Expected release of Bryce Petty anytime now... Kinda curious since the team was fielding offers during the draft to trade for him now they are simply just going to cut him... curious!!!

Can't imagine that there's much trade value for him now that the draft is over. Most teams needing a back-up QB have already addressed that issue.

not sure what is curious about this? the jets may have gone fishing looking to get something for petty. when you say they were "fielding offers", did you mean that they indeed had an offer or offers? i doubt they turned down any offer only to just release him days late.

seems more likely they put it out there he was available for trade. no one bit, so they cut him. completely expected imo

the curious part is whatever trade offer they were getting they should of taken regardless if was a big bag of nutz... even a conditional pick next year would of been well worth than just simply releasing him... unfortunately for Petty they waited until after the draft to make it nearly impossible for him to get a fair shake at signing with another team, but there are teams that will take a chance on him like Arizona, expected to be one of his suitors...

Couldn't agree more. Getting anything at all would have been better than nothing at all, but, not knowing what the offers made were I can't tell how much or little they messed up. I wouldn't have expected much of an offer, not even, ha, ha, a bag of nuts because he went out at the end of the season and blatantly proved he wasn't cutting it as a QB.

Hes still PS eligible right? Maybe if he clears waivers, might as well keep developing him if they think theres a shred of hope.

why do you assume they actually got a trade offer?

if they did, i agree with you. i just don't know why you think they got any offers. who would give up anything for petty, knowing the jets would release him?

Petty isn’t worth any draft pick compensation. But a Bleacher Report report stated that “teams are calling the Jets about Petty’s availability” just after the draft. So there was conceivably an interest by a few teams possibly looking at givIng up something like a 2019 7th round pick (?)

i'm just finding it hard to believe macc turned down any offer, even one for a conditional 7th round pick in 2027, only to turn around and cut the guy days later.

which leads me to believe the bleacher report was incorrect, or at least no one offered anything.

two reporters Ian Rapoport & Brian Costello stated the team was receiving trade offers for Bryce Petty after day one of the draft... Now it could of been a smokescreen by the team to get other QB (backup) needy teams to offer something or if true then why if they knew they were going to release him prior to camp then take anything coming their way...

that is all I am saying... if there were offers, why not take the best offer out there and move on from him then hold onto him hoping you can get something better until everyone pulls off the table those said offers...

this is the article posted by PFT:

Drafting Sam Darnold with the third overall pick left the Jets with five quarterbacks on their 90-man roster, but that number is set to drop to four on Thursday.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will release Bryce Petty. The move will leave Darnold, Josh McCown, Teddy Bridgewaterand Christian Hackenberg on the quarterback depth chart.

There was a report during the draft that the Jets were taking calls about Petty, although it seems odd that the team would have chosen to release him rather than get even a conditional draft pick in exchange for moving him off the roster.

Petty was a fourth-round pick in 2015 and saw his first regular season action the next year when he took over as the starting quarterback at the end of a dismal season. He also started the final three games last season after McCown broke his hand.

The worst thing about this is that Hack is still here.
He must have secret pictures of Mac. (Wimmins and chillluns may be reading this, or I would be more specific)

Not for long, I think.
if bridgewater is healthy enough to play if need be, i can't see justifying carry 4 QBs after drafting one at 3..

& since bridgewater is on a 1 year deal, you would hope that they believe he'll be heathy enough to play if need be..

That may be true and that’s the only reason he will still be on this team come season start. Hack has no business still being on this team by training camp really. If what your say isn’t the case, they’ll cut or hopefully trade him soon enough. Only other legimate reason to keep him is if Bridgewater isn’t able to go this year and the Jets believe they’ll need to keep three QBs on the roster this year.

My theory on the start of the season is Hack will get cut regardless unless Bridgewater can’t go this year. If Bridgewater is good to go, I think Darnold can legitimately beat out McCown and Bridgewater for the season start. He seems smart enough and more then talented enough. However; the Jets may feel he still needs to sit and watch for 2-6 games just to give him a sideline learning and coaching view. Or they may feel the team won’t be able to support him enough and that will cause a negative effect on him.

I personally don’t side with that. If he’s ready to go then play him and let him take his lumps but I will trust in the regime on this one. Now if he doesn’t legitimately win the job, I believe he will be the number three for about 4-6 games and he will then legitimately move up to the number two. He will then start by week 8 at the latest because we’ll be 2-6 or 3-5 under McCown anyway. The team will probably go 4-4 the rest of the year with Darnold.
