JetsWire: Another potential target for the Jets challenging offensive coordinator position just become available.

The Texans and offensive coordinator George Godsey have mutually agreed to part ways, the team announced on Monday.

“I’m grateful for the tireless work ethic and contributions George has made to our team over the last three years,” Bill O’Brien said in a statement released by the Texans. “I wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

The Jets have been struggling to replace the recently-retired Chan Gailey as Todd Bowles has already struck out two times with potential hires. Godsey could be an intriguing name because of his background as a quarterback coach and his apparent history with Christian Hackenberg.

Godsey and O’Brien have known each other since Godsey’s time as Georgia Tech’s starting quarterback in the early 2000s. O’Brien was the team’s offensive coordinator.

After Godsey spent several years at Central Flordia coaching both quarterbacks and running backs, O’Brien brought him to New England to serve on Bill Belichick’s staff as an offensive assistant. Godsey would remain in that position until 2013 even after O’Brien bolted for Penn State but the two remained in close contact.

According to MMQB’s Albert Breer, it was Godsey that pushed O’Brien to recruit Hackenberg to come to Penn State in 2012. O’Brien and Hackenberg turned out to be a terrific marriage as the Jets second-round pick enjoyed a tremendous freshman season under O’Brien. After Hackenberg’s freshman year, O’Brien left to be the head coach of the Texans and the young quarterback hasn’t been the same since.

Godsey would serve as the QB coach and later offensive coordinator for the Texans under O’Brien the last three seasons. He was stripped of his play-calling duties in Week 4 of this season because of the team’s struggles.

The Texans had one of the worst offenses in the league this year, largely due to the horrific play by Brock Osweiler. Houston finished the regular season with the fewest touchdowns (25) by a playoff team in the modern era.

Now that he’s available, Godsey is one of the most qualified and intriguing names out there. The Jets need someone that has a history of working with quarterbacks to help develop their young signal callers.

Godsey may be the right man for the job.

What do you guys think, is he an option we should pursue for OC? In defense of Godsey for this year the Texans Offense was awful even after O'Brien took over the play calling in week 4.... So he is definitely the fall guy here...

I would pin more of the offensive woes from this season on the horrific contract given to Osweiler than on the job Godsey did. Difference is, you can walk away from Godsey cheap, whereas Osweiler would cost you a mint.

Those two paragraphs seem to contradict each other. If he's so great developing signal callers, how did the Houston offense in general, and Osweiler in particular, have such bad production? And if he's so good, why Are they letting him go?
More than meets they eye here, and the eye alone says "pass".

Fair point, but I'd argue he is good at developing the type of QB who can fit his schemes. In Hackenburg, he saw a kid who could thrive in a pro-style offense, the kind O'Brien brought to Penn State.

So why did they throw money at Osweiler? I have zero clue. It's obvious he was not Godsey's type of QB.

reports are o'brien didn't want osweiler but management signed him anyway. o'brien really was the one running the offense. so for o'brien, after being stuck with a QB he didn't want, he could either toss aside the OC as a sacrificial lamb, or fire himself.

what would you do?

This seems to be what happened based on the Texans season... If you watched any game you can tell O'Brien had a disdain for Brock from day 1... His body language literally said I don't want this guy and he's never gonna get it.
