Everyone stated when the hire was made that we be switching to a 4-3 and had some comparable options to make that happen... Then it was stated by the team that G. Williams will keep the team in a 3-4 base style defense... But with the free agent moves and draft selections it seems more of a mess than any particular direction...
  • 3 starting Middle Linebackers
  • 2 Legit Outside Linebackers
  • 5 starting caliber defensive linemen
We all agree the starting middle linebackers are CJ Mosley & Avery Williamson leaving Darron Lee as the role player?

We all should agree that this year's draft selection Jachai Polite should be a day one starter across from Jordan Jenkins on the outside...

We all should agree Quinnen, Leo are definite starters but who is the third, Henry Anderson or Nathan Sheperd? Quinnen is a nose tackle, so Steve Mclendon is now the backup? Foley is a solid developmental option at either the end or tackle position... Then adding depth talent with priority free agents; FSU Fred Jones, Tennessee Kyle Phillips, Troy Trevon Sanders, IW Justin Alexandre just makes you wonder all these extra bodies for a position for a 3-4 is four too many after we already have 6 bodies on the roster and 5 of them are starting caliber...

Now of course it is good to have depth but the questions will start to get louder on what type of base defense our team will run with all these xtra bodies at each pivotal positions...

What do you think?

Gregg Williams shows different looks, from what I’ve read. He doesn’t stick to one primary formation. In order to accomplish what he wants, I’ve gotta imagine you need at least 10 rotational players.

I’m excited to see this defense. I think our front seven is going to be scary good.

Better question who makes the active 53?

We know this:

DL
  • Leonard Williams
  • Quinnen Williams
  • Nathan Sheperd
  • Henry Anderson
  • Steve Mclendon
are or should be the locks to make it

MLB
  • C.J. Mosley
  • Avery Williamson
  • Darron Lee
  • Neville Hewitt
3 starters and 1 special teams guy that shows he can fill in for a starter

OLB
  • Jordan Jenkins
  • Jachai Polite
  • Frankie Luvu
  • Brandon Copeland
these 4 look to be the front runners but we did draft one and signed a few priority free agents, so it is now anyone's guess on who outside Jordan Jenkins and Jachai Polite make the roster...

CB
  • Trumaine Johnson
  • Parry Nickerson
  • Brian Poole
  • Derrick Jones
  • Rashard Robinson
  • Darryl Roberts
These six seem to be as of now the lock to make the roster, injuries aside not a bad group especially with how Gregg Williams and his hybrid Tampa 2 coverage will help improve their skill sets to be a positive rather than a negative in past years...

SAF
  • Jamal Adams
  • Marcus Maye
  • Brandon Bryant
  • Doug Middleton
  • Rontez Miles
Five safeties seems like a lot but Miles is our special teams ace opening the door for us to carry five...

Right now this count should have 24 of a possible at most 26 defensive players making the active 53...

With this lineup a 3-4 base along with a Tampa 2 coverage but this would be hard pressed running a base 3-4 as Tampa 2 is run out of a 4-3 base... Maybe a Nickel Base that can convert into a 3-4 then utilizing some Cover 3 packages will be what we will be executing so yes will be interesting...

What do you think?

The last time the system question came up, that I saw at a Williams interview, he said he would be using both or some combination of both based each week on the team we would be facing. Exactly what that really means or how he intends to work it I have no idea, but I do know he can be pretty creative with his defenses. That being said, he is probably the only one that knows who fits his system and will make the cut. I wouldn't even venture a guess.
