When Brandon Moore thinks about Doug Marrone, the longtime Jets guard remembers the 2002 season, standing on the practice field long after everyone else had left.

That was Moore’s first season in the NFL. He was an undrafted free agent on the practice squad, converting from the position he played in college, defensive tackle, to offensive guard. Marrone was in his first season as the Jets’ offensive line coach, and Moore got to know him well.

“Most coaches after practice, especially in the summer after two-a-days or in the season when it’s cold outside in November and December and everybody wants to go in and get hot cocoa, he’s one of those coaches that was out with us pushing that sled — me and Jonathan Goodwin and whoever else was on the practice squad,” Moore said Friday.

“He was very instrumental in me going from a raw individual to being the player I was over the course of my career.”

Moore went on to play 10 seasons, start 142 games and make a Pro Bowl.

Years after those long nights at Hofstra with Moore, Marrone is now the favorite to land the Jets’ head coaching job after opting out of his deal with the Bills this week. Players from the 2002-05 Jets, when Marrone was the offensive line coach, speak highly of him and believe he would be a good choice to lead the current Jets.

“I don’t think I can say enough good things about him,” Hall of Fame running back Curtis Martin said. “I really like him as a person, and I think he’s a heck of a coach.”

Martin had his best season in 2004, when Marrone was coaching the offensive line. Martin won the rushing title with 1,697 yards and had 12 rushing touchdowns. Martin said it was the best line he ever played behind and credited Marrone with getting the group to play as hard as it did.

“Kevin Mawae, Pete Kendall, those are good guys, but those are strong personalities,” Martin said of the center and left guard. “If you don’t have a strong personality to match theirs, they’re not going to respect you enough to get the most out of them. Doug had that respect from them.”

Mawae was going into his ninth season when Marrone arrived with the Jets. Unlike Moore, who was just learning, Mawae already knew his way around the NFL. When Marrone got the job, he called Mawae at his Baton Rouge, La., home and introduced himself.

“Who do you know on the staff to get the job here?” Mawae asked, fully aware that most NFL jobs are about who you know.

“I’ve never worked with any coach on this staff before,” Marrone told him. “I interviewed and they gave me the job.”

Mawae instantly was impressed.

“I loved playing for him,” said Mawae, who made three Pro Bowls under Marrone. “He helped me understand the whys of the game.”

Moore said Marrone and former Jets offensive line coach Bill Callahan are the two coaches he thinks work the hardest at improving every day. The way Marrone treated the guys buried on the depth chart showed it.

“He had the Kevin Mawaes, Pete Kendalls, Dave Szotts, all these Pro Bowlers, but he felt like he was only as good as the backups and the young guys that were there,” Moore said. “I’ve had other O-line coaches that could care less about the guy that came here last week off the practice squad. He was out there working with us to get better because he knew we were only a play away.”

Moore believes Marrone will be a successful NFL head coach.

“He’s approachable,” Moore said. “His office was always open. You’d come in and he was always excited to see you. He was never standoffish. I think those things work well. He’s definitely going to find a way, offensively especially, to be successful.”

Martin said in his 12 years in the NFL, he figured out what separated the good coaches from the also-rans.

“One of the things I always recognized with coaches is how players respond to them,” Martin said. “A lot of people don’t think coaches make a really big difference, but I’ve seen coaches make all the difference in the world. It really depends on the type of person they are and the type of respect they have with the players. Those are the two things Doug has working for him, is that he’s a great person and he has a lot of respect from the players he coached.”

Sounds like he gets respect like rex but the difference is he holds people accountable.

we're hearing the pros & cons for hiring marrone.. that's to be expected..

casserly/wolf have been hired to help find our new HC & GM.. if marrone is that guy, great..

but it's always tricky hiring a HC without your GM in place..

it wouldn't be tricky if casserly is our de facto GM though..

The New York Jets, running a hurry-up search for their next coach, will interview former Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone Saturday in Florham Park, New Jersey, it was confirmed.

Garrett
Marrone
Only three days ago, Marrone was coaching the Bills, but he exercised a unique opt-out clause in his contract on New Year's Eve. The Jets expressed immediate interest, following up the next day with a phone call by owner Woody Johnson to Marrone.

Marrone, a Bronx native and former Jets assistant, has a strong interest in the Jets. He also has attracted interest from the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears, although the sense is the Bears will hire a general manager before a coach.

Marrone went 15-17 in his two seasons with the Bills.

Johnson & Co. have been active the past few days. They already have conducted four head-coaching interviews -- Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Seahawks offensive-line coach Tom Cable and Jets running-backs coach Anthony Lynn. The Jets' delegation returned late Friday night from their interviews in Seattle.

Quinn and Marrone are thought to be the leading candidates. Marrone could have the advantage because, by rule, the Jets wouldn't be able to hire Quinn until the Seahawks are eliminated from the playoffs. And that could take from one to four weeks.

The Jets also are hoping to interview Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, and San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Frank Reich. Bowles and Kubiak, both involved in the wild-card round, wouldn't be available to interview until next weekend if their teams remain alive.

Sources say Jets consultant Charley Casserly is a strong Marrone supporter. They never worked together, but they got friendly at various NFL functions such as the scouting combine. Casserly, fellow consultant Ron Wolf, and Johnson are orchestrating the interviews. Team president Neil Glat has been involved, but not in a football-related capacity.

Ideally, the Jets would like to hire a GM first, but they are not married to that order. They could audible, especially if Marrone hits a home run in his interview. They have already interviewed three GM candidates, and they are scheduled to meet with two more over the next two days. That number could grow to four if Chris Ballard (Kansas City Chiefs) and Chris Grier (Miami Dolphins) are granted permission to speak with the Jets.

I agree with Jetgreen13, not a good idea to hire a HC before a GM.

If Marrone is hired I expect Casserly, or Mike Maccagnan to be hired shortly there after.

Casserly is a very long shot, but still possible. Think Maccagan will be the guy. Really have a lot of reservations about Marrone, just not impressed with his resume'.

i was very glad that Casserly and Wolf were brought in to lead the search, instead of the stupid process we used in the Idzik search, so I guess I'll have to live with what ever they turn out.

My dream team when this first started was, Casserly as GM, with Elliot Wolf as the Asst. GM/heir apparent, and Quinn as the HC.

Of course that's not going to happen, particularly with Wolf getting promoted. Have to wonder if the Pack were worried about that also when they promoted Wolf.

Still would much rather have the Seattle duo then Marrone.

Jets should bring Mehta into the interview to see if Marrone still wants the job :)

If people wanted passion for the franchise in the next head coach, Marrone has it, the guy is a lifelong Jets fan from the Bronx

Just wondering, other then the media anointing Marrone the favorite, why do you like Marone?

When he first left the Bills I thought O K, why not? The Bills record has improved the last two years.

Upon further review, he seems like the definition of mediocrity. 25-25 at Syracuse. 15-17 with the Bills. While the Bills record has improved the last 2 years, it isn't because of the offense. Marrone is an offensive coach. They were 26th in offense last year. The reason for the improvement is their defense has been outstanding. The offense on the same level with the Jets. The Bills did beat an awful Jets team, but when the chips were down, with the play offs on the line, the Bills lost to an awful Raiders team. Not impressed. If a Jets HC had that happen we would be screaming for his head right now.

The reasons he left the Bills is very troubling to me. It seems like the main reason is his agent, Jimmy Sexton, did a great job in putting him in a situation where he could turn 4 million into 8 million by leaving, and he did. Can't blame him for that, but not sure it qualifies him to be the next HC.

The reasons he is giving is, that he didn't want anyone in between, himself and the owner. (The Bills were trying to hire Bill Polian as chief of football operations) Is he looking for control? LOL. Another major reason was he didn't like how the Buffalo press treated him. Buffalo media? Really?

Man, wait till he meets Mehta , and the rest of the crew at the NYDN. Can't wait

Well for one that 25-25 is deceiving if you knew Syracuse before he took it over the prior coach drove that once proud tradition into the ground. We couldn't even beat a team like Connecticut when in the 90's we used to beat teams like VA Tech. So for him to be able to turn that program around like that in only 4 years is really amazing.

Second reason is because yes the bills don't have a winning record under him but you can see they are prepared for every game now the talent might not mean they win every game but at least he prepares the team.

Fair enough in Greenbay we led at the Half and the Pat games were always close. The Lions we lost by a TD.. Look the thing is you can't be fair or objective because of your Rex hate. Even though Rex is one of my all time favorite coaches I thought he should have been gone when Tanny left.. He should have fought for the O like he did for the D and for that reason alone it showed he was flawed as a HC.. Like most fans you will let your emotion overrule your intellect.. I don't..:smiley-finger007:

Actually I said many times you give him a veteran team he is decent. In the games I watched I saw a guy that talks but can't back it up. I saw a coach putting his rookies as kings of the field before they ever played a down. I saw a coach that doesn't know how to teach discipline because he wants to be friends. I could go on and on.
