Former longtime Jet deserves a better ending than this

When David Harris signed with the Patriots, it felt like the ultimate revenge plot for the longtime Jets linebacker. He goes to the rival Patriots and wins a Super Bowl while his former team struggles to win a game after unceremoniously cutting him in June after an OTA practice.

But it has not worked out like that. The Patriots will meet Sunday with identical records, and Harris may not even be on the field. Harris has been active for four games and played a total of seven defensive snaps this season after signing a two-year deal with New England.

Harris and the Patriots have not been the fit either side had hoped. Mike Reiss, the Patriots beat reporter for ESPN, suggested Tuesday that Harris could be cut once Shea McClellin returns from injury.

If this is the way Harris’ career ends, it is a sad final chapter for an underappreciated player. Harris was the glue of the Jets defense during his 10 seasons with the team. He was the ultimate team player who never caused any problems in the locker room and always produced on game day.

Harris deserved a better exit with the Jets. It would be nice to see him get some playing time against them Sunday.

Harris has barely played for the Pats. He should have taken a pay cut and played for the Jets. Having said that, Demario Davis has been a great addition for us. Glad that everything played out the way it has.

I really liked David Harris, how could you not but I find it very interesting that all of these overpriced vets that were cut by the Jets have either remained on the street or have been unproductive for their new teams. Remember also how much crap MM took for gutting the team of these guys. On one hand you can praise him for cutting bait on all of them, or be critical of him for keeping them around for as long as he did. Either way, the talking heads are once again dead wrong. I also wonder which ones were responsible for the crap locker room. I also can't help but wonder who was responsible for keeping these guys around. I'm guessing that Bowles was saddled with them whether he liked it or not, and in all likelihood MM was also. Woody is my guess thinking it would sell seats if another year could be squeezed out of them. Forget the future, only worry about next year's revenues. That kind of thinking is why this franchise hasn't been successful consistently. Sorry for the rant.

I think it was the correct move to cut the veterans. While I liked Harris he wa a liability in the passing game for the last three years and it was time to move on. The other cuts speak for themselves.

At the beginning of the year, I'd say that we were tanking. Cutting the veterans and bringing in young unproven guys, however, in hindsight, we are not tanking. We have upgraded in nearly every position where we cut people.

MLB -- Demario Davis > David Harris
WR -- Javon Kearse, Robby Anderson > Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall
C -- Wesley Johnson > Nick Mangold
LT -- Beachum > Clady
RT Shell > Giacomini
CB Claiborne > Revis
QB McCown > Last year's Fitz

Obviously, this is all in hindsight but when you factor in that these guys were headaches in the locker room, we made the right choice

I really wish Mac had kept him for veteran leadership. But honestly Darron Lee was stinko last season and didn't seem to learn a thing from David Harris. So I guess holding on to him would have been pointless. I just hope the Jets can get another linebacker that can play as well and be a quiet leader like Harris was?

You forgot Pryor/Gilchrist <<< Adams and Maye, but a good list. My only hesitation is at C where Johnson hasn't been good. Mangold is obviously done, so Johnson is better than nothing I guess. That position clearly has to be addressed in either FA or draft.

Absolutely. I did forget about the safeties. That's probably our biggest upgrade.

I agree with you on Johnson. By no means should Mac stop trying to upgrade that position or any position on that list (except safety). I was just stating how they are better than the players we had last year.

This really is an insult to a great player in Jets lore. We never had a care or worry for almost 10 years, can you believe that? That really is remarkable. He was a lunch pale guy. The kind of guy that was never as athletically gifted or flashy as say Revis was, but still an EXCELLENT in his own right. He should go to the Jets hall of fame immediately and I really hope mac opts to sign him to a one day contract so he can retire as a Jet..........

This is actually correct, however, are all of you trying to tell me that Mac knew this all along? I think anyone who claims to have known that this would turn out this way is full of shit. No one could have seen this coming.

But all I can say imagine how bad this team would be right now if Mac had opted to hold on to these players????

I'm not trying to say that at all. My point is that several of the bigger names on the list probably would/should have been gone at least a year earlier had it not been for some fluke performances in 2015. Unfortunately, I think that Woody latched on to those performances and forced both MM's and TB's hand in holding onto them. Strictly my opinion, but I think that finally someone has seen the light and allowed this thing to be rebuilt properly.

Harris refused to restructure his contract, ended up taking less money to play for NE in hope of getting a ring. He made a decision, how it ends up remains to be seen, but it's not looking good right now.
