Ten things to know about the Dallas Cowboys (4-9)

Ten things to know about the Dallas Cowboys (4-9)

1. Because of the overall badness of the NFC East, the Cowboys remain alive (barely) in the division, which means they should be motivated for the game in theory. They've clinched their first losing season since 2010 and they could end up with a top-5 draft choice. Dark days in Dallas.

2. The Jets' last meeting against the Cowboys was a classic -- Sept. 11, 2011, the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On an emotional night at MetLife Stadium, the Jets won a thrilling season opener, 27-24, on Nick Folk's field goal with 27 seconds left. The last time they met in Dallas was Thanksgiving 2007, a 34-3 loss for the Jets at the old Texas Stadium. This will be their first game at AT&T Stadium -- a.k.a. Jerry's World.

3. The Cowboys' season effectively ended in Week 2, when Tony Romo fractured his collarbone for the first time. Since then, they're 2-9. Put it this way: Overall, they're 3-1 with Romo, who was re-injured upon his return, and 1-8 with Matt Cassel and Brandon Weeden.

4. Things are so bad in Big D that some folks are pining for Kellen Moore to replace Cassel. On Monday, coach Jason Garrett said he's sticking with Cassel. Under him, the Dallas offense has produced only eight touchdowns in 68 drives over seven games. The Cowboys have generated zero or one touchdown in four of his six starts. Cassel stunk it up last week against the Green Bay Packers, completing only 13 of 29 passes for 114 yards and an interception.

5. The Jets shouldn't under-estimate Cassel. Why not? Two words: T.J. Yates.

6. Wide receiver Dez Bryant, who missed five games with a broken foot, must be going out of his mind. Without Romo, he can't get the ball on a consistent basis. He has been targeted 63 times, but only has 27 receptions. He dropped two passes in rainy conditions in Green Bay, finishing with only one catch for nine yards -- his first one- or no-catch game since 2013. The Bryant-Darrelle Revis matchup will be worth watching.

7. The Dallas running attack features Darren McFadden, a running back who was high on the Jets' draft board in 2008. He rushed for 111 yards last week, his fourth 100-yard game, but let's not lose sight of the big picture: The Cowboys erred by not re-signing DeMarco Murray, who obviously isn't digging his new job in Philadelphia.

8. The Cowboys' defense isn't terrible (16th in yards allowed), but it lacks playmakers. They have no takeaways in eight of 13 games -- "inexplicable," according to owner/GM Jerry Jones. Their run defense fell apart against the Packers, as Eddie Lacy led a 230-yard rushing attack. They can expect a heavy dose of Chris Ivory. Linebacker Rolando McClain is a question mark because of concussion-like symptoms.

9. The controversial Greg Hardy (remember him?) has faded in recent weeks. He has only 1.5 sacks in the last five games, giving him 5.5 for the season. But, hey, he's a terrific leader, according to Jones.

10. Lastly, let's pay homage to a future Hall of Famer Jason Witten, who recently became the 10th player in NFL history to reach 1,000 receptions. Next to Tony Gonzalez, Witten, 33, is the most prolific tight end in history.

How did we sound yesterday? I was there and thought we were loud but the crowd left once the game was decided.

The litmus test is how hoarse one is the next day. When the crowd is truly loud, even people (like me) who don't generally scream and yell still have to strain their voices to talk to the person next to you. In all honesty, that hasn't happened to me since Shea. Sure, it could get loud enough from the true fans there but for that size crowd, it should be deafening.

Skip Bayless, the dumbass moron on ESPN, First Take says the Cowboys will beat the Jets. He honestly wants and feels these sorry fuckers can win their division at 7-9 and do some damage in the playoffs. My question is, why would any fan want their team in the playoffs with a 7-9 record anyway? Sad part is he honestly believes it but can't justify it at all with any real reason. No Romo, Dez is still not 100%, their back up QBs stink, no running game and their playing against a very healthy and hungry 8-5 Jets team fighting for a wild card spot. Jets don't just beat the Cowboys, PLEASE beat the shit out of the Cowboys just for the sake of shutting Skip the fuck up and making him look like a fool on National television this Monday.

27-13 sounds good for a Jets win for the general basis of just keeping the momentum going in hopes of a playoff berth. For the sake of embarrassing and shutting up that idiot asshole Skip Bayless (which no matter what, shutting him up will never happen) I'd say a 40-3 Jets win sounds more like it.

I hope we beat them 72-6 and then beat Brady (including Snacks, Mo, Rich, Williams and Mouldin all meeting at the QB and ending the cheating bastards career) and Rex by bigger scores.....but I'll be thrilled with three one point wins and even two will give me a lot of positive hope for 2016

I hope Bowles is reminding his team not to overlook these 'boys. It's the only NFL game on that day. Everyone who has 3 free prime time hours will be watching. Here's the perfect opportunity to show the world we're ready. And we're a very dangerous team to play against. Let's dominate in Arlington first. A non conference loss against a weaker opponent will be damaging to our overall confidence. We need to continue improving each week.

Pryor, Jets vs. Witten, Dallas

Pryor, Jets vs. Witten, Dallas

2nd-Year Safety Says Jets Are Ready to Face a Run of Top TEs; Next Up: Cowboys' Ol' Reliable

The Jets are facing quite a bloc (pun intended) of tight ends in this last quarter of the regular season. Last week it was Tennessee's Delanie Walker, this week it's future Hall of Famer in Jason Witten of Dallas, then New England's Rob Gronkowski, then Buffalo's Charles Clay.
Calvin Pryor says bring 'em on.
"We feel comfortable with how we're playing tight ends," the second-year safety said after today's practice, three days before running into Witten on Saturday night in Big D. "We know we're going to have tough matchups week in and week out, but we're looking forward to it as well. Just with our preparation and game-planning, I think it's starting to pay off. We just have to do our job and play disciplined football."
Green & White fans who remember only Gronk's 11 catches for 108 yards in Game 6 and two long receptions by the Giants' Will Tye might think the Jets haven't improved much against TEs, but that would be incorrect. Last year TEs caught 14 touchdowns against the Jets. This year the number is two — one to Gronkowski and one to Miami's Jake Stoneburner in London.

And anecdotally, the defense is coming off a strong showing against Walker. With Buster Skrine getting a lot of the coverage responsibility, Marcus Mariota threw to his favorite target eight times with three catches for 28 yards until the final drive with the 30-8 win locked up.
A lot of the D's improvement in this area is due to Pryor's improvement. He has just his Game 2 interception at Indianapolis but the past three weeks he's totaled four pass defenses and two tackles for loss, and despite missing three games with an ankle injury, his 57 tackles, many of the big-bopper variety, are tied for second-most in the secondary.
"Well, I've played better than last year, so I think that's one step in the right direction," he said. "I just have to keep playing at a very high level and keep making plays for this defense."

Witten by the Numbers

AP_776386840019-article.jpg

Head coach Todd Bowles wasn't buying the notion that Witten is no longer a threat now that at the age of 33 he's reached his NFL dotage.
"Oh yeah, big time," Bowles said. "He’s been like that his whole career. He’s steady, always tough. You know he’s going to get the ball. He’s going to make his catches, he doesn’t turn the ball over, he can block, so he’s a guy we have to look out for."
Witten, who's played in every Dallas game since '04 and started all but two, is at 65 receptions for 594 yards and two touchdowns this season. The catches are a little more than he'd had the previous two seasons but his 9.1 yards/catch are the lowest of his career.
He's played in all three games vs. the Jets since his 2003 rookie season, but he made his presence felt in the last two. On Thanksgiving 2007 at Texas Stadium, he had four catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, and he did his best to spoil the Jets' 2011 home opener with six catches for 110 yards.

Chris Ivory Poised For Monster Game Versus Dallas

Chris Ivory Poised For Monster Game Versus Dallas

When the 8-5 New York Jets travel to Arlington, Texas for a Week 15 clash with the 4-9 Dallas Cowboys, Todd Bowles’ squad will enjoy the luxury of having a number of factors in his favor suggesting that Jason Garrett & Co. are in for a very long evening. That’s because, statistically, this is a nightmare matchup for the Boys on both sides of the football.

Jets Offense vs. Cowboys Defense Breakdown

On offense, there’s no secret as to what type of gameplan the Jets will try and implement in order to extend their win streak to a season-best four games. Much like they’ve done all year, they like to utilize the running game to setup play-action passes, as well as big-play opportunities downfield.

Destined to have a mammoth game Saturday night is Jets running back Chris Ivory, whose violent style should prove effective against a Cowboys’ defense that allows 114 rushing yards per contest. The 27-year-old from Longview, Texas seems to be peaking at the right time after overcoming a mid-season slump.

Ivory comes into Week 15 fresh off his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, racking up 101 yards in a 30-8 win last week against Tennessee. Another indicator that this matchup favors the Jets offense in a major way is the fact that they are 10th in the league in points scored (25.0 ppg), while Dallas’ “D” surrenders about 24 points a week, which ranks 16th in the league.

Finally, there’s one area that actually favors Dallas over New York in this one, and that is in the passing game. Statistically, the Jets’ passing attack ranks 12th in the NFL with 253.5 yards per game, while the Cowboys’ pass defense is fourth in the league allowing 221.1 yards per week. Having that said, going up against wide receivers like Brandon Marshall, who’s well on his way to his sixth Pro Bowl, and Eric Decker, who’s always a threat around the goal line, could prove to be a daunting task.

Marshall is among the best in the league in every category, coming into Week 15 with 89 receptions for 1187 yards and 11 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Decker has also been able to be a major force in this offense. Despite dealing with a number of injuries, the former Bronco has tallied 66 receptions for 875 yards and nine scores.

Cowboys Offense vs. Jets Defense Breakdown

With Tony Romo on the shelf, the matchup between Dallas’ offense and New York’s defense is the most lopsided aspect of this interconference affair, and should be the determining factor in the final outcome. Defensively, the Jets are among the best resistances in the NFL, while the Cowboys’ attack is outright atrocious with out No. 8 under center.

How unevenly matched are these units? How about the fact that Dallas’ only bright spot is its running game, which is good enough for 11th place in the league with 118 yards per game. Against any other defense, those numbers would be rather impressive. However, against the Jets’ defense, which is the very best in the NFL surrendering a stingy 79 yards per game, it doesn’t mean a whole lot.

Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, it’s downhill from there, as the remaining three areas of the game play right into the Jets’ defense in a major way. Offensively Dallas ranks 28th in total yards (325.6), 29th in passing yards (207.5) and 30th in points scored (17.7). In contrast, New York’s defense allows 323.8 yards total (NFL Rank: 5th), 19.7 points per game (NFL Rank: 10th) and 244.9 passing yards per game (NFL Rank: 19th).

Scout's Eye: Favorable Matchup For Cowboys' DTs, Challenging Cromartie

Scout's Eye: Favorable Matchup For Cowboys' DTs, Challenging Cromartie

IRVING, Texas – A look at the two matchup that I think will play a big part in whether the Cowboys can grab a win against the Jets this Saturday night at AT&T Stadium.

The really obvious talking point is the strength of this New York defense against the Cowboys’ woeful offense. But there are other aspects of this matchup we have to consider. Rod Marinelli and his defensive staff are going to get some favorable looks on their side of the ball, and they’re going to need to take advantage.

On the other side, it’s pretty straightforward. The Cowboys have not been executing this season on offense, and they’re going to need to if Saturday is to go well.

Let’s take a look:

Cowboys DT Tyrone Crawford against Jets OG Brian Winters

If there is a matchup that the Cowboys can win along their defensive front, it is Tyrone Crawford against Brian Winters. Winters is clearly the weak link of a line that has some nice pieces to it. Winters doesn’t play with much initial quickness or foot speed. He tends to get over extended and knocked out of position easily. He is a poor athlete and the majority of his snaps are him grabbing and trying to hold.

I don’t see much lateral range or the ability to adjust. His lower body flex is poor and he really struggles when he has to deal with a rusher that plays with quickness. He doesn’t adjust well in space and his body control is really not where it needs to be. He also struggles with power. I don’t see a player with much upper or lower body strength and it shows in the way he plays.

Winters has a hard time finishing his blocks. He is a mauler-brawler type of player. There is nothing fluid or pretty to his game. Regardless of who lines up in front of him – whether it’s Crawford or someone else -- he needs to keep the pressure on him the entire game. The coaches need to work to get him in as many one-on-one situations as possible and attack that spot, because he will struggle to hold up.

Ryan Fitzpatrick does show some mobility in the pocket when pressed, but the majority of the time he will stand right there in the middle of the pocket to deliver the ball. Getting to him quickly will be necessary to having to deal with these Jets receivers.

Cowboys WR Terrance Williams against Jets CB Antonio Cromartie

This New York secondary benefits greatly from its pass rush, but on the flip side – the front benefits from the secondary’s ability to cover on the back end. Todd Bowles is able to roll out three quality cornerbacks in Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine, which all present their challenges.

These cornerbacks don’t normally travel with receivers, they just set up on the left and right sides. If the Cowboys are going to have any success throwing the ball in this game, it will likely have to be with Terrance Williams leading the way. Teams tend to stay away from going at Revis -- and as we all know, that’s for good reason. So that means Cromartie sees his share of balls.

Bowles had Cromartie in Arizona and one of the first moves he made when taking over as the head coach was to bring Cromartie with him for his scheme. Like Revis, Cromartie is able to play either up or off with equal ability. When up tight he can be physical and difficult to get away from. He has a long, rangy build with body control and quickness to stay in the route. When he is in off coverage, it is almost like he is baiting the quarterback into a throw. He will turn his rear to the sideline, shuffle sideways, then drive on the pass.

Williams will have to work hard to finish his routes. If he is short or sloppy – Cromartie will eat him up. Matt Cassel has to also be careful that he is not late on his throws. Cromartie is not one of those corners that will miss a mistake if one is made.
