Family members at the scene identified the victim as Joe McKnight, former NFL player and local high school football standout. McKnight, 28, who went to John Curtis Christian School in River Ridge, played for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs. He also played in the Canadian Football League.

The shooting, reported about 3 p.m., occurred at the intersection of Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard.

She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then he fired again, she said.

The victim's body was on Behrman Highway, surrounded by a shield.

Suspect in shooting death of Joe McKnight released as investigation continues

[ESPN]18187793[/ESPN]

The man who shot Joe McKnight three times from inside his car was released from custody overnight and has not been formally charged in the death of the former USC Trojans and New York Jets running back, authorities said Friday.

"Ronald Gasser was released overnight and has not been formally charged as of yet," Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato said Friday. "We will consult the district attorney's office today to discuss this further."

A day earlier, the sheriff's spokesman said authorities anticipated charging Gasser, but with what had yet to be determined.
"We continue conducting interviews with those witnesses who come forward to provide us with anything they may have seen regarding this tragic incident," Fortunato said Friday.

The death of former NFL player Joe McKnight spurs an outpouring of grief from friends and former teammates.A sheriff's statement added that preliminary accounts from witnesses and the shooter "suggested these events represented the culmination of a road rage incident."

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said Gasser, 54, fired three rounds through an open window from inside his car at McKnight, who was standing outside his car. The shooting occured about 3 p.m. Thursday in Terrytown, a suburb of New Orleans just across the Mississippi River.

Normand said three casings were located, and Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich said Friday that McKnight had wounds to his left hand and entry wounds to his right shoulder and the right side of his chest.

No guns were found outside either vehicle.

Gasser, whose hometown wasn't immediately released, stayed at the scene, relinquished his semi-automatic handgun to officers and was taken into custody and questioned, the sheriff said.

Normand said witnesses observed a "heated verbal exchange" between Gasser and McKnight before the shooting. However, Normand said one witness account, which said Gasser was standing over McKnight when he fired a shot, was factually incorrect and "did not happen."

She said family members haven't had any communication with the sheriff's office about Gasser's release, saying she learned of it through a radio broadcast Friday.

"He might be released now, but God is going to bring about justice in it," Franklin said.

McKnight was born in River Ridge, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans, and starred at John Curtis Christian High School. He was considered the No. 1 running back recruit in the country when he signed with USC.

He played three seasons at USC (2007-09) under coach Pete Carroll and was often compared to do-it-all running back Reggie Bush.

McKnight totaled 2,755 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns while with the Trojans, and his 2,213 career rushing yards are 16th all time at the school. He did not play in the final game of the 2009 season -- the Emerald Bowl -- as USC investigated him for allegedly receiving improper benefits.

He eventually left school for the NFL draft, where the Jets made him a fourth-round pick in 2010. He spent three seasons with New York, amassing one start in 39 games and totaling 502 yards rushing and 177 yards receiving. He also was one of the NFL's top kick returners in 2011 and 2012, averaging 29.4 yards per return over that span.

But McKnight landed in the doghouse amid a turbulent training camp in 2013. He flunked the team's conditioning test, blaming dehydration; he was arrested in New Jersey on outstanding traffic violations on an off day; he missed practice time with what the team characterized as a "head injury" and McKnight later called a concussion; and he got into a war of words with a fan on Twitter, suggesting they meet for a fight.

McKnight was released by the Jets in August 2013, the biggest surprise of the team's final cuts before the regular season.
McKnight signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in January 2014, playing two games that year and scoring two touchdowns, both on receptions, before tearing an Achilles tendon.

He played in the CFL this season, with the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders. He had 38 rushes for 228 yards for the Roughriders, whose season ended Nov. 5. As of Thursday, he still was listed on their roster.

McKnight is the second NFL player to die as a result of an apparent road rage incident in 2016. New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith was killed in April.

Information from ESPN staff writer Rich Cimini and The Associated Press was used in this report.

i think they are still investigating the incident. Early reports and eye witness accounts were proven false by the police
I don't see where they were 'proven' false. I mean they say they recovered the shells from the vehicle, but it was 3 shells, certainly could have been moved. And the Sheriff made it sound like the shooters account conflicted with the eyewitness, so that's not really hard proof. I don't know what tye truth is, but I don't know that we have enough info to say anything goes was proved false beyond a doubt.

Maybe I did Niko to conclusion but I did read an article where it said that the witness had said that the shooter was on top of McKnight and said "I told you not to fuck with me" before shooting. The sheriff said that did not happen.

But does that matter as far as releasing the shooter? Isn't it murder either way? Why would the cops release a murderer?

I dont know. The sheriff mentioned that this is likely a 'stand your ground' case. From what I've read, stand your ground is an affirmative defense, which I think means that the defendant has to prove his justification. To me, that would mean that even if the Sheriff thinks this is a cut-and-dry stand your ground, he needs to make an arrest and have the defendant prove he was justified. I don't understand letting him walk at all.

Me neither. If I or one of my relatives were killed by some loon due to some road incident, I sure hope the guy involved would at least be arrested.
