For a Christmas gift last year I reveived the complete illustrative history of the NY Jets. J finally got a chance to skim through it. I am still upset about Doug Brien. Started getting heated when I saw this pic lol.

Yeah, but we were paid back a few years later in SanDiego. How many chips did their kicker miss in that game? I think it was 3 total, 2 chip shots. And he was one of the best kickers in the league. At least Brien stunk all the time

You should have been more upset at the offense for not scoring a point..:dancing-poop:

As easy as it is to blame Brien for that one, the entire offense is equally to blame. We could not move the ball all game. We got a PR TD from Moss and a pick 6 from Reggie Tongue to even be in the game.

Ultimately, I put the blame for the way this one ended on Herm. Brien misses a 47 yard FG. Barrett gets a pick of Big Ben on the next play. We pick up one first, and then Herm is content to play for another 40+ yard FG. Put your kicker right out in the same spot where he just missed a kick minutes earlier. In a stadium that is know for being one of the toughest places to kick. He didn't exactly set his kicker up to succeed.

Still, Brien has to make at least one of those two kicks. He shares the blame, but its not solely on him.

Herm Kotite actually had Chad take a knee on third down to move the eventual FG attempt 2 to 3 yards back

Lucky us

Now we don't even need Herm...

We have Geno to run backwards and take us out of FG position altogether

Herm went ultra-conservative in that game for sure. He was afraid to take chances on offense, and that definitely played a part in the Jets losing. Brien was only part of the problem. That was one of the more painful losses I've ever endured.

Yeah the back to back missed kicks, tough to swallow, in the end though the blame falls squarely on Herm.

It's so weird how that kicker, name doesn't ring a bell at the moment, was crap for us but played real well with the Bengals

Mike Nugent. What a draft. Pretty sure that was also the year we traded a first for Doug Jolley. Every mock I read had us taking Heath Miller, but instead we trade our first for Jolley.

Edit: Just looked it up. That was the year we traded for Jolley. In the Jolley trade we got back Oakland's 2nd which is the pick we used to take Nugent. What a trade. Salvaged the draft though with guys like Sione Pouha, Justin Miller and Kerry Rhodes with later picks.

Wow, what an awful awful first half of the draft. Not sure why anyone thought that Doug Jolley was worth a first

I argee. Herm actually had Pennington in the "victory" formation at about the 23 yard line. He could have ran a few plays to get closer. It was not a "chip" field goal attempt by any imagination.

I'll never forget the day after that 2004 playoff loss against the Steelers someone was auctioning off Doug Brien on EBay.....

The starting bid was 1 cent. It went on to say.....

P.S. We'll throw in Paul Hackett for FREE. :)
