Jets CB Brandin Echols on the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week in Week 15.

Echols (6-1, 202) had 3 pass defenses and a pick-six, his first career interception, against the Dolphins last Sunday. He led all NFL cornerbacks with a 93.3 coverage grade in Week 15 according to Pro Football Focus, and fifth overall with an 84.2 overall grade. The Kentucky product has started all 11 games he's played in -- he missed three games with a quad injury -- ranks second on the team with 7 PDs with his 49 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. His 542 snaps ranks eighth on the defense.

"I'm glad [the injury] happened because I could sit back and reflect on myself as a person and see what I needed to work on and be done," Echols said. "I really think me getting sidelined was a good thing." He added: "I feel like I've grown a lot, especially with confidence. I'll speak for all the other [Jets] rookies – just the confidence to get better every week going against different teams and not going out there panicking."

Echols' pick helped tie the game at 24 in the fourth quarter. He picked off Tua Tagovailoa's pass intended for TE Hunter Long and returned it 20 yards for the score.

"It was good team communication across the board," Echols said. "I want to give credit to Michael Carter II. He called out a play and I trusted it, so he led me to get my first interception. ... It felt good, but I also knew we had more work to go out and do. Even though I got the interception, my focus was to get back on the field and try and make another play."

This marks the third time a rookie on the Green & White has won the award this season (QB Zach Wilson has won the other two).

"I always challenge [the CBs] that they got to get the ball," HC Robert Saleh said earlier this week. "That's the next step that group has got to take and we did get the pick-six, which was awesome. But that's the next step. Can we go get the football? It's really cool to see them getting their PBUs and playing sticky coverage in man. When we get more rush from the outside and the rush and coverage starts tying in together, it can become a bit special. They've developed really nicely and they've proven that they're NFL players. Now the next step for them is to prove that they're NFL difference makers and you do that by taking the ball, which we did [Sunday]."

seems to me the plan for the secondary is starting to pan out. Can't ask for much more out of the CB group as a whole........2 rookies and a second year guy are blossoming into legit starters. Now beyond Echols, Carter, and Hall there are plenty of question marks amongst the DBs but what has to get you excited is the Jets can direct impact draft picks and FA money to other more needy groups. This one has some rather cheaply.

Isaiah Dunn, Javelin Guidry are also two good players that have a role on the team... beyond those two Rachad Wildgoose has shown some flashes could develop only 21 years old, potential nothing guaranteed... But concerns over Jason Pinnock are starting to build...

but concerns are mild - we can't impact from every draft pick/FA/scrap heap guy.....there are going to be misses and you move on quickly. Where I am at with the DBs is next year you grade tougher once you have established starters -you have a new bar and guys like Guidry and Dunn are then vulnerable to the next wave of new guys that might leapfrog. The hope of course is they evolve/improve and give the Jets a deeper secondary.

listen I had my concerns when they drafted him(Jason Pinnock), he has done everything I stated then...

Javelin Guidry is fast, hard hitting and never puts the brakes on his motor... He has survived this past wave this year being he is in his second year and he is only getting better he won't be going anywhere unless it is a change of position which I doubt because the team likes the flexibility he brings to the nickel position...

As for Dunn, there is something about him that gives the secondary sustainability meaning if someone goes down he will be that role guy to spot start... He is not going to wow, but has the speed, closing burst and cover skills to be a solid rotational guy and that is why he is here and will be here moving forward...

Like I said countless times they are not the flashiest group, not high picks nor are going to garner accolades as individuals but a group is what we need and they are close to having that at least at the corner position...

Bryce Hall in his second year has become literally our best corner in years... Brandin Echols has the ceiling to surpass that and become the new number one next year with a dominate off season program... Remember after the draft during off season workouts I stated that if they chose to keep one of Echols or Pinnock it would be Echols because he has that football IQ acumen that defensive coaches drive for in their corners... Not only did he elevate himself up the depth chart he succeeded in a way by knocking Bless Austin out of New York and off the roster... I follow a lot of players but tend to see through the bull shit, a lot of Jets fans miss read the connection between Jason Pinnock and former Jet Darrelle Revis... Idolizing someone doesn't mean you are related...

His game at Pittsburgh was good, not great they played a lot off than man coverage and his man skills allowed him to take advantage of his ball hawking skill set but when they played bump n run and it was rarely he would get blown off the line and did not have the speed to recover at this level it works for a player in zone, but even then he one can not close or take the right pursuit angles they are vulnerable in coverage...

Michael Carter II, Javelin Guidry give us stability inside, now moving forward they need to focus on depth behind the starting outside corners and right now Isaiah Dunn leads as one of those options...

The real problem is at safety but not with Ashtyn Davis... Elijah Riley has potential, but where is the depth? Zane Lewis maybe? but that is only one...

Get this defense a Zero and some coverage linebackers who can tackle and it’s fixed . Somehow throw in an edge rusher who can get to the QB and still set the edge and it becomes Elite .

need a compliment to Quinnen on the inside and the D Line is fixed
maybe a Perrion Winfrey from OU even Haskell Garrett from OSU
also need to figure out this CJ Mosley fit
Quincy Williams as the MIKE moving forward
if they move on from CJ then a Christian Harris or Damone Clark would be optimal replacements
as for our two rookies this year both could split time on one side, just a feeling
if the Jets want to double down the MIKE with Quincy Williams maybe a Lakia Henry from Ole Miss would suffice same height size and bullet type player

a couple other linebacker names to pay attention for is NC State Payton Wilson and Florida's Ventril Miller...

this draft the linebacker class is loaded not to mention a ton of tweener types from safety to linebacker as well...
