Jets utilize this position in different ways to be exact we have range and quickness...
In the backend of the secondary there normally are two types of safeties coverage FS and physical SS...
But in Robert Saleh's defense the backend is coverage safeties only... Meaning his safeties like Ashtyn Davis, Jason Pinnock, Elijah Riley and newcomer Javin Smith (former Raiders linebacker, listed as DB for us)... I wouldn't be surprised if they converted someone like Lamar Jackson to safety because he has ball skills but like Jason Pinnock he does employ that closing burst that is desired for this defenses corner position...
Now we do have strong safeties that are in the box but technically they are marked by the NFL as linebackers. We technically converted positions of two drafted safeties into linebackers... Expect more prospects to in the future to also experience that position change...
The question remains do we have the right TALENT at each level, the answer can only be determined by the coaching staff... But Ashtyn Davis did improve as the season went on and when they claimed Elijah Riley and inserted him in the lineup he also excelled... Then converting draft pick cornerback Jason Pinnock to safety the last couple of weeks he started to flash not with turnovers or pass deflections but in the number of snaps he has gotten on defense...
So the question comes to besides the front seven do we need to address the back end with another coverage safety?
At linebacker, there is a clear problem with the cover ability from veteran CJ Mosley... The durability of both Jamien Sherwood and Hamsah Nasirildeen are in question, so we will see if they take steps to insuring these players have depth with them or they become the depth...
Quincy Williams is a shot of lightening and he showed he can press cover he will need to improve his coverage skill set but he looks to be the right fit...
Questions will surround Blake Cashman and his durability and if it is time to part ways with him...
Del'Shawn Phillips has the size, the speed the athleticism to be effective in this defense... He also has that aggressiveness in what is expected out of the linebackers in this defensive front the key question is do they bring him back for depth he is entering RFA territory ending his 3rd year...
