Thought I’d start a thread monitoring the status of FAs with March 11 approaching soon.

Dee Ford has been franchise tagged by KC. One pass rusher off the board.

I have a strong feeling the Cowboys will get a deal done or franchise Lawrence. They lost Gregory and Irving indefinitely. Wouldn't want Lawrence anyway, but I can almost guarantee he doesn't hit the market.

According to NFL Trade Rumors, Foles has gotten interest only from the Jaguars and is expected to sign there soon after March 13, barring any major change.

He will be Neil O'Donnell for the Jags. Already failed as a full time starter. And tried to retire.

I keep seeing the same rumors but it makes no sense . The Jags will have to gut their roster to sign him. They have just over $1million in cap If / when they release Bortles. 20 free agents to replace/resign. They are already in a position where they are forced to let go of some of their best players , for a second straight year, and if they sign Fowles, that going to force more cuts.
They are not in a position to complete. Better to trade who they can , stock pile picks and draft a QB or sign a low tier one year guy if they like next year's QBs better.

Blake Bortles didn’t work out too well in Jax. They need to make a change. I think they know AZ is leaning towards Kyler Murray, and the Giants like Haskins. Neither of these two QB’s would’ve been rated by most evaluators above Mayfield, Darnold, and probably even Josh Allen. Last years QB class smoked this year’s class

So the question becomes, do you try to get past other teams with a king’s ransom of draft capital, or do you take a guy who won the MVP of the SB two years ago?

Personally, I think Foles is fool’s gold, but Jax’s options aren’t great. They’re going to bank on getting the hot Foles and not the JAG Foles. Truth is, they’ll probably see a little of both.

And now Seattle uses the franchise tag for the first time in 9 years. Frank Clark tagged.

As expected, pass rushers are being prioritized.

I realized Bortles didn't work out, but they gave him a terrible contract and they are in cap hell as a result.
My point was, they don't have much on offense as it is, as a result of their cap situation.
Foles will further impact their cap situation meaning they will have to cut or trade several of their best players to pay him.
They will not be in a position to compete.
The better thing for them would have been to make those moves and free up cap space , while adding picks and going with a Jag this year and taking a QB next, unless one fell to them. At least then they could be competitive next year or the following. Foles is just so inconsistent. Maybe they feel pairing him back with DeFilippo will bring him back to 2017 level.
Cutting Bortles, Carlos Hyde, Calias Campbell and AJ Bouye frees up Foles salary. They are still in cap hell for the next several years so back loading and restructuring isn't a solution.
After those moves they still need over $20 million for their draft pool and 20 free agents, so more starters have to be let go. How many depends on the offsets in contracts above,
Just don't see it as the best move, especially not long term.

Doesn't matter which foles they get, he's better than Bortles. Tom Coughlin is a pretty smart football person, but I can't understand why the hell he gave Bortles that extension.

The jags are better with foles.

I was really hoping to land Clark. Fortunately this draft should land us a stud pass rusher.

Costello from the Post hearing/speculating that the Jets might show interest in Fowler, Ansah, or Flowers. Ansah is a little old, but still productive. Flowers had a great season with NE. Fowler is probably going to be the best option though. He’s young, and has blossomed after a slow start to his NFL career.

We almost have to take a pass rusher at #3. Teams aren't letting go of their pass rushers.

There’s been a wave of franchise tags on pass rushers over the last few days because teams aren’t letting these guys anywhere near FA. Most important player on the defense, and often times the highest paid.

Ansah is a definite NO for me. He, besides being " a little old " as you so delicately put it, is extremely injury prone. He's had ankle, knee, back, shoulder, and hamstring issues in the last 3 years and actually missed at least 9 games last season due to injury. I wouldn't really say Fowler has blossomed. He only had 4 sacks last season, but, you're right he is the better option.

Yes. There’s a need, and there’s a few players sitting right in front of us. Macc’s gonna have to be blown away with a hefty trade proposal to move back.

It’s a winning scenario no matter how you slice it.

We have 100M+ in cap space and I would spend some of that on Dante Fowler.

Yes, I know his career has been a disappointment until the stretch run and post season with the Rams, but don't lose sight of the fact that he spent a lot of time on the DL in Jacksonville, started his career with a torn ACL and missed his entire rookie season, BAD LUCK, various injuries followed, and to top it all off he was miscast at 4-3 DE when he should have been drafted by a base 3-4 team to play RUSH OLB.

In some respects the same is true of Leonard Williams. He's been good for us, but it's hard for DL's to rush the QB in the 3-4. If Leo had been drafted by a base 4-3 team the sky is the limit for how much more of an impact he could have made as a pass rusher. He's been really good for us regardless, but in the 4-3 he could have been great. Sometimes the scheme doesn't highlight your talents and you have to make the best of it.

Fowler is healthy now, completely healthy, still only 24 years old, and RUSH OLB in the 3-4 was always where he belonged.

So he's young, fits our scheme, and I think he still has a chance to become an impact player off the edge.

He's a FA I would go after ... HARD ... including Le'Veon Bell or Tevin Coleman.
