Getting bye with Mike Westhoff

That was a very good listen, especially about what's wrong with our special teams.

Westhoff always breaks things down to the core in a very frank way, which I love. Thanks for posting that link!

if he was still coaching the jets that would make us a very complete team with our offense & defense

Yeah.

I know Bobby April has been around for awhile. So far I'm not impressed, to say the least.

I think I see some pretty good young talent, who should be able to play specials. Bobby better get these guy's together quickly.

I miss "The Cane"

westy breaks down football very much the way hubie brown does with hoops..

in-depth meat & potatoes insight..

i'm a big fan of both & always feel more educated as a result of listening to them speaking on the sports they coached so well..

That was really was a great listen. Thank you so much for posting this Wangbone!

Some comments on what Mike had to say....

A lot of the reason why there has been such a lack of talent at the bottom of the roster in recent years is a combination of reasons:

1) As Mike Westhoff said, and I agree, ST is actively being ruled out of the game. So the team isn't going to devote much effort in to keeping guys on the roster for 5 plays a game.

2) Years earlier, when the Jets got their hands on a decent ST/return guy, they were always ho hum about keeping them. Why they never focused more keeping those talented ST guys? I will never know. It didn't make any sense to me.

3) As has been stated by the big bad Rex Ryan, Most of the FO people were actively trying to get rid of Rex Ryan and their way of doing that was to deplete the roster of any sort of talent. Especially with John Idzik, Rex was not his choice, therefore he wanted to hang Rex out to dry. I must say, I find that to be disgusting. He's going to deplete the roster so he can get rid of the coach, and meanwhile the fans that spend their hard earned money buying tickets for these games want to see a decent product on the field? What happened to the fans in all of this?

4) Poor drafting - No matter who the GM has been whether it be Tanny or Idzik, they were very bad at drafting. As much as I liked what Tanny was doing drafting in his early years, he stunk from pretty much 2009 on. Idzik was terrible from top to bottom. He thought he was playing with house money. He thought he'd still have a job after successfully screwing Rex Ryan and sending him packing. He thought wrong.

And really a lot of these reasons that I mention, you could find valid for the entire team. The Jets had bad management with an agenda. They didn't seem to care about the fans.

I'm happy with what they have now, I just hope those ugly days never come back. For a very short timeframe this organization was on its way to very special things and I hope the Jets can regain those times.

As a side note, WHY Mike Westhoff was never taken seriously as a Head Coach candidate, I will never know? This guy just gets it. He was a genius when it came to special teams, so isn't proving he was deserving of an opportunity to coach this team?

Agreed. I always though he would have been a great HC. I recall him being very upset when he was passed over with the Jets during one of the coaching chances. Not sure if it was with mangini or rex

I think it was both actually. He just never seemed to be a serious candidate. And when Bowles was hired? He was passed over as a candidate altogether. Really weird. I never understood that.

I think his health played a factor in it. Plus the fact that he is a royal pain to a HC. That's why he was stupidly fired in Miami.

Interesting take on Idzik. It kind of matches up with Rex's story

LOLz i got into a light dust up with a poster here based on suggesting the same thing!!

i still believe woody should have asked westy to interview out of respect alone for how well he coached here..

100% agreed. I really think it is a slap in the face to Westhoff that he wasn't asked to interview.

He was fired in Miami??? I thought he was just signed away by the Jets? Bill Parcells got him to come to NY, right?
