Do any of last year's FA OL take a step forward this year?

The Jets attacked the offensive line last season with the look of a team that understood that they needed to be better up front. The problem is that their approach was more quantity over quality. Now, they will enter the 2020 offseason in a similar boat except for the solace that comes with Mekhi Becton looking a lot like a franchise left tackle.

Left guard Alex Lewis recorded a pass-blocking grade of 55.6 before his season came to an end following Week 11. Pat Elflein fared even worse in the following weeks, recording a 33.9 pass-blocking grade across six starts at left guard.

Similarly, Connor McGovern’s respectable PFF grade rank was driven largely by his run blocking. His 42.7 pass-blocking grade on the season was one of the worst marks at the center position, but he did come on as the season progressed. Greg Van Roten led the interior offensive linemen with a 71.5 pass-blocking grade at right guard.

Lastly, George Fant required some projection heading into the 2020 season as a starting tackle after playing more snaps as a sixth offensive lineman in the 2018 and 2019 seasons than he did at tackle. He ended the year with a PFF grade of 60.7 at right tackle, ranking 29th out of 38 qualifiers at the position. His release could free up over $7 million this offseason.

The tricky thing for New York is that it’s hard to see things getting a whole lot better for guys like McGovern, Van Roten and Fant. All appear to be what they are at this point — players capable of starting but not options you’re particularly excited about. Outside of Becton, the Jets should be looking to upgrade all four positions along the offensive line in the coming years.

I am sure these guys are nice guys. We need to get better on the OL. Draft and or FA, whoever is the QB and whoever is getting te touches at RB - we need better OL.

I keep reading that Fant should benefit from the switch in offensive schemes. If so, will it be enough for him to be a long term solution at RT? Douglas clearly need to hit on another rookie or two in this year's draft along the OL.

heard Fant worked all season with Becton then the game plan was putting power guard next to Becton to be able to utilize both athleticism ad power at LT... might of been the right way to have Mekhi able to compete day one...

Fant is an older player so drafting someone to develop is the smarter play...

At 28, Fant isn't that old for an OT. The bigger question obviously is whether he's good enough.

he is under contract for two more years albeit one year with any guaranteed money but rebuilding through the draft is Joe Douglas' game plan... any free agent signings (veteran above the age of 26) would be considered short term fixes...

players that are drafted and their rookie contracts expire at 26 years old can be considered a long term answer after the team has created their identity which we have not...

new coaching staff awesome, have 5 core players and 7 potentials, we need more... we need at least 32 total potential/core players to even attempt to entertain those type of signings because those signings are players that are seeking a team that has potential to win...

You're singing to the choir; perhaps I misspoke about 'long term answer' as it related to Fant. I do think though that he'll be serviceable for a couple of years while draftee(s) develop. If a draftee beats him out all the better, then we have a good swing tackle as depth.

scouts for the team have listed these three tackles as potential selections

Leatherwood can play RT or LT
Jalen Mayfield RT
Dillon Radunz RT or LT
Radunz ran a 5.11 second 40-yard dash as well as a 4.53 second short shuttle and a 7.27 3-cone drill. He also threw up 24 repetitions on the bench press and posted a 9-feet, 4-inch broad jump and 32-inch vertical jump

three more pro days that have potential RT prospects

depending on how the new coaching staff perceives the talent on the roster will tell how they will draft...
