How does Eric Decker keep getting a pass?

Eric Decker did a Jace Amaro this year and became a locker room nuisance... Not only did he go on IR for a shoulder he underwent hip surgery... The team was not aware on how serious his hip was otherwise they wouldn't of acted like they were blindsided by it... Expecting him to have shoulder surgery and possibly being the short term IR player with the possibility of returning... They tried to cover up their surprise but some read it as another betrayal by another player in back to back years...

Jace Amaro did this last year when he got hurt in the first preseason game and didn't wait until after the first game of the season to have surgery... He too could of returned near the end of the season which by then we were limping near the end...

Now after both surgeries he was a big part of the distraction in the locker room this year, very vocal on behalf of Fitzpatrick which couldn't help the coaching staff get a hold of the outspoken nature of some athletes like Brandon Marshall, etc...

Everyone likes him, believes he can be that go to guy but Chan Gailey is gone and he won't be able to be that slot guy we had the last two seasons... His production like Marshall's took a dip, yeah he only played in three games but a (-20%) catch radius off targets is a still a dip... (21 targets, 9 catches in 3 games) <-- this is the statistics of a possession receiver...

Eric Decker has $3 M in dead loss that can be split between the final two years of his contract, saving the team $7.25 M (2017) & $7.5 M (2018) so why wouldn't we make this cap cut?

His quarterback or friend won't be back, his running buddy is unlikely to be back and he is coming off of not one but two surgeries...

He was a good signing when we signed him, but he was one of the duo this past off season that kind of boycotted to get their guy his money...

Decker is 100X better of a player than Jace Amaro.

No way we part ways with him. We better not.

The problem with Decker, and any older player now on the roster, is that it will take several years to build a team here that can be competitive, if at all. I keep reading posts here that laud the young receivers that the Jets have. Wouldn't it make more sense to develop them for the future rather than carry one more aging player coming off injuries?

has nothing on level of talent...

has to do with respect for the organization and the locker room...

being placed on IR where the team expects him to have shoulder surgery yet he turns around and has hip surgery first, even tho he needed it the team was not aware of how serious his hip was before he was placed on IR for the shoulder...

during this season the locker room nuisance during the Fitzpatrick benching... loyalty is one thing but distraction and causing a fracture in the locker room is inexcusable...

now that Fitz is a free agent what is Decker going to do hold out until we re-sign Fitz? he made his intentions clear last season on who he thinks should be our QB, that won't change heading into this off season... we are unlikely be able to trade him because his recovery won't be anywhere complete until way into training camp maybe even preseason...

if we are overhauling our roster of the aged veterans then he is one to be considered gone, at the same time the team will save big cap $ dollars both this year and next... Now I doubt he is a team player that would take a pay cut to stick around...

I think his absence was a bigger blow to our offense then most want to admit.

The young guys have a lot of upside (and Devon Smith didn't play at all this season), but with all of that upside none of them (not even the collective group of them) were able to settle that offense and provide that threat that kept defenses honest and off of Brandon Marshall.

Decker will be 30 next year and hopefully he is willing to restructure to help the team build. But as of right now, I still think we need him to have a semblance of an offense, and it keeps the pressure off of the young guys and allows them to play their games.

Just my $.02

Sorry guys, I don't see this. Decker making a public statement in support of Fitzpatrick was fine with me. Many players pledged their support for Fitz and Geno, too, when he was named the starter. I don't think this fractures locker rooms. And for all we know, Decker had no idea how serious his hip was when it was diagnosed. We can speculate all day long about this.

Getting rid of good players who are good character guys isn't smart football business, in my mind. He'll be 30, he's still very productive, and he's only making about 7 million per year. He's worth keeping for at least a few more years.

he is on the books for $9 M this year and $9 M the year after...

as for his locker room statements this year are noted by Cimini and himself via twitter about Fitz being benched not once but twice...

as for his injury he decided to have hip surgery when the team was announcing at the same time he was to have shoulder surgery... so sure everyone was on the same page...

but if his hip was that bad then he should of been place on IR sooner so he would of never hurt his shoulder...

I thought they didn't find the hip injury until he went to Dr for shoulder, didn't seem like some evil deed like he intentionally played wroth a bad hip to get the Jets.
I'd keep him, he's still important part to our offense. We saw how one dimensional we are without him and Marshall. If a kid steals his spot in the lineup, why not trade him next year?

Disagree with the premise of this thread, Decker is one hell of a receiver and a major reason why Fitz had a career year in 2015.

No offense this might be the worst post ever put on this forum... Decker is nothing but productive when he plays.... and never has he been linked to being a locker room distraction... You can't fault him or Marshall for sticking up for Fitz in the offseason after the year they all had in 2015.... This post is as bad as anything Manish has reported

Don't remember Decker being a distraction???? Think a lot of the decision will be based on Robbie Anderson and how the CS feels about him. If they feel good about him, then keep Decker as the number 2 and Enunwa as a slot (or vice versa) with RA as number one. If they dont like RA as number 1, retain Marshall as number 1, RA as #2 with Enunwa in the slot Dont think they will keep both Marshall and Decker.....

NO Decker wasn't any kind of dostraction this season... He played 3 games and if you are talking about the process it took to finally decide to shut him down for the season or not, that happens with players all the time throught the NFL. That is far from a distraction.... RA is definitely not a #1... He is a good #2. You play Enunwa on the Outside with RA and you let Decker work the slot. And I agree they won't keep both Decker and Marshall in my opinion you let Mrshall go based on age, and 2 facts he has more tendencies to drop the ball than Decker , along with he's never played the slot in his career. Whereas Decker feasts in the slot.

Eric Decker is by far the best route runner on the team. And one of the best in the NFL. It's what makes him successful. He's got at least 3 good years left. I don't see why we would consider cutting him.

If Peake or Anderson were proven players, I'd give it a tiny bit of consideration. But neither player has proven anything yet to me. I don't view either one of these guys as anything more than a #4 at this point.

Agree, it would be stupid to dump him. Marshall takes a pay cut, since he announced he would and wants to retire here. Marshall and Anderson on the outside, Decker in the slot, enunwa at h back, Powell at rb. I think Jenkins might cone along nicely for us and at a good price.
Then let peake grow as a backup. Takes the pressure off of rebuilding the o. With this model you would just consider drafting awr in the first round, or maybe Victor Cruz. Or draft qb and o line.

On defense, I'd sign jpp since he wants a multi year, give him 3 but only guarantee 1, dump Revis, trade Sheldon, draft cb.

With 7 picks I'd go
1- rb/wr
2- cb
3- o line
4- o line
5- safety
6- d line
7- lb

He keeps getting a pass because he can catch them when thrown to him.
And you can't say that for some of his teammates.

Not only that, but they could probably both learn a great deal from Decker.
