Nope I don't agree Petty is a huge project... Project sure... I always said Petty has everything you want in a QB he is Smart, Quick release, Above average Arm, Good size and athletic.... Now he needs to learn to play an NFL PRo Style Offense. that's the question.... But what most seem to forget i Gaily doesn't run that traditional Pro style offense. He runs a HYbrid offense that is close to what Geno and Bryce did in College than what Andrew Luck did at Stanford and with Indy..... So yes a learning curve but I always said 2 years tops to get him where we need him to be and a small shot he could be ready year 2. Aaron Rodgers ran the same offense as Petty at Cal in college. GB had said he was ready year 2 but had to wait for Favre to move on till year 4 to start. The reason he dropped was because of him running that spread O in college. Petty and Rodgers skill sets are very similar coming out of college.... Petty's back injury that he played thru hi senior year is why he dropped. He should have been a 1st rounder. Not saying he will be Rodgers but he has the potential to be the answer and NO he is not a huge project.

Agree with 99% of it.

The back injury certainly had a major role in Petty falling, but the real reason he fell so far, was the same reason Wentz shot up draft boards.

Petty had a dismal Senior Bowl week when he had to play under center. He looked like he had never played there before. He hadn't.

One of the things I was really encouraged with about Petty last summer was his performance in the Atlanta game. He played 3 quarters, and looked like he belonged. Major improvement from what he showed Senior Bowl week. He makes that kind of progress this summer again, I'll be very happy.

Right now Petty has a few major things going for him. He and Fitz are very close. Fitz is a guy with out tremendous skills who has been in the NFL for 11 years. He's done that with smarts, not physical talent. He can, and is willing to teach Petty.

Another thing I just read about today is the Jets are one of only 6 teams in the NFL that is using VR headsets to incorporate into training QB's with no pain game time situations. Sounds cool, sounds like it should help a guy like Petty get reps

He has two

I do agree his senior bowl was not good. but I don't think it was all based on playing under center. as it was more reading defenses.. But like I said Gailey's offense is a hybrid... and more of a Shotgun based O... I believe we passed on 59% of time last year with only about 10% of those pass plays coming from under center.... And on our the 41% of our running plays over 15% was from the shot gun as well.... So the progress he made last year was leaps and bounds and this year will be even more..... and with all of that said.... I don't think playing under center is gonna be an issue and I think his growth will be in reading defenses and he will adjust fine... He is a smart kid with a great work ethic.

Petty is considered to have happy feet, a major factor why the jets don't feel he's ready.

I haven't seen one major scouting report on him anywhere in his colleges days, his draft profiles and his year with the Jets that describe Petty as having happy feet.

I'll start by saying I am a huge Petty supporter so there is that...

With that said I am a huge supporter cause I watched him his whole college career. I would not say he has happy feet. Not even close... He can stand in the pocket and make a throw while under pressure.

His one and only issue is going to be how well he picks up reading a complex NFL defense.....

I have faith in the kid. He is smart.

Happy feet: The Jets are optimistic about Petty's chances of developing into a starter some day, but Petty must improve his pocket presence. Bowles said, "When he gets pressure, he becomes antsy and his feet start moving." Bowles said Petty must do a better job of finding his check-down receivers. This will be a tremendously important offseason for the second-year QB.

Missed that... Definitely something to work on but lets remember we had him on the roster last year as the backup for the 3 games of the year... Things like that to me say the Jets see him more ready than all these reports that speculate the Jets thinks he isn't close to being ready... but what do I know I'm drinking the Petty Kool Aid...

honestly, i believe petty starting last season as the 2 was more of a calculated risk then anything else..

i'm hoping like crazy petty will eventually be our starter, BTW..

That's where I hope the VR comes in. A QB can read, and be part of dozens's of plays a day, read the D, and make real time decisions with out getting killed, or hurting the team.

Reps they just don't have time to get in live fire reps.

As far as the Senior Bowl goes, his play during the week, which is what the Senior Bowl is really all about, when there is no blitzing, was bad. he just looked uncomfortable, and out of sync when he had to drop back.

Regardless of the offense scheme, you have to play under center to succeed in the NFL.

That said, I think Petty has the opportunity, physical, and personality qualites to be a very good QB in the NFL

I'm happy we have petty, and I have a good feeling from what I've seen too.

But at the same time I know what I have seen isn't much to go by. He was 2 on the chart last year until geno came back as you said, but the jets felt his deficiencies were equivalent to an outsiders unfamiliarity with Gailey. Not good news, but not bad either. The jets also felt geno was a better number 2 when he returned. I think some of us were expecting petty to be Russell Wilson.

Petty had some deficiencies otherwise he wouldn't be available in the 3rd round. The only way to know how he develops is to watch. I'm glad he's ours.

I don't want to put petty in too early out of need, I'd like to have options, and have him start when coach thinks he's ready.

Hopefully he's a book nerd who mastered the offense in the off season, and picked up nothing but positive tendencies from Fitz. It's exciting to watch him develop.

Every QB has deficiencies that were picked apart going thru their draft process.... Wilson, Brady, Romo, Carr, Dalton etx.... not one of them a first rd pick....

I do agree I don't want Petty to be rushed into playing before he is ready.... My only argument is that I think he is way way closer to being ready than what is being reported....

For once in my life, I hope so too.. LOL!!
Saw another report on bleacher report that jets admin insiders aren't comfortable with geno or petty starting.

I think Fitz gets done. Hearing jets admitted they would bring base pay from 7 up to 10 mil. Factor in signing bonus and incentives, and lack of a market, and I think he comes back.

Seems that the jets are ignoring brick, they reportedly haven't even contacted his agent about anything. To me, I would think they are waiting to confront him to the last possible minute. The reason? The later the conversation happens, the less teams brick can rely on if he thinks he could leave and get more money. I think ideally, Denver cuts Clady, Baltimore signs Clady, and Brock has no market. Then the jets can cut his pay with less risk of him leaving.

I think Petty is a year away from being ready.... Just rooting for a big jump this summer.....

Geno is what Geno is... I don't think the Coaching Staff is comfortable with him at all being the starter..

I definitely think Fitz gets done sometime before the draft

When it comes to Petty, the one concern people have with him is not a deficiency, but an unknown. If he was known to have a weak arm, or inaccuracy, it would be one thing.

But as of now, all we have to go on is a lack of experience in making progressions in an NFL-style offense. It's not a deficiency, it's an unknown.

i believe petty has a legitimate chance to be our starting QB somewhere in the near future..

definitely extenuating circumstances that dropped him into the 4th round.. have we finally lucked out?? time will tell..

but the unknown can become quite apparent relatively quickly as a starting NFL QB.....
