Hackenberg waived by Raiders

I feel for the kid, but got to say, I'm not surprised. His time with the Jets pretty much says it all. I know some will blame the coaching staff but when they won't put a guy in the game that has physical talent there has to be a reason. He's very likeable and I hope that he can overcome the deficiencies that have put him in this predicament and finally realize his dream. It would have been nice to have that pick though.

Was never a fan of the pick and had hope he would show something, anything. My feeling is he was here because Mac didn't want to be embarrassed by cutting him. If you listen to Todd about Sam, there is a marked difference in his appraisal of Sam vs. Hack and Petty for that matter. Today he said they were pleased with his progress.... when did you ever hear him say that for either guy. Dam shame we lost another 2nd rounder

Can't believe the Jets would burn such a high draft pick on someone with such a lack of talent. Even Gholston was able to play some downs.

I actually liked the pick when we made it. I liked taking a risk on a QB who showed franchise QB-like ability one year at Penn State. The Jets needed a QB, and he had some potential.

But obviously it turned out to be a terrible pick. After seeing the Raiders cut him so quickly, it doesn’t appear as though this guy has NFL ability.

The only good thing you can say about the pick is that no small animals were harmed. (Punching a wall out of frustration doesn't count.)

Agree completely, really thought it was worth the risk at the time.

You know what, if he makes the Patriots roster, I'd bet they'll turn him into a solid player. He has the tools, he just needs to figure it out mechanically.

He needs to figure it out mentally. But your right, behind Brady with Belichick and McDaniels, he could thrive. It's the system he had success with in his first year at Penn State.

This is the problem with the media coverage the Patriots get. When Hack is a Jet, he is bashed as a player. The second the Patriots show interest, not only is he a much better player, but the presumption is that it is going to work out. How often have the Patriots brought in someone like this and had it be a disaster?

Need a hint? Look at where Tebow went after being a Jet.

I haven't seen anything in the media regarding Hack to the Patriots. My response was personal opinion. Given his success running that system, getting to learn from Brady and Belichick, if he has any chance of success in this league. NE is the place.
????? Much more so than he would have had with the "QB whisper Gruden"......
Tebow was never a QB, complete opposite from hack, Hack has the physical tools, Tebow had the mental tools, and NE has unfortunately had much more success than failures with lesser talented players .

From PFT:

"But Patriots coach Bill Belichick apparently sees enough in Hackenberg that he’d like to take a look. With Tom Brady about to turn 41, the Patriots wouldn’t mind having a young quarterback they could develop. This year’s seventh-round pick, Danny Etling, may be that young quarterback, but perhaps Hackenberg will get an opportunity to compete in training camp as well.

And every Jets fan has to be just a little bit fearful that Hackenberg will become the heir apparent to Tom Brady, and will torment the Jets for years to come."

Where does that bash hack as a jet and in any way suggest he is a much better player suddenly, or will work out in NE.
The line " perhaps Hackenberg will get an opportunity to compete in training camp as well " pretty much sums it up.
The last comment could be said of every player we cut. I have read SOJ crap on every Jets forum for years. The " Watch him sign with NE and become an pro bowler."
I'm sure it will be posted within minutes if Hack does sign in NE. I'm sure you read how The QB wisperer Gruden was going to turn him into a great QB when he signed with the Raiders , even though Gruden has never developed a QB.

I don't believe, my opinion of course, that Hackenberg will ever make it as starting QB on any roster in the NFL. I've said it before numerous times and Tony mentioned it above. He does not have the mental capacity to be an NFL QB. I've heard this from sources in the past that I felt, at the time, were reliable. He was, admittedly, getting help with his mechanics but that wasn't his real issue. I am not worried that he will terrorize the Jets ever as a Patriot QB. He might switch to another position and find success in the NFL but it won't happen as a QB.

Yea, as a backup qb and holder.

I can't remember how many people here thought Sanchez would come back and terrorize the Jets after his release. Hackenburg was a desperate pick at a desperate time. History shows that the Jets don't have a good track record of actually developing QB's, so the Hack pick had almost no chance of success.

Nice to see that Darnold already appears more developed than Hack, Smith or Simms ever was.....I also believe less is more when dealing with Darnold from a coaching POV.

Not even as a back-up or clipboard holder. If he doesn't change position he will never play in the NFL. I could, maybe, visualize him as a receiver.
