly what Toilet wanted and they suck worse than at any time under Rex.

He MUST gain about 20 pounds of muscle to do that. He's way too small right now. But assuming he does put o on the necessary weight, will he be able to maintain his speed? It's a good question and it shows just how much of a risky pick Minnie Mouse was to begin with.

i absolutely hear what you're saying with lee but this is on bowles.. i don't believe for a nanosecond lee was told to put on 20+ pounds but refused..

no, my belief is bowles/rogers, in their infinite wisdom don't believe the kid needs to bulk up..

but neither bowles or rogers will be here in '18 anyway, so what to do with lee will be some other regime's issue.. my thoughts anyway..

You're that confident Bowles will get fired after this season? I hope you are right, but honestly how are you coming to that conclusion?

I know we have this discussion before, but you do realize that he weighs about 230 lbs. This is, by the way the same weight (and height also) as Ryan Shazier of Pittsburgh. Shazier and Lee had pretty much the same stats their first year in the pros, and Shazier has improved in his next two and is considered a impact player at ILB. It remains to be seen what will happen with Lee but the physical qualities are there, its just a matter of things clicking mentally. He is a smart kid and seems to understand that the mental part is something that he needs to work on. I don't know how you can be so sure that he won't be any good. Seems to me that there may be a better chance that he turns out as least as good as Shazier because of his intellect (Shazier scored a 20 while Lee scored a 31 on the Wonderlic). I'd like to see this play out before making any bold predictions.

What a loser Darron Lee is. Williams had to manhandle him to stop fighting with the woman. Smh

Hopefully no video surfaces of what Lee was doing or a suspension will no doubt be dished out. Bunch of jokers.

He is so eager that LW had to physically restrain him

Apparently Leo Williams had to restrain Darron Lee after Lee was starting to abuse his girlfriend at a party. Just what this team needs, another domestic volence jerk. Jet GM Mike Maccagnan and his wife are very involved in anti-domestic violence activities (after a neighbor of theirs fatally shot his wife) so doubly bad move on Lee's part. On the other hand thanks to Leo for keeping this from escalating. Problem is, 'who' is Darron Lee as a person and what does this possibly mean down the road...

bowles' contract is up in '18.. so he either gets extended, coaches as a lame duck in '18' or gets fired shortly after this season's end..

like you, i'm fairly convinced the guys a lousy HC & will continue to be just that this season..

he's probably done as soon as black monday.. my thoughts anyway..

Sorry, but this is just a stupid statement. Lee didn't throw 6 INT's in a game. Lee didn't get torched by every WR in the league. He was underwhelming and you might be right that he is a bad draft pick, but to say he is a big reason why the Jets lost 11 games is pretty asinine to me.

Was Jets linebacker Darron Lee physically restrained by teammate defensive end Leonard Williams while going after a woman Saturday night at the Governors Ball Music Festival on Randall’s Island?

That is what appears to take place based on a video posted by Twitter user @gunnerpunner, who filmed the incident and in several tweets offered an eyewitness account of what went down. On the video, a man can be seen shouting at a woman then, according to the Twitter account, went on to “manhandle her’’ and “call her names.’’ Security then stepped in, but later, the man returned and began “dragging’’ the woman.

Williams in the video appears to intercede, first getting in the way of the man from going after the woman then picking up the man and moving him away. While the video is not entirely clear, the man being pulled away appears to be Lee.

“We are aware of the reports,” a Jets spokesman said. “We are taking them seriously, and we are looking into the specifics of the situation. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Williams’ Instagram account showed he attended the festival with teammates, including Lee and quarterback Bryce Petty, and Lee appears to be wearing the same clothes as the man in the videos.

Lee started nine games and played in 13 for the Jets as a rookie last season after being taken in the first round of the draft, 20th overall. The 22-year-old former Ohio State standout had 42 tackles and one sack in his first year.

Williams, also 22, is a rising star for the Jets. As the sixth-overall pick out of USC in the 2015 NFL Draft, Williams has played in all 32 games his first two seasons, starting 31. He had 68 tackles and seven sacks in 2016 and was invited to the Pro Bowl as an alternate.

And how exactly did Lee help the Jets win games in 2016? Please answer that for me. The fact is, he didn't. He was a developmental player that you are hoping for greatness in another two seasons yet?! Talking about willing to let the team get away with whatever it wants and you are always there to stick up for them? CRITICIZE then when they deserve it? Right now? They deserve plenty of criticism. Their attempted competitive rebuild hinged on success from a guy that was very clearly:

1) Way, way, way undersized. You claim he weighs in at 230. That's nonsense and it's inflated by the team. His actual playing weight in his rookie season was about 215 pounds as reported by various football sites. That means he needed to put weight on to even so much as have a prayer of being good.

2) Is a prototypical 4-3 player, NOT a 3-4 player. They are going against the grain and it did NOT work out in their favor in 2016.

3) The ONLY reason why Lee was selected in the first place was because of CHRISTIAN HACKENBERG. Mac wanted Hack so much that he turned down an opportunity to draft Laremy Tunsil because he was unwilling to give up his 2nd rounder. That 2nd rounder turned out to be Hack. So Darron Lee wasn't even the best player for them. They just took him because they wanted to save their compliment of picks.

And honestly, NO I do not think Lee will ever become a good player. I think he sucks and is just another bust in a long list in there history.............

You can believe whatever you'd like, but if Mac had not selected Lee, their 1st rounder would have been Lareny Tunsil. Think to yourself how much better the Jets would have been in 2016 with Laremy Tunsil and no Darron Lee or Christian Hackenberg?

I hope this kid is ready to go. With the Harris cut, they may even lean on him to take the lead with the LBs and overall defense. Williams, him and Adams.
