Denver Broncos plan to keep Emmanuel Sanders

Due to the ever-expanding salary cap and a wave of aggressive young general managers, many league insiders expect this offseason to be marked by an increase in trade activity.

Although the Denver Post recently speculated that veteran wideout Emmanuel Sanders could be one of those dealt in the coming months, that's not general manager John Elway's intention.

"From my understanding, the Broncos do not want to deal him," NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday's edition of NFL Total Access. "He's got a $10 million cap number ... but, remember, they want to lure a big-time free-agent quarterback to the team. This quarterback -- maybe Kirk Cousins, maybe someone else -- needs someone to throw to."

With perennial tease Cody Latimer due to reach free agency, Denver has only spare parts such as Bennie Fowler, Jordan Taylor and unproven 2017 third-round pick Carlos Henderson behind Sanders and Demaryius Thomas on the depth chart.

If Elway expects to reverse course and prevent his franchise from back-to-back losing seasons first time since the early 1970s, jettisoning one of his precious few proven starters on offense isn't the answer.

Once viewed as the NFL's most imposing pass-catching duo, Sanders and Thomas have suffered through injuries and untimely drops while adjusting to subpar quarterback play over the past two years. On the wrong side of age 30, both receivers are nearing the decline phase of their careers -- if they haven't already reached it.

That said, it would surprise no one if a new quarterback leads a rejuvenated aerial attack in 2018.

Problem for Denver is that they have no money to speak of and have the hots for a QB that, at the moment, they can not afford. If they are going to be able to sign Cousins they will have to let some key players go to increase their cap space. Elway will have no choice. So, where does he start ? Who does he move to create enough cap to pay Cousins ? I can hardly wait to see how all this plays out. The one thing in Denver's favor is, in my opinion anyway, that I don't seriously believe all the hype about how much the Jet's will offer Cousins to come here. I don't think they will really sell the farm to get him, but either way Denver may have to part with Sanders if they are serious about signing Cousins even if they don't want to.

they needed to keep Sanders is as close to a possession receiver but then there is rumblings that D. Thomas hasn't played up to his contract, meaning they could be shopping him which would open up cap space for them to make a run at Kirk Cousins while still keeping a formidable asset for Cousins to throw too...

I still believe the Broncos have a better shot to get KC then we do... Just a feeling...

Lack of cap space is just one of Denvers issues. They are are a mess. D.Thomas is going to be a cap casualty, the once stellar D is aging out, over paid and losing their top DB in Talib.
Vance Joseph has the hottest seat in the league and ownership is completely up in the air. They have as many holes as the Jets, and are about to enter a full rebuild in 2018, 19 at the latest.
???????Signing Cousins would be a desperate attempt to try to win at all cost before that window slams shut.

I'm seeing the same picture. Word is that Cousins is doing his due diligence on all of the teams showing interest and that he is looking closely at team structure, ability and money to add supporting players, teams future outlook and all those factors that factor in to fielding a winning team. If this is true and he picks Denver over the Jets we can figure that he isn't as smart as his supporters say or think he is. Jets are rebuilding now and Denver won't start until next year at the soonest. Plus Jets can pay him and build both and Denver can't.

Only way I can honestly see him picking Denver is on a 2 year deal if he believes that they have enough talent left to win an immediate championship. Then his next contract would be much bigger than the estimated $30 per year.
I just don't see it. I keep reading about Denver's 2 great Recievers but Anderson outperformed either one and had as many TDs as both combined last year and Enunwa is in my opinion better than Anderson.
I think it's between the Jets and Vikings, but I don't think it is the right move for Minnesota. Too many key players to pay next year.

The other problem for the Vikings is their salary cap. I know Cousins said it insn't about the money but it's going to be real tough for the vikings to clear enough cap space to pay him any where near what he will want.

They have the money to sign him this season, but too many key players due big $ next season.
Keenum took them pretty close, why mess with the chemestry. It's going to be interesting. Heck, it all ready is!!!

They do have a little over 57 Mil to spend but signing Cousins wouldn't leave them much to work with elsewhere. They could do it but it would make things tight and they might be OK with that. They do have Keenum, as you mentioned, so they just might decide to spend their money on other positions. Like you said interesting.

It just came out on NFL Network that the Vikings are not going to tag Keenum. So either they have quietly already agreed on a deal or they are going to make a run for Cousins. Yep, it's going to be real interesting.

A lot of Questions Shoud be answered by Monday. Teams will be meeting with agents beginning Thursday and the picture should become a whole lot clearer.

You would think so. I think Denver is out because they would have to weaken the support for him in order to afford him, not that it would surprise me to see Elway do that. I think it's going to be either the Jets or the Vikings. The Jets have more money and an improving supporting cast while the Vikings have less money but a win now supporting cast. It's hard to say which way he will go but either way I hope we know soon. If he chooses the Vikings the Jets might go after Keenum. I think I'd be OK with that.

It's going to be interesting. He'd have to take less money or a back loaded deal from the Vikings to allow them to resign their own next season, but That is a much more attractive roster.

If D Thomas is released, I would take a flyer on him. I would also make an offer for Dez Bryant. A change of scenery would probably do well for Dez.
