the 1st round versus undrafted free agent agrument is completely irrelevant to Belichek(and Parcells for that matter) - the question is whether Belichek would have recognized the flaw(s) in Wilkerson's character that apparently McCagnan et al did not or overlooked or just did the politically correct move and gave Wilkerson the ENORMOUS K. I bet under Belichek Wilkerson does get the K

King Belichick and Co. have been wrong many times. Especially during the draft. The Patriots have whiffed on a lot of draft picks since he’s been there.

It’s a hypothetical that cannot be definitively answered. You’ve got a 1st round pick coming off a good year, and due for a big extension, versus an UFA playing a position that is not the same as Wilkerson. Some teams put DE’s at a higher premium than purely run stuffing big bodies at DT.

We can all agree now that Snacks would’ve been the better choice, but at the time of the decision, most would’ve said “absolutely you extend Wilkerson..are you f’ing kidding me?”

(Except for the handful of fans who knew all along!)

One has to place at least some of the blame for the Harrison & Wilkerson debacle squarely on Bowles & McCagnan - admittedly - Wilkerson did seem to just completely dog it, but it is hard to believe there was not some evidence of same(i.e. the practice field, locker room etc.) - I know Wilkerson had a reputation coming into the league for a sometimes inconsistent motor - regardless, they(the GM & Coach)were closely around him so that one has to question their judgement - although all in fairness to Bowles - he did rave about Harrison and exhorted his resigning - what he said to McCagnan about Wilkerson at the time is not known - ultimately, it was probably McCagnan's call.

Again 20/20 hindsight - and I recognize Wilkerson and Harrison had at the time posessed different attributes - BUT McCagnan is paid and paid well to make the right call.........one wonders - if Pittsburgh or the Pats would have gotten it wrong?

It's 100% on Mac. Unless Woody was adamant about retaining Mo.
His issues go back to Rex Ryan's days and Mac was completely aware of the issues before he arrived and in his first year.
Most fans were fine with Snacks walking at that time , their argument was you don't pay a 2 down player. Truth is, Mo was the dominant player that he was because of Snacks.

That’s a good point, Tony. I agree that Snacks made Mo better. No doubt about it.

last point on this matter: the nuanced issue is - did the JETS brass miss a character flaw(s) in Wilkerson that they SHOULD have seen or recognize so as to not give him an exorbitant contract(after which he almost immediately dogged it)! I am merely suggesting it seems possible they did, and that it ts also more likely then not - based on history - Belichek would not of.

They were well aware of Mo's issues. They "spoke" with him regarding his tardiness and issues prior to extending him.
That's why I questioned whether Woody was the driving force behind the new contract as he was with Revis and Fitzpatrick.

I'd like to think they are still hammering out the details. To me, this is a much better idea than Suh would have been. It's an ideal fit.

Of course, no way of knowing exactly, but I suspect Hankins' is looking for twice the amount of guaranteed money(as in one similar to his recent COLTS deal) then that being presently offered by Jets and the NFL market place - he MAY be deciding at this point whether to take a deal or to wait until training camp starts so as to see if his contract leverage improves because of injuries.

What ever happened with Hankins? Not sure what he's asking for but he would fill a hole in our DL and allow Mac to draft the BPA. Not suggesting he just sign bodies to fill in the blanks but it seems Hankins is a good fit.

Sounds like a good fit, fills a need, and $8 mil is not unreasonable. Besides we have the cap space, so I hope it happens.

Mike Maccagnan has a price for every player out there and $8 Million per season is NOT his... From what I learned the Jets offered him a 2 year $9 M deal with some incentives but not much to improve the annual to what he is seeking...

Also what I heard this offer is the best that he received so no reason to improve it either when he gets nothing else he will either sit out year, retire or sign with us... Maybe GM MM could make it a 1 year deal for $5 M but doubt he will bend... Even tho we have that need...

Thanks, didn't know the details of what offers were out there.

He ranked 3rd in the NFL as a run stuffer behind Snacks and Suh."

Your earlier post - not sure that is average.

last season he was seeking $10 M per season settled on a 3 year deal $27 M with the Colts after one season they release him, why?

now he is seeking almost the same money, but believe his attitude/locker room is why they walked away from him (the Colts)...

we have a good locker room, we have solid talent and will or should be able to fill some voids in depth... maybe we get lucky and get a veteran on a 1 yr deal, possibly Rucker or someone else...

couple names to keep an eye on:

NT Montari Hughes
DT Jay Bromley

after the draft...

Still the door is open for DE Benson Mayowa

Personally I would love to see a flier on someone like Pat Sims or Tony McDaniel even Alan Branch could give some potential to allow Leo to be more productive... Thats just me and they would all come about the same price $4 M ish for one year...

Hankins is proven against the run. His pass rush seems to have peaked one particular season, and I’m wondering why Indy is cutting bait one year into a 3 year deal. That could be a red flag.

Not opposed to signing him, but if his agent is trying to squeeze the Jets financially based on that 7 sack season, I’d pass.
