Four game suspension UPHELD

My whole issue is there shouldn't be a punishment period. Its all gamesmanship to me. The Colts got their asses handed to them and that's that. They should have stepped and played a better game. So should have the Jets and every other team the Pats beat.

Gamesmanship IMO is the players finding whatever angle they can on the field to get that edge to win. Whether its deflated balls, stickem on the hands, faking injuries or doctored jerseys. Its all the same shit to me and has been going on since the NFL existed. So why stop and start punishing players now?
By your definition, the nfl shouldn't punish any cheating, because it's done in a competitive spirit?
The outcome of the game doesn't dictate if you cheated or not.

Again, if they beat the Colts so badly, why did they risk cheating? It's absolutely stupid.

Regardless, if you fail a steroids test, you are suspended. You don't say, well I would have won without the steroids so therefore I shouldn't get in trouble.

Not to mention, this is more than the Colts, they didn't just sneak into the bathroom and Dr the balls once, the ravens tipped off the Colts, and the Patriots are known pathological cheaters. This happened for about 4 years.

Not to mention their illegal eligible receiver plays that won them playoff games. Then the nfl comes out after the super bowl and says, oh yes, those plays were illegal.

Fello Jets fans, I see quite a few of you have responded to my post in debate of the punishment for Brady and the team. I hate the Pats as much as anyone else on the board. Please understand that but I just didn't look at this situation as cheating but more so gamesmanship.

Now if your telling me the NFL is punishing Brady more for the cover up and non cooperation then I'm fine with that and do understand it. I'm just hoping one day (like this year) it won't matter what the Pats or any other team tries our beloved Jets will be enough to beat them anyway.

I would say this is even worse than that. Umpires don't inspect gloves before games. In this case the doctoring of the balls happened after officials already checked them. A flagrant undermining of the officials' authority.

This is why it goes way beyond gamesmanship. This was a deliberate conspiracy to undermine the officials' check of the game balls.

Right. That, coupled with the coverup and destruction of evidence puts this in a much more serious category than, say, Gaylord Perry scuffing baseballs.

I am beginning to believe the league is coming down so hard on the Pats not because of this incident, but one we are not even aware of. Could it be that another team brought evidence of them cheating to the league after Spygate, and the league read them the riot act?

If there was something else that could have tarnished the league, perhaps the league asked both the Pats and the other team to keep quiet about it. Nmeanwhile Goodell promised the owners and thePats that if they got caught again, it would be a Draconian penalty?

It just seems weird that after a decade of the league allowing the Pats to flaunt rule after rule, the NFL would suddenly get tough on them. Unless there is something going on in the background.... Perhaps the other owners are demanding this.

That is certainly possible.

There was speculation after Spygate that the league destroyed the evidence but issued no further sanctions because the Pats had stuff on a bunch of other teams, and threatened to go public if the league gave any further penalties. Essentially, the theory is that the Pats blackmailed the league offices, which is why the NFL has been so lenient toward the Pats up until this incident. The carrot to the stick is the massive salary Kraft got the owners to give Goodell, $44 million per year.

It's possible the league now has other stuff on the Pats, stuff that they are keeping under wraps because it could be so damaging to the credibility of the league. But now the league has the upper hand.

This is all just speculation, so take it for what it's worth.

Well if the NFL is covering up evidence of widespread wrongdoing, and strategically employing rules not to enforce fair play, but to enhance the NFL's position regarding the release of that evidence, then it is no wonder they have a credibility problem.

This type of speculation suggests that the league is already severely lacking in credibility. Whether they keep it under wraps or not, there is already a strong sense that the league enforces its rules unequally, and in a haphazard way.

I think it sort of spiraled out of control, the way a lie leads to more lies. That's what this sounds like to me.

I totally agree with you, I think it is very likely that what you described is exactly what happened. The fact that we can just casually believe this shows just how far the NFL's credibility has fallen.

The thing is, it wasn't a draconian penalty. Should have been a year suspension both for Brady and Belichick. They actually got off very light.
