Eric Allen did the right thing in my view

NFL AM (NFLN) is doing their annual 'On the Beat' mock draft, where a reporter who covers each team locally or someone associated with the team submits a pick for the respective teams that they cover.

The first five reads as follows:

1. BUCS - Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State
2. TITANS - Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
3. JAGUARS - Leonard Williams, DL, USC
4. RAIDERS - Kevin White, WR, West Virginia
5. REDSKINS - Dante Fowler, DE/OLB, Florida

Allen then proceeded to select - Amari Cooper, WR, Alabama

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-am/0ap3000000481021/On-The-Beat-Jets-No-6

The NFLN Guy seemed somewhat incredulous because we brought in Marshall and Decker last year, and we have Kerley in the slot, but Allen stuck to his guns that Cooper is the best player on the board and for now he can help the Jets score more points out of the slot, and with our defense that should make us a lot harder to beat.

I'm sure some Jets fans will agree with the NFLN Guy, but I applaud Allen for making a choice he knows would come with some criticism, but taking the right player in my view. I would be tremendously excited to add Cooper.

Beyond that, Marshall has no guaranteed money beyond 2015 and BTW, is no spring chicken. Just turned 31 yesterday. How often do you get a shot at a top WR? They don't shake loose in FA anymore - you have to draft 'em.

The NFLN guy should be a little more plugged in than that...it's actually his job. He should also know Allen's response ahead of time.

If Mariota is gone, passing up Cooper at 6 would be right up there with passing on Julio Jones or AJ Green because we have Kerley, Salas, Evans and Owasu on the team

That would absolutely SUCK. Sure, I agree with going BAP. But adding a WR when we have SH*T at QB is the worst scenario we could possibly go through.

This team needs a QB and they should have the cahunes to go get one no matter where they need to go.

Eric Allen doesn't have the option of trading up. He came on after the first five picks were made, after Winston and Mariota went 1 and 2, and was asked to make the 6th Pick for the Jets. Under the circumstances I think he made the right call, do you see it differently based on what was available to him?

Bowles said he plans to complete his defense in the draft...doubt they go WR. Also, Cooper, at 6'1, is no Jones or Green....but White is in the Green and Jones mold. He has the height, size, vertical, and speed of those 2...and caught over 100 balls last year.

I would be excited with either top WR, I'd love to see it, but I doubt that's how things shake out. In this scenario, Jets and Vikes likely make a trade, IMO.

If you can't make a trade and you have to make the pick like Allen, who would you take?

Who are the Vikings moving up for?

If I was watching TV and guessing which Mac takes, I would guess he takes Gregory.
If I was betting, my money would be Gregory is on our draft card.
If I was GM, I would draft Cooper.

Cooper is 20 years old. Having him as a situational player until he's ready to be fully unleashed is an exciting proposition...but that's the fan in me talking.

Thats a good answer, I agree from A to Z, all three of the power points and the final analysis.

No, I'm just saying that would be the worst possible scenario for the Jets if the draft does in fact unfold that way. The Jets need a QB bad and I don't believe anyone would debate that. I also believe the Jets would take Mariota if he were available to them.

Well, Woody said yesterday Geno is better than Mariota...so I actually doubt it. I mean, I doubt Woody has scouted Mariota...so where do you think his opinion came from?

Woody needs to learn how to shut his big mouth, because every time he opens it he says something destructive. Its not enough that he likely cost us a draft pick with his big yap, now he wants to telegraph to other teams what our GM and football people are thinking about the draft too, because everyone in the NFL knows what you know, that Woody didn't come up with that idea himself. Unfortunately he's the owner and nobody can tell the owner to PIPE DOWN!!

Knowing Woody and the decisions he's made in the past? Probably right out of his A$$.

The flip side is it could be a smoke screen. No one can know the truth vs fiction at this time of year. April fool's is around the corner.
