I just asked this in a different thread, but should have asked it here. Is it true that Gailey's system is more suited to Petty's skill set? If so, do you still think Hack would be higher on the depth chart?

Be sure to bump this after week 3 of the preseason. Pace gone already? Think you may be right

I just saw it in the other thread and responded there. :)

But I'll paste the response here as well, since you asked it here too:

I don't know how true that is, Petty never took a single snap under center at Baylor. Not all spread offenses are the same. Gailey runs a pro offense with elements of the college spread. Also Hackenberg is far more advanced at reading coverages and making adjustments at the LOS, Petty was in more of a one read system, a spread offense and find the open man. Pretty basic stuff, not like the advanced calculus degree a QB needs in the NFL. But all that said, Petty has a one year head start in our system, so that probably evens it out and makes for an interesting competition.

This is going to make training camp and the preseason games a must watch for me.

Oh and one interesting note, just something I noticed, after last years draft Mac and Bowles both made it clear that Petty is not ready and will need at least a year on the bench. When asked the same question about Hack, neither would say he cannot play this year, they both took more of a wait and see attitude.

For as much as I love the sport, I really wish I understood it the way you (and others) do. Thanks for sharing the insight and putting up with the amateur questions!

Not an amateur question at all, OCCH, it was actually a really good question. As for football knowledge, I think yours is as good as mine or anyone else's. You always struck me as a thoughtful poster who understands the game.

I hope we get something out of Amaro and Smith. Those guys are two high draft picks.

Agreed. I was excited about Amaro. I still think he can be a matchup nightmare against slower lbs

I guess I disguise my cluelessness well!

I've been a fan since 82 but never played the sport outside of getting some guys together in the street. TBH I've probably gained most of my knowledge from JI! And the CFB insight? FORGET IT -- I'd be lost without you guys!!

Just want to make sure the knowledgeable posters realize how appreciated they are . . .

In your opinion, what does that look like in December (barring injury of course)? In other words, any rookies you see breaking into the starting line-up, or not until 2017?

GMF,

Good call on Jalin Marshall, I just added him and removed Dozier because Shell can play OG if you need him too.

Gailey will tailor his system to the talent he has.... So Hackenberg will be fine under Gailey. With that said Gaily does run more of a spread offense with getting the ball out to WR1. Something Petty is definitely accustomed too compared to Halenberg.... So he has an advatage there. Where as Hackeneberg has the advantage of being able to read a defense pre-snap and taking the ball from under center.

barring injury the only real potential to crack the starting lineup would be Jordan Jenkins like Lorenzo Mauldin last year could become a two down starter...

other than that, there really isn't a need for anyone to take that next step early unless there is an injury or they take it...

come 2017 tho the starters could be dramatically different then this year...

Shell won't play this year he will be on the active list but be inactive every week unless there is an injury tho he may see some situational rotations in the middle to late part of the season...

Dozier will also make the roster because he can play center, if Mangold goes down again Wesley Johnson will start for him but they would need a number 2...

Jarvis Harrison could end up being on the practice squad this year, depending if he can not improve this training camp/off season...

I do like your roster but there are many what ifs...

They paid Freddie Bishop to make the final cut not to ride the practice squad... His contract is for more than one year with team friendly additions...

The signing of Daryl Morris puts onus to Short to make the roster...

with Jalin Marshall here Dri Archer among a few others are put on notice... Throughout the entire draft all three days the Jets front office were in contact with Jalin Marshall to see if any teams were interested... Has to be something there that they want him to be that guy or just another smokescreen who knows...

Shell won't play this year ...
As Lee Corso would say, NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND!!!

Shell was a four year starter in the SEC, what I like to call the semi pro conference, started every game since his freshman year in the SEC (nearly 50 Games), faced blue chip NFL DE's and OLB's out the wazoo, so this kid is coming into the league a lot more pro ready than your average middle round pick. He might not play this year, but don't discount the possibility.

Dozier will also make the roster because he can play center ...
If they keep Dozier to backup at Center, then they cut Wesley Johnson, but I think they keep Johnson who is more of a pure Center and cut Dozier who is an Idzik pick, so there's no emotional connection to this player. Also it should be noted that when Mangold got hurt last year and his status for the following week was uncertain, they called up Wes Johnson from the PS and said he, not Dozier, would start at Center if Mangold couldn't go. As it turned out Mangold did suit up and play, but the team was prepared to start Johnson if he couldn't go. Thats why I settled on Johnson over Dozier.

Jarvis Harrison could end up being on the practice squad this year
Harrison was one of Gil Brandt's super sleepers last year, he thought Harrison would start as a rookie, and Brandt knows the player well because he's a Texas kid, played at A&M, and Brandt is a Texan. He has a close relationship with the Texas programs. Harrison didn't start as a rookie, but if Brandt was right about the kid there is no reason why he shouldn't challenge for the starting spot in year two. Its not like he has Larry Allen to beat out.

Even so, translation to the NFL isn't as easy for some and being a four year starter doesn't mean nothing at this level regardless of the division they were in... The Jets have their starting five, meaning if he sees the field would be as a role player but look at how deep this roster is on the offensive line... That being said being a draft selection doesn't mean he would automatically make the roster but because he has that potential grooming him one season as a part of the active roster keeping him inactive would bode well for his future success...

As for this very reason, Jarvis Harrison at the end of last season was noted not to be anywhere ready to take the next step or put in words that were said is he hasn't progressed the way we hoped to this point in time... That being said they will need role players and even tho Dozier is from last regime, this regime likes his versatility making it hard to believe they would part ways with him... Now anything is possible but just don't see it...

Harrison was a sleeper last year but he hasn't developed so far making him a practice roster candidate unless this off season - training camp he can finally put it all together again it is a what if scenario...

I totally forgot about the CFL edge rusher, Freddie Bishop.

Thanks for the reminder ... fixed it.
