Devin Smith: Broken Ribs

Damn, that sucks. I was watching Jets talk live today and they showed him in drills. Without pads of course, this guy was fast as lightning,

He will still be fast in 4 weeks. Small setback.
I checked with a Doctor friend

He told me ribs heal and ribs, when healed, never have any affect on footspeed.

I noticed that two other Jet former draft picks, Milliner and McDougle, written off by some local experts as injury prone failures are still in the mix and will be on the practice field in pads today

It just sucks he is missing reps, and a chance to show his ability

Not happy about it, but at least with ribs they heal on their own and once healed no lingering affects. If he had to have an injury I prefer that to a lingering hamstring. Hopefully he will be back in time for late pre-season.

He has a 4-6 week timetable and is iffy for the opener. Just got that notification on my phone.

Well, I've broken my ribs in the past and at least when they were broken, it hurt like hell to run.

Just spoke to someone close to Devin Smith, says he's in good spirits, keeping head up and remaining positive. Focus right now is rest. #NYJ

This is why I made such a big deal about him skipping out on ALL of mini camp. For rookies every rep is essential and every missed rep is a setback, be it OTA's, mini camp or training camp. Now he will likely miss all of the latter (training camp), after missing all of the former (mini camp). Missing training camp would have been a big setback even if he participated in mini camp, but the setback is exacerbated now that he's missing both. Now his preparation for pro ball will be limited to a few early OTA's, the equivalent of an orientation, and some book/film study.

Hopefully he can pull an Odell Beckham when he returns from injury and hit the ground running, but I'm not optimistic, Beckham was a bit of an aberration, an exception to the rule. Ordinarily when a young WR misses this much preparation time in advance of his rookie season, you're lucky if he becomes a major contributor at any point in the regular season and it doesn't turn into a quasi red-shirt year.

As much as I thought Devin Smith and Jeremy Kerley would be an interesting camp competition for playing time in the slot, this is now all Kerley. I thought Smith was good enough to steal the position altogether quite possibly.

This really is a major setback. By the time he's cleared to play he'll be way behind. This is starting to resemble Dee Milliner in his rookie year, Due to so many setbacks, by the time he started playing he was way behind and it showed on the field. He never really caught up until the last 4 weeks of his rookie year. Hope it doesn't go that way with Smith.

Guys, here's what I posted yesterday in the training camp thread when the story first broke:

Admitted in the hospital usually means they are concerned about a punctured lung. Not trying to scare anyone, but I did some boxing in my youth and thats the primary concern with broken ribs. Its not a good sign that they are keeping him overnight. Hairline fracture and they probably send him home. Or maybe I'm wrong, maybe they are just being cautious, I'm talking about my experience from 30+ years ago, could be a totally different protocol now.

So is it A rib or MANY ribs? Because obviously with the number of ribs broken the recovery becomes more arduous and involved, much more serious.
