Dolphins disaster brings Todd Bowles to his defining moment

The Jets suffered a crushing 31-28 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:

1. The Jets have preached team chemistry and how close this team is since the spring. Now, we will get to see it. Sunday’s loss was the kind that can rip apart a team. There could be finger-pointing and locker-room arguments. The Jets have lost two tough games in a row. Can they stay together?
It is on coach Todd Bowles to navigate these choppy waters. He did in 2015, when the Jets were at 5-5 and then won five in a row, but he could not pull last year’s team together.

Bowles also has to lean on his veteran leaders. The Jets are a young team, but they have a good number of veterans in the locker room who should be able to keep the team together. After Sunday’s game, the media was waiting in an interview room adjacent to the locker room. You could hear Muhammad Wilkerson screaming through the wall. He was not calling out teammates, but imploring them to look themselves in the mirror and figure out what type of team they want this to be.

The Jets have three games left before their bye – at home against the Falcons, at home on a Thursday night against the Bills and at the Buccaneers. This feels like the defining stretch of the Jets season. Will they be in position to make some noise in December, or will they fall apart right now, making their early-season success feel like nothing but a mirage?

2. Speaking of Wilkerson, he played his best game of the season Sunday. He was very active in the game. He had four tackles, one quarterback hit, a pass defensed and an interception. His most impressive play did not show up on the stat sheet, though. He chased down Jay Ajayi on a screen pass about 10 yards downfield to help make the tackle. Any questions about Wilkerson’s effort were answered with that play.

Wilkerson is still dealing with shoulder and toe injuries. He has not practiced over the past two weeks and needs pain-killing shots for both injuries to play.
Wilkerson still does not have a sack, but he made his impact felt in other ways Sunday.

3. Bowles stressed after the game that the Jets have to learn how to finish and have a killer instinct. There is no greater evidence that this is true than their fourth-quarter scoring differential. The Jets have been outscored 67-17 in the final quarter.

The fourth-quarter issue really showed itself when they played the Jaguars in Week 4, but it did not get much attention because the Jets held on to win in overtime. Jacksonville scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to erase the Jets’ lead in that game. This week, the Dolphins scored 17 in the fourth quarter to wipe out a 14-point Jets lead. The Jets have gone scoreless in the fourth quarter in four of their seven games.

It is hard to pinpoint what is happening. A few players mentioned the team can’t get complacent late in games. Is it that? Are they running out of gas? On Sunday, the defense looked tired in the fourth quarter. Are teams adjusting to what they are doing early? The Jets offense was rolling in the first half, but the Dolphins held them to minus-4 yards in the fourth quarter.

Whatever it is, the Jets have to figure it out or they will struggle to win games.

4. The other issue killing the Jets is penalties. They had 12 on Sunday. The Jets have been flagged 67 times this season with 57 accepted. Both are the second most in the NFL. The Jets had been the least-penalized team in the league over Bowles’ first two seasons.

Bowles has emphasized cutting down on penalties. They list players who make penalties on a big board each week, study the plays and have referees in practice to help them with calls. Nothing is working this year. Right now, the Jets look undisciplined, which reflects poorly on Bowles.

Marcus Maye returns an interception.APTelling stat: Jumping off the penalties, the Dolphins had six first downs as the result of Jets penalties on Sunday. They only had three rushing first downs. This season, Jets opponents have gotten 25 first downs off of penalties. By comparison, the Jets have gotten 11 first downs off of flags.

Surprising snap count: Juston Burris played zero snaps for the second straight week. It is strange how Burris went from the Jets’ third cornerback, playing in all sub packages, to having no role at all. I’m not sure if it can be done in-season or if he has the skill-set to do it, but the Jets should consider training him to play slot corner as an alternative to Buster Skrine.

Game ball: It was an ugly loss for the Jets, but the biggest positive was the play of their rookie safeties. Marcus Maye had seven tackles, a pass defensed and an interception. Jamal Adams had six tackles, one sack, two tackles for a loss, one quarterback hit and a pass defensed that resulted in an interception for a teammate.

Honestly, I thought this article was a referendum on Toilets viability as a HC going forward? But it seems none of you hacks actually give a shit.

If the season ended today, I would shit can Toilet. Toilet does not know how to play chess. If you can't play chess, you have no business being a HC.

Hey! I just got home. We're not allowed to be on the Internet at work.
Good summary. Last season Bowles preached discipline and IIRC, the Jets were very low in terms of being penalized last year. But that seems to have gone out the window to the point they've committed the second MOST in the league. Now, maybe its because many of the veterans have been replaced with young players. But they can't keep shooting themselves in the foot. Will improvement come with maturity? I hope we find out quickly, as the kids get extended playing time.

LOL. relax.

We are all recovering from the horrible two losses in a row. I agree, i would can Bowles too but it may not be an easy decision. Yes, he has the team playing extremely hard. Before the season began we did not think we'd be any good but we are actually competing with playoff teams.

Now what pisses me off about Bowles is that after our good starts we do nothing. My guess is that he can't make adjustments or respond to the adjustments that the opposition makes. McCown's first half vs second half numbers are staggering and I think that shows more on the coach than McCown.

Wow, this is so true. I owe my some of my playing and coaching success to my knowledge of the game of chess going back to age 10. Long term and short term tactical positioning of players, moves and counter moves, decoy. Chess has everything football has and vice versa. Chess should be a pre-requisite for all coaches...well maybe just jet coaches...Not sure Bowles is a chess player, but based on what I've seen from him so far, I'm starting to believe he is not.

That veneer he wears on his face on the sideline, that of a man who is cool-calm-collected, that of a wise hand shrewdly pondering his next move - is a false front. It is a mask covering the real face he should be presenting: that of a deer in the headlights.

I spend Sundays in a local sports pub, down in central Florida, surrounded by a couple dozen Jets fans who basically take over the joint at 1:00pm. A standing joke has developed among this crew: "Hey, look! I think Bowles just showed some emotion! I think he might have just had an original thought! Wow, he really looks furious over that last penalty! Watch for his next strategic move, that other team is in real trouble now!"

I really do think it's a veneer. He is as lost and outclassed as I've ever seen a HC be.

There is nothing the Jets could do that would convince some to keep Bowles. They have already made up their minds, and everything is viewed through that lens.

It's basically the same as drawing your conclusions, and then seeking evidence to support it. It's not how research is done.

the jets have consistently competed this season in the 1st 3 quarters, only to get their doors blown off in the 4th..

that's not on the HC??

I'm not sure "Toilet" is the one who fumbled a punt today, or who threw a pick against the Dolphins.

"toilet??" you got the wrong poster with that stuff..

that & this is my 1st post of today.. what does my post friday have to do with today's game??

now as far as the pick last week, if you want to give bowles a pass for allowing a throw to the sideline in that spot, with 3 timeouts?? fine.. i don't.. he's the HC & it's his responsibility to let it be known that pass should never have been attempted.. period.. if bowles had no idea what the hell the play call was, then shame the **** on him!!

You can make a better argument about the pick being tied to coaching, yes. So should that fall on both the HC and the OC? The DC gets his share of abuse here.

In the loss to Atlanta I would have gone for it on 4th down with about 3 minutes left. What did we have to lose. How has it worked out for this team to constantly punt with so little time left. Have the Jets ever gotten the ball back with enough time to do anything??....

I see glimpses of change this year but Bowles coaching is still way too conservative for my taste.

he is not but has the team improved in the last three weeks? I don't thin so. They have not improved, they continue to implode in critical times making critical mistakes. If I am not mistaken they stated the JETS are 1st in penalty yardage in the NFL and that is squarely coaching.

It's one thing to get beat physically and out executed by a better team... but when you continue to make the same type of mistakes week after week then its coaching or dumb players or both.

One final point, I don't give a rats ass about Macs 70 % completion rate, we re 3-5 and I rather lose with Petty then to watch Fitz 2.0 the rest of the year. Just my O.
