I haven’t posted for a while, so here are a couple of thoughts:
1. I was wrong about Sam. Although I made excuses for him ,he had to go. He simply did not see the field well at all. What convinced me was that I saw a an all-22 coach’s tape when there was talk about Sam possibly being traded to the 49ers. In it, two Pro Football Focus type guys from SF showed how frequently Sam forced the ball to covered receivers on plays where there were other receivers who were wide open. They also pointed out how rarely there were yards after the catch even on completions, because Sam had not hit the receiver in stride. They went over 4-5 games and concluded that “We (SF) don’t want him here.” They were literally laughing at him. Yes, the coaching was historically bad, as was the team around him, but Sam also was responsible for many of his problems. He’s a great kid, and I hope that good coaching will enable him to still have a good career.
2. We have a great GM and a great coach. I am the most confident I have been since Parcells was here. Joe D killed it in this draft. There was a tendency for many Jets fans to complain about all of the DBs that we took, but I have seen from many different evaluators that most of them are terrific picks. As for Salah, I loved his phone call with Wilson. He said that the team would pick him up; he didn’t have to lift up the team. Free agents wanted to play for him, too.
3. Mel Kiper is an idiot. He stated that the Jets should keep Sam because Kiper gave him a higher
grade than he gave Wilson. It never occurred to Kiper that a team should base its decisions on how a player actually performs in the NFL, not on the grade given by Kiper 3 years ago!
4. Wilson has some brashness, and I like that in a QB. it’s a marked contrast to Sam, who’s is laid back to the extreme. I just hope that we have some patience with Wilson.
