Ed Oliver?

i've seen a couple of reports that the jets, and especially gregg williams, are very interested in ed oliver. i'm sure this place will go nuts if the jets took oliver at 3, meaning they passed on (at least) one of q. williams, allen, bosa and/or trading down.

not sure i see the fit given the jets existing personnel. of course, it could be a smokescreen or someone they could target should they trade down.

just something to keep an eye on (and prepare the masses should they take him at 3)

Ed Oliver - DT

School: Houston | Year: Junior

Gregg Williams coached Aaron Donald during his time as Rams DC and could easily find a way to utilize Oliver in the Big Apple.

I don't believe the Jets would take Ed Oliver with Quinnen Williams still on the board. I've always believed Q is the best player in the draft and I'm pretty sure the Jets do too, so they probably see Q going 1 or 2 to Arizona or SF.

If the Cards pass on Murray (still a distinct possibility) the Jets probably see Q and Bosa or Bosa and Q going 1 and 2, at which point they will have to decide between Oliver and Allen. If that happens, I can see the Jets grading Oliver higher than Allen. I myself was not very familiar with Oliver because Houston is rarely on TV on the east coast, but I have to admit his highlight videos are eye-popping.

That said, I agree that Oliver seems like an awful fit in a base 3-4, but if thats a smokescreen and we switch to a 4-3, Oliver is not a bad pick.

You stick this kid in a 4-3 and he definitely has a chance to be great.

TOP 5 Regardless of Scheme and Needs:

1. Quinnen Williams
2. Nick Bosa
3. Ed Oliver
4. Josh Allen
5. Montez Sweat

But it's entirely possible some GM's have Oliver ahead of Bosa or Sweat ahead of Allen.

These are all close calls in my view. The only thing thats not close, as I see it, is that Q is the best player in the draft.

Oliver’s name has been popping up a lot in recent weeks among the mock people. Like Sweat, he gets a little overshadowed because of the top names (Bosa, Q, and Allen). But there’s no denying he’s an active, disruptive player. Would Gregg Williams play this guy at nose tackle despite not having ideal size for the position?

As Thursday gets closer, the buzz gets louder and the rumors are starting to fly.

another mock with oliver to the jets. per king, the jets do not love allen. smokescreen???

[h=3]3. New York Jets: Ed Oliver, DT, Houston[/h]
Imagine Josh McDaniels, Chad O’Shea and Brian Daboll—the offensive brains of the AFC East—designing protections to keep Leonard Williams and Oliver from wrecking games over the next three or four years. I realize that with new coordinator Gregg Williams staying with a 3-4 defense that this isn’t the perfect fit for Oliver, but Williams once bragged about being able to play 42 different defenses with his scheme, and he’d figure out how to make Oliver work. For a long time, I’d penciled in Josh Allen here because of the Jets’ edge-rusher need, but when you do a mock, you go by your gut. And someone I trust told me the Jets don’t love Allen. So those are the kinds of scale-tippers that change the board—and, most often, make me look like a dope Thursday night about 8:45 ET. We shall see. Oh, and the Jets would like to trade down too, if they can get a ransom. I don’t see it.

I was listening to Gil Brandt on NFL channel - Sirius, he said that if the choice is between an impact interior defender and an impact outside defender, go with the impact interior guy because he is closer to the ball and will make more plays than the exterior guy. Sounds pretty simplistic, but makes way too much sense particularly when dealing with Brady twice a year who has few issues with outside pressure. Leo and Williams/Oliver would be pretty effective IMHO.

I'm not convinced that Oliver would be an impact player that the Jets need. ER and OL are more of a need. If we cannot trade down, then we have a problem.

He was originally very highly ranked, then he fell back to the middle of the first, and now he's back up again. He's quick for sure. He's undersized. I really don't know what to make of him. He strikes me a tweeter type - like Aaron Donald, but Aaron Donald is a pretty rare talent. It would be an unconventional pick. I guess it depends who is on the board. It sounds like the Jets really want to get out of this spot and move down and pick up a second at least. If they are not 100% all in on a player, then they should move back.

Correct LI, but also we may view several players as close enough in talent/value to warrant moving back. If Macc and Co. view Allen and Oliver (just as an example) in roughly the same grade, then moving back is a no brainer. The same could be said for any comparable players. If it’s a matter of percentage points separating players, you have options.

Of course, by moving back you do run the risk of losing a player you were targeting. Always a downside to any decision.

Oliver has been breaking toward the Jets for the past day or two. Is this just draft week smokescreening?

If it is sincere, I do not get it, at least not at #3.

Oliver has been rising in the top 10 recently. I’ve seen him talked about as a top 5 pick by some. Charles Davis (NFLN) loves him. So value is a little off but my concern is scheme fit. I get that he’s a disrupter, but is he big enough to play Nose? If Gregg Williams is really playing multiple defensive fronts, then I sort of get it. But he would not be ahead of Q. Williams for me. No way.

We need a pass rusher period. Our CB's are pretty bad so we better have someone that can get to the QB.

Ed Oliver is a great inside pass rusher, reminds me of John Randle, both were smallish DT's too, but I think he's a better fit in the 4-3.

Make no mistake about it, Oliver has a chance to be great. I could be wrong, but I believe John Randle is in the HOF and the comparison is a good one.
