Mauldin looks awesome. Most excited I've been about a young OLB since Abraham. I expect him to make an impact as a rookie. He will get more of those penalties though.
I attribute the penalties and missed tackle (sack) to excitement, which is understandable with the kid playing in his first NFL game, and he's an excitable kid to being with, because he cares and this really matters to him.

That said, I expect him to calm down, limit the penalties and make the sacks when he gets there, once he settles in and settles down. But here's why I share your excitement, because what he flashed on Thursday you can't teach. You can teach technique, but you can't teach burst off the edge, you can't teach that quick first step, and you can't teach the desire to get there. This kid looks like a natural edge rusher. I'm excited about Trevor Reilly too. He was really good at Utah, good pass rusher, and he looked real quick off the edge on Thursday too. He's a second year sleeper.

It may or may not be to start the season, but I think these kids are going to make Calvin Pace obsolete.

Was listening to Ross Tucker's show this AM on NFL-Sirius, and his guest was commenting on what rookies stood out in their opening game. He mentioned Clark the DE from Michigan, Abdullah and LWilliams of Jets. I didn't think Williams did anything spectacular, but I don't study film for a living either. He said that Williams played all over the DL, played with power, leverage and speed and clearly is everything the Jets and the rest of the league (except 1st 5 teams in draft) thought he would be. Very good news indeed. I also thought Mauldin looked the part as well, and I could see him easily surpassing higher drafted rush OLBs like Ray. Williams and Mauldin could be the next generation of great Jet front 7 talent.

Good post.

This is year 3 of Milliner being injured heading into the season. If he was a QB, we'd be predicting he should be cut by the end of training camp. Amazing what we do and do not have patience for...
I agree, but the initial poster I responded to admitted its a huge IF about Milliner staying healthy. He was essentially saying, in the unlikely event that he actually stays on the field this year when he comes back. I do agree that Milliner has starters talent, but I also agree that his staying healthy is a longshot.

I'm not going crazy about our pathetic performance on defense. I do think Cromartie and Skrine are going to disappoint, but overall I think our defense will be top 10, with a shot at top 5. I just can't go crazy because Coach Bowles admitted it was Vanilla and he let his coaches call the plays. And I was fine with O, because the line looked great. I can't expect an explosion from them, because Fitzpatrick is limited, but I do expect them to be competent

I was worried about our oline heading into the season...I am less worried now than I was before. Carpenter looked really good. He's looking like an A+ signing...just like practice reports stated (I know people keep saying practice reports don't mean anything, but this is an example where the play matched the reports).

I think we saw what we are...in the first 12 plays we ran 9 times and passed 3. I think this type of conservative approach fits what we're trying to do.

Cro and Skrine will give up and make some plays...they are what they are, which is better than anything we had last year. All 3 (add Revis) would have been #1s on last year's team.
