Did Macc get outmaneuvered in this draft?

Fair question and is a little concerning.

Round 2: Houston jumps us to take Center/OG Nick Martin (a position of great need for Jets). We may have been targeting Hack all along there but the fact is Houston jumped one spot ahead of us for Martin.

Round 4: Rams jump us to take slot receiver Pharoh Cooper. This kid is tough, great work ethic, leader, and comes from a family of marines. Kind of character and talent that MacBowles loves. We settle for CB Justin Burris, who most had around a 6th round grade.

When your teams gets jumped TWICE in the same draft, and the team doing the jumping takes a player that you are known to like and/or plays a position of need, it doesn't look good.

What's Macc supposed to do? Predict that someone will jump him and make a panic move up to prevent it? I don't think he wanted Pharoh or Martin. I think he let the draft come to them and took exactly who they planned on taking all along.

Yes Houston jumped in front to take Nick Martin but they were in deed targeting Hackenberg...

as for the 4th round the Bears traded up with the Rams which then the Rams fell back in front of the Jets to take Cooper...

Jets were looking to go corner in the 4th round, they were hoping Tavon Young fell to them the next corner they had on their big board who might of went in the 5th was Burris... And yes I did have a 6th round grade on him but also had a 5th round grade on Tavon Young...

+1

While he may have wanted the players taken before them, it's illogical to think he'd react by going off the rails and making "panic" selections like a polarizing QB or a 6th round CB. He'd simply take whoever he felt was the next best option on his list. So using that logic, the players he took WERE the next best option (or perhaps rated higher than the ones taken before them anyway).

Only time will tell if he's right, but let's not treat Macc like an armchair GM trolling the interwebz for advice . . .

You need to edit the post as pointed out; the rams fell back to that spot in an earlier trade to Chicago. So not much here.

btw the Jets tried to trade down from 51, & 118 to stock pile pix but no one was interested to move into the Jets spot to take certain prospects... that being said could now understand why the Jets took both Hackenberg & Burris at those selections whom both were ranked lower than taken...

with only six picks the front office had to take the prospects they were targeting at said picks...

I understand your logic, but it implies they didn't have anyone ranked AT (or above) those locations in the draft. If Macc is truly "BPA", then why not take someone "worthy" of the selection instead of reaching for lower value?

I love this draft, A+ all around. Even the Hackenburg pick that I initially HATED but he's growing on me also. Great job Mac and TB.

Point, I respect your opinion but I feel like you were harsh on the management this year. We need to play it all out. We can't really criticize the moves until they play a down and we see where they fit schematically.

Actually I give Mac credit, he really wanted Shell in the 5th round but had no pick. Realizing we are getting 3 compensatory picks in 2017, he traded a 2017 4th rounder for a player that provides much needed immediate depth on our offensive line, and a possible future starter at RT.

100%. If this kid pans out, he's worth more than a 4rth rounder.

That's fair. Sometimes when I try to make my point, in debate, it comes off as a little more passionate than how I actually feel. I am a fan of this regime. I praised Macc's acquisitions of Marshall and Fitz last year. I even loved the Zac Stacey signing. I also think the Ryan Clady move was fantastic.

Where Macc has me concerned, and I think this is legitimate, is his handling of the draft. (Devin Smith, the logjam at DE a full year later seems mishandled, Darron Lee's fit in a 3-4, Hackenberg's obvious lack of accuracy and the failure rate of those guys in the NFL, trading a 4th to get a 5th, I'm sorry but you never mortgage higher assets for lesser ones. It's a recipe for fail. Those things I don't like.

But the big picture shows a franchise moving in the right direction. My prediction (for the record) is we are drafting very high next year. Will be interesting if we end up giving a long look at Deshaun Watson or Kaaya. I'm still not convinced we have our QB of the future on this roster.

MY thoughts.....and my NOstradamus look into the careers of our picks

Lee, Jenkins and Burris - One of these guys will be a very good player, One willbe above average and one will be close to a pro bowler

Hackenberg - this gus is either gonna be the next Kerry Collins some bad years, some great years and some so-so years never being the franchise guy. or he will be a franchise guy

Shell - Above Average 10 year player

Edwards - gets beat out by Hacket in training Camp

Peake - I love the pick but my gut says he won't pan out. He'll be a PS player this year cut next

As far as Mac's draft. I like the players he chose in the spots they went at. Including Hackenberg

While obviously not the ideal we're all praying for, I would sign up for this in a heartbeat. In fact, it sounds like you're describing Eli Manning as well -- a QB who is MADDENINGLY inconsistent, yet goes home to a wife, kids and 2 SB rings every night . . .

I am high on Petty I think Petty will be the one to emerge as the franchise guy for us. But I am intrigued by Hackenberg, I have been since his freshman year. It was evident once O'Brien left Penn St the kid digressed It was evident he wasn't coached up, the system around him was poor and the talent was terrible especially the Oline.... Gailey knows how to contour his playbook to fit his QB... The talent level on the Jets with Marshall, Forte,Powell, Decker, Amaro (Hopefully) along with Mangold, Clady, don't sleep on Winter and the rest of the OL... I think Qvale can't be worse than Breno and who knows what Shell might bring to the table

Rd 2-#48 the Packers jumped up to get OT Jason Spriggs.
At about the same time CHI was making the same move for the same player, only jumping back down from Rd2-#41 to Rd2-#49 with BUF, and getting an extra 4th in 2016 AND 2017 in the process.

When GB took the guy they were targeting, (Spriggs), they immediately traded right back out of #49 with SEA & picked up another 2016 Rd 4 pick.
They settled for OG Cody Whitehair - which wasn't such a bad thing - later in Rd 2, but Spriggs was the guy they were really after.

BUF got Ragland, but it cost them a pair of 4th round picks extra & SEA got the DT they were looking for, so everybody sorta won on this pair of trades.

Sometimes you just get out-GMed, and then you have to make the best of it.
CHI was lucky they were able to get back out of #49 and get an extra pick to boot, which HYATT™ is sure was something of a consolation, but they really wanted Spriggs and didn't get him.
